Dear colleague,

I am also working a little bit in the nitrate pollution problems in
agricultural areas. I think that you have principally three options:

a) To investigate (by measurements, surveys, models etc.) the possible paths
of nitrate spreading from the suspect sources to the place of interest. Here
also the time pattern of pollution may be explanatory (e.g., the seasonal
variation) of nitrate concentrations in groundwater), as well as its
relation to water balance and groundwater table height.

b) To carry out a field experiment by adding additional sources of pollution
of a certain type of excluding them. Perhaps the real life has made several
such exeperiments for you (you may try to compare several different
locations in which the sources of nitrogen are different).

c) To use 15N as a tracer.

None of these option is simple and cheap, unfortunately.

With best regards,

Frantisek Dolezal

Dear Dr. Husamb,

There is a standard analytical method of nitrate determination in water sample
either it may be from agricultural activity, or wste water or landfill. And also
there are some techniques of nitrate determination using electrode dipping
instruments.

Dear Husamb
Hello
I am not pollution specialist but I think this can be
simply done by sampling from the pollution sources and
recognition of nitrogen ingridents compare to ones
find in groundwater.
Best Wishes

Hello Everyone

Here is the subject of my thesis that you saw on the subject bar (using gis on
dam planning).I have some ideas about the subject but i searched the whole
internet and did not encounter anything about on it.There are lots of usage on
hydrological area but not on dam planning.

Has anyone have any document or link on this topic ?

Thank you very much for your interests from now

I have never seen the Muskingum method used to "route" monthly discharge
data; I have only seen it used to route flood hydrographs.

You mention that you have an initial water storage of 500,000,000 m^3. Does
this mean you have a dam on the river? Where is this dam located relative
to 1) your stream gage where you got this flow data, and 2) the point
downstream where you want to predict the stream flows?

Subject: [hydrologymodel] how to predict downstream monthly discharge using
the upstream monthly discharge in an arid area

Dear all:
I want to know how to predict downstream monthly discharge using the
upstream monthly discharge in an arid area a)Muskingum method is used for
this problem,but
1) the time scale in this study is month, flood peak usually appears in Aug
in upstream and in Oct in downsteam 2)and evaporation are much larger than
rainfall and evaporation can not be neglected which can be neglected in less
time scale such as hour or day b)regression mothod is also used ,but the R^2
no more than 0.70 for more clear description,i paste the data below, anyone
would tell me how to deal with this problem?any response is appreciated.the
initial water storage is about 500,000,000m^3.
thank you

Dear all:
I want to know how to predict downstream monthly discharge using the
upstream monthly discharge in an arid area
a)Muskingum method is used for this problem, but
1) the time scale in this study is month, flood peak usually appears in Aug
in upstream and in Oct in downsteam
2)and evaporation are much larger than rainfall and evaporation can not be
neglected which can be neglected in less time scale such as hour or day
b)regression mothod is also used ,but the R^2 no more than 0.70
for more clear description,i paste the data below, anyone would tell me how
to deal with this problem?any response is appreciated.the initial water
storage is about 500,000,000m^3.
thank you
regards
Daqing Liu

Dear Friends,

It is my pleasure to inform you that Executive Council of Indian Association of
Hydrologists in its meeting held on April 13, 2005 decided to give 'Best paper
award' for the papers published in Hydrology Journal of IAH. This award carries
a cash amount of Rs. 10,000 (Rs. Ten thousand, to be distributed equally if
there are more than one authors in the paper) and a certificate. This would be a
good incentive for the authors. This award is open for the papers published in
28 th issue of the journal i.e. papers published in 2005. In the light of this
information, I request to the researchers/ professional hydrologists to
contribute technical papers for the Journal. Hydrology Journal publishes
scientific papers of National / international significance in the field of
hydrology and water resources.

Hydrology Journal
Indian Association of Hydrologists (http://www.nih.ernet.in/iah/) is publishing
"Hydrology Journal" on quarterly basis since 1980. It is devoted to the
publication of scientific papers of national and international significance in
the field of hydrology and water resources, including the following topics: (i)
Hydrologic design and modelling, (ii) catchment hydrology, (iii) environmental
hydrology, (iv) snow and ice hydrology, (v) field instrumentation, (vi)
groundwater (vii) unsaturated zone processes, (vii) erosion and sedimentation,
(viii) arid and semi-arid hydrology, (ix) hydrometeorology, (x) geophysical and
nuclear applications, (xi) remote sensing & GIS, (xii) hydrological extremes,
and (xiii) water availability and water balance.

