Hi Yinka
I did my masters project in artficial recharge. I used PMWIN 5 to simulate the
groundwater recharge. My study area is bound by a river in the east but there is
no defined boundary condition on other sides. Because the direction of flow is
toward the river I used constant boundary condition on the west. To avoid it's
impact on the concern area I telescoped the cells far from main area up to 500
meter. I did water balance simualition between the constant head cells and the
main area to make sure that they did not interact each other.

So you can decied your boundary condition based on your direction of flow. In
other way you have to have one constant head boundary condition in order your
excess flow to be spilled out.
I hope this will help you a bit.

yours
Yosief

I am using MODFLOW 2000 to model a three layer, 170 rows x 220 cols.
The west and east boundaries are bounded by impermeable strata.
Hence, I intend to apply no flow boundaries. However, there is no
physical or impermeable boundary at both the north and south
boundaries. Coupled with this, there are very few monitoring borehole
data within this study area and all these well records are completed
within the first top layer. Please, can someone suggest ways to handle
these north and south boundaries for the three layers? What other
data do I need to obtain?

Thanks.

Yinka.

National Workshop:
Management of Aquifer Recharge
A valuable freshwater storage can be created by using Aquifer Storage and
Recovery (ASR) to store excess water in times of abundance, for use in
times of scarcity.
It’s not pie in the sky. It’s proven. It’s economic in many parts of
Australia, and there is growing evidence for the ecological sustainability
of ASR operations.

When
Wednesday 6 - Friday 8 October 2004

Where
ANA Hotel Gold Coast
22 View Ave, Surfers Paradise, Queensland

Expected outcomes
At the completion of the course participants will:
· be able to identify opportunities for ASR within attendees organisations
· know how to assess the viability of an ASR project
· understand the key issues in designing and implementing an ASR project
· know the public health and environmental requirements where ASR is practised
· be fully aware of best practise in ASR projects
· understand the impact of ASR projects for catchments and groundwater
management

In the future how can we protect the environment, use less water but produce
more food ? by switching to vegetarian diets? by increasing trade in virtual
water? by using more wastewater for agriculture? by reducing agricultural
subsidies in the west? or by extracting more value from each drop of water used
? Produced by the International Water Management Institute for discussion at

made if we hope to provide a reasonable diet for the worlds population in 2025.

Dear friend:

As oxigen affects chemical conditions ans reactions, QUAl2E can simulate the
influence of oxigen concentration. The oxigen concentration is considered as
part of the phenomena that occurs in rivers. Very low concentration of
oxigen that simulates anaerobic conditions can be simulated with QUAL2E

Hi Ramdani,

With respect to fuzzy logic applications in Hydrology, just check in the

related to the journal of hydrology and the journal "Hydrological Processes"
where he has published about such type of applications. I can not give you
more specific information at the moment. Some examples are as follows:

Dear all,

Is there anyone out there who happens to know about an ArcView 3.2 script
(extension) for implementing the Hutchinson's ANUDEM (on which TOPOGRID of
ARC/INFO is based) to produce a good quality DEM for hydrologic purposes?.
I would be very much interested in using it for finishing up with a paper (I
do not have access to an ARC/INFO license).

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Hi,
You might go to the US geological survey website there
are lot of compter models you can download for free.
The website is

Hello Ayman,

Waterloo Hydrogeologic, Inc. offers 5 educational tutorials on groundwater
modeling using Visual MODFLOW. Each tutorial includes step-by-step instruction
on how to build and run 3D groundwater flow and contaminant transport models,
and even includes various remediation scenarios. For more details I would
suggest visiting,

Dear Colleagues,

I have some questions regarding desalination plant brine disposal outfalls
into the marine environment.

What are design objectives (i.e. what ambient water quality criteria need to
be achieved at what distances or locations)?
What are the criteria in the presence of coral reefs?

Can anyone guide me to environmental guidelines and/or design guidelines?

Thank you

Dear Mr Sathyanathan

the way you describe your problem you should try the australian model
Watercress. This is very usefull in describing conjunctive use of various
water resources, such as runoff, groundwater, effluent, etc.

You can download it at: http://www.waterselect.com.au

Respected sirs,

As many of the scientist felt that the information given on "About Tanks"
was not sufficient, I would like to elaborate my query.

The study area is irrigated by three sources namely canal, tanks and wells.
The main canal is running to a length of 58 km and there are twelve branch
canals and 58 direct sluices taking off from the main canal. The total
number of tanks is around 1500. Besides the area is also irrigated by
wells. The large number of tanks formed in the command area get water
supplies from three sources, namely from their own catchments, from the
canals and from the operational wastes of the project i.e. losses in the
irrigation system. In this context I am interested to do simulation of
water balance including allocation of surface and ground water for
irrigation. At this juncture could you please suggest which hydrological
model would be very useful to accomplish the task. The comments are most
appreciable.

With thanks,
R. Sathyanathan.

Dear Sir,

Perhaps you should be a bit more explicit and describe better your
problem. Type of catchment and of the tanks?, purpose of the tanks, are
they working as normal reservoirs? etc. Only then we could give you a
piece of advice.

Cordially,

R. Vazquez
