Hydrologic software from the U.S. Geological Survey can be downloaded from
http://water.usgs.gov/software/
Many USGS publications can also be downloaded from http://www.usgs.gov/pubprod/
and selecting the "Publications Warehouse" link.

Best regards,
Andy

Dear all,

Is there anyone out there who happens to know about an ArcView 3.2 script
(extension) for implementing the Hutchinson's ANUDEM (on which TOPOGRID of
ARC/INFO is based) to produce a good quality DEM for hydrologic purposes?.
I would be very much interested in using it for finishing up with a paper (I
do not have access to an ARC/INFO license).

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Hello Ayman,

Waterloo Hydrogeologic, Inc. offers 5 educational tutorials on groundwater
modeling using Visual MODFLOW. Each tutorial includes step-by-step instruction
on how to build and run 3D groundwater flow and contaminant transport models,
and even includes various remediation scenarios. For more details I would

Dear Colleagues,

I have some questions regarding desalination plant brine disposal outfalls
into the marine environment.

What are design objectives (i.e. what ambient water quality criteria need to

What are the criteria in the presence of coral reefs?

Can anyone guide me to environmental guidelines and/or design guidelines?

Dear Mr Sathyanathan

the way you describe your problem you should try the australian model
Watercress. This is very usefull in describing conjunctive use of various
water resources, such as runoff, groundwater, effluent, etc.

You can download it at: http://www.waterselect.com.au

Respected sirs,

As many of the scientist felt that the information given on "About Tanks"
was not sufficient, I would like to elaborate my query.

The study area is irrigated by three sources namely canal, tanks and wells.
The main canal is running to a length of 58 km and there are twelve branch
canals and 58 direct sluices taking off from the main canal. The total
number of tanks is around 1500. Besides the area is also irrigated by
wells. The large number of tanks formed in the command area get water
supplies from three sources, namely from their own catchments, from the
canals and from the operational wastes of the project i.e. losses in the
irrigation system. In this context I am interested to do simulation of
water balance including allocation of surface and ground water for
irrigation. At this juncture could you please suggest which hydrological
model would be very useful to accomplish the task. The comments are most
appreciable.

With thanks,
R. Sathyanathan.

Dear Sir,

Perhaps you should be a bit more explicit and describe better your

they working as normal reservoirs? etc. Only then we could give you a
piece of advice.

comments are most appreciable.

With thanks,
R. Sathyanathan.

Though this is the water quality related queries, I hope you will help me out by
providing some suggestions and references.

I want to estimate the loading from the basin having different land uses. I have
5 yrs data of water quality (mg/l). The sampling has been undertaken once in a
month and the flow (m3/s) as well in the outlet of the subbasin. I want to
estimate the annual loading of different nutrient from the subbasins.
Unfortunately, I don't have the data of the water quality that has been measured
right after the storm event.

I would like to ask help regarding to convert the monthly concentrations of
nutrient to mean annual concentration and loading which can represent both the
storm event and base flow conditions.

Looking forward to your kind suggestions.

Sincerely yours,

Samay

Behzad,

I think that Prof. Ana Barros (Duke University) has worked (or is still
working) in the same direction as yours. You may contact her through
the following e-address:

ana.barros@...

You may also wish to contact Prof. Dirk Raes (one of the co-authors of
the FAO-56 report), who could give you an additional piece of advice,
through the following e-address:

dirk.raes@...

Furthermore, I advise you to get the following publications where you
may obtain detailed information about references suggested in earlier
messages by other colleagues, such as the ASCE 70 handbook, the FAO-56
report, the FAO-24 report, as well as other relevant and useful set of

Distributed Modeling of Belgian Catchments. (ASCE) Journal of
Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, 130(1): 1-8.

Vázquez R. F. and J. Feyen, 2003. Effect of potential
evapotranspiration estimates on effective parameters and performance of
the MIKE SHE-code applied to a medium-size catchment. Journal of
Hydrology, 270(4): 309-327.

Success with your investigation.

Behzad,
You might look into a couple of models.
EPIC and APEX models have provisions for estimating PET using any of
five methods including Hargreaves and Samani (1985), Penman (1948),
Priestley-Taylor (1972),Penman-Monteith (Monteith, 1965), or Baier-
Robertson (1965). Selection is often based on how much and what types
of data you have.
From the EPIC documentation:
"The Penman and Penman-Monteith methods require solar radiation, air
temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity as input. If wind
speed, relative humidity, and solar radiation data are not available,
the Hargreaves or Priestley-Taylor methods provide options that give
realistic results in most cases. The Baier-Robertson method
developed in Canada performs well in cold climates.

The model computes evaporation from soils and plants separately, as
described by Ritchie (1972). Potential soil water evaporation is
estimated as a function of potential evaporation and leaf area index
(LAI, area of plant leaves relative to the soil surface area).
Actual soil water evaporation is estimated by using exponential
functions of soil depth and water content. Plant water evaporation
is simulated as a linear function of potential evaporation and leaf
area index."
Here's a link:
http://www.brc.tamus.edu/epic/

The SWAT model incorporates three PET estimation methods: the Penman-
Monteith, Priestley-Taylor, and Hargreaves. Think the developers have
been doing quite of work with trees and forests recently, although
I'm not sure if the work was related to ET. Here's a link:
http://www.brc.tamus.edu/swat/swattheo.html

Good luck,
Steve

Dear Behzad

You can look at some of the PhD thesis at lib. of UOW.
You can also look at complementary approach developed
by Morton and some of the other research work
conducted by researchers at Dep. of civil engineering-
Melbourne and Monash Uni.

In addition the following thesis may be useful as
well.
Sharifi, F. (1996), Catchment Rainfall-Runoff Computer
Modelling,, PhD Thesis Dept. Civil & Mining
Engineering, University of Wollongong, Australia.

Hope these could help

Regards,
sharifi

Dear friend
my review says that you may refer ASCE Monograph No. 70 for thorough
understanding of Evapotranspiration. also you may consult FAO 56.
I was working towards developing a model for prdicting evapotranspiration
requirement of tea plantation which has elaborately developed canopy and aslo
the presence of shade trees for providing partial shade ( an ususal practice in
tea gardens). The normally used methods over predicted but I had to stop my work
in between due to some unavoidable reasons,.

Hope you will be able to do things right.

I am looking for (mathematical) models for evapotranspiration rate.
A literature review regarding evapotranspiration methods also is
useful.
In reality, I need to develop one model for evapotranspiration rate
of trees which should be related to soil suction and properties.
Would you please if you know any useful references let me know?