Guidelines to Author for Preparation of Papers
The manuscript in triplicate or in 3.5" floppy disk (MS Word) should be
addressed to the Editor, HYDROLOGY Journal at the following address :

           Dr. N. K. Goel
           Editor, Hydrology Journal
           Indian Association of Hydrologists
           Department of Hydrology
Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee - 247 667 (India)

Manuscript
Should be typewritten on only one side of A4 size paper with wide margin on one
side. Generally, there is no page charge, but authors are advised to confine
their manuscripts to 15 typewritten pages (including abstract, references,
tables, and figures). The first page should contain a concise but informative
title (not exceeding 70 characters), an abstract not exceeding 200 words, and
five keywords (to be used for indexing purpose). Names of the author(s) along
with telephone, fax, e-mail numbers of the author(s) should be provided on a
separate page. For headings, first capital, and rest small letters in each word
for other headings. Five reprints of the published paper will be supplied free
of charge and sent to the corresponding author.

Mathematical Symbols and Notations
Symbols should be defined wherever they appear first in the text.

Drawings and Tables
All illustrations (e.g., figures, and drawings) should be drawn on good quality
tracing paper with dense black drawing in a proportion so that details (e.g.,
lines, numbers, symbols, letters) are clearly visible after a reduction to
alteast one half of the original size, and shoild be numbered consequently in
the order they are mentioned in the text. Each illustration should have a
legend; these should be on a separate page and numbered consequently. Tables
should also similarly numbered. With new generation DTP softwares, these could
be made embedded on the text. Photographs (in black and white, unless otherwise
warranted) should be submitted as un-mounted glossy enlargements showing good
details and moderate contrast.

References
References to published literature appearing in the text should be in the form "
as mentioned by Todd (1980)" or as given by Katiyar et al. (1993)". These
references should be listed alphabetically at the end of the text in the
following style:

Hello everybody

I am to model the movemenet of pollutants in the unsaturated zone.
The area which I am going to model suffers from nitrate pollution as
a result of heavy application of fertilizers and pesticides. Since I
have never modelled the unsaturated zone, but the groundwater, I have
some questions:

-What is the best methodology and software to handle this problem?
-I have hear of MikeShe and Hydrus, anyone has an idea about them? or
any advice regarding the best software to use?
-What kind of data is required to do this task?

I would highly appreciate any help

Hi,

I'm Praveena Mitran, a Media Research student from the University of
Pune. As part of my fourth semester dissertation, I'm conducting a
research on Online Communities. I was given the reference of this
group by Mr. C. P. Kumar. The aim of my research is `To study how
Internet is a platform in creating New Social Identities with
specific reference to online communities.' By online communities, I
mean an aggregation of people on the Internet who come together (to
form groups) in order to fulfill a particular purpose which is very
well defined.

In order to gain insight into such online communities, I'm conducting
an online survey of 100 respondents. I'm sending my questionnaire
across to you, which you can find at
http://www.geocities.com/praveena_mitran/index.html

Please take out some time to fill up the brief questionnaire. Your
inputs and efforts would be highly appreciated.

Dr Srinivas Rao
Thank you for your response sir. The objective of my
study is to understand and offer remedial solutions
for any freshwater problems caused by the tsunami -
especially in coastal India and the Andamans.

The way i see it, the study can be divided in the
following way:
1. Understanding traditional sources of freshwater in
islands and coastal areas
2. Understanding the impact the tsunami has had on
these sources
3. Offering remedial measures to restore these
traditional sources
4. Offer alternative sources of freshwater apart from
traditional ones - eg rainwater harvesting.

Dear Mr. Karan Singh,

Depending on the objectives of your search for freshwater locations (i.e.,
pinpointwise or pocketwise), the studies to be done.

Let me inform me your objectve of study and purpose of study. Then we will go
further study in detail. There is lot of literature available for the study of
freshwater identification and saltwater intrusion studies.

Regarding the tsunami affect on saline water, you should have to have the data
of water quality and groundstudies before the tsunami. Then we could compare the
extent and impact of tsunami on water quality. There is no doubt, the water
quality changes would be there, we have to able to demarcate the boundary upto
what extent that has been occured.

For detailed study, you reply with details with your objectives and purpose.

with best wishes,

yours

I face always the problem of long time delay by review of submitted

The question is: Does any of you have an idea about some Jounals in
the field of Groundwater and hydrology, that require less time for
peer review???

Thanks a lot.
