Dear Dr. Kumar,

Thank you for the links you submitted to the OLCIVIL web directory.
All the
links are activated and available here:

http://olcivil.com/Site/modules.php?name=Web_Links&l_op=viewlink&cid=2

It is quite impressing that you have managed to bring a large number
of
specialists and experts in different fields of water resources
through your
web-groups. I appreciate if you introduce the OLCIVIL website to your
students,
colleagues, etc. through your mailing lists. This will be a great
help to the
OLCIVIL website which is committed to the Open Source movement.

Thank you for your contribution

Hi Mr.Anil Kothari,

Apologies for late reply on your query.

You can find fundings from CSIR and DST Newdelhi. Find in their website for
forms and apply. Usually if you are applying for the first time, chance to get
the funding for your travel is more.

   Best wishes,

Dear all,

I am thinking of developing a simple hydrologic model to route flow on
pervious surface, for this I need to couple the KW equation with the
Green and Ampt equation (or any other infiltration model). I don`t know
where to start, but I am sure there are hydrologic models which use
these approach for flow routing.
If anybody has a literature on this area or an existing code so that I
can make my own modification and use it, or if I am going to start from
scratch I appreciate your ideas.
My problem is I am not good in programming and struggling to lean new
programming language.

Hope you will forward me some ideas

Dear Tom Clemo:

Thanks for your reply!, Sorry for the late reply I am on vacation for
few months. Yeah, after I post this message I have reviewed few of
the programming language, ex C++, MATLAB, and FORTRAN to choose one
to study. I thought MATLAB is good and I can understand it easily,
because I know the mathematics, the matrix operation and found it
easy for me. I am also attending C++ class and will see which one to
use, I more inclined to use MATLAB,
Regarding the cost no problem, I can get the programme for free, I am
working in a university that is not a problem ,

Thanks again for your advice,

AB

Several research assistantships are available at the School of
Forestry and Wildlife Sciences, Auburn University. The selected
student(s) will be working on the impacts of urban development and
land use/cover changes on hydrology as well as water quality of
forested ecosystems. Prospective candidates should be highly
motivated and preferably have a background in the physical aspects of
hydrology; especially watershed hydrology and water quality. The
research involves extensive modeling and model simulations;
consequently a background in modeling is desired but not necessary.
Knowledge and experience in computer programming is also favored.
Some of the projects involve site visits and data collection. These
positions open immediately.

Auburn University campus is conveniently located off Interstate 85,
and is only about 50 minutes by car from the city of Montgomery
(capital of Alabama) and about 1.5 hour from Atlanta. Auburn
University is consistently listed among the top 50 public
universities for the past 15 years and the Forestry program is in top
10 in research and publications.

Interested candidates should email a copy of their curriculum vitae
and a brief statement of research interest to Dr. Latif Kalin at
latif@.... Also mail copies of your most recent transcripts
and three recommendation letters to the address provided below.

I think the best way to find information about the multiplicative Seasonal

Dear Group Member,

I came across an interesting problem, as given below.

In an arid region, heavy depletion of water is observed from a
reservoir underlain by carvenous limestone. There could be either or
both of the following two reasons for the same.

1. In the submergence area of dam, a number of dug-cum-bore wells
exist which recharge the aquifer whenever the reservoir water level
rises above the parapet of the wells (acting as recharging wells).

2. Due to presence of wide fractures in the underneath limestone
layer.

I invite suggestions from the learned members regarding research
methodology to be followed for finding the real cause of heavy
seepage from the reservoir - hydrogeological investigations,
assessing the direction of seepage water / groundwater flow, nuclear
techniques, modelling of groundwater flow, and suggesting appropriate
remedial measures (such as sealing the wells with impervious clay).

Kumar

Abnet,
If you do not have very much programming experience, I recommend
MATLAB for new program development. It's advantages are that it is a
interpreted language rather than an compiled language and that matrix
manipulations are written similarly to the way we write them on paper.
The advantage of an interpreted language is that you get quick feedback
on errors and the errors are usually easier to understand than errors
identified by a compiler. This means faster program development. The
disadvantage of MATLAB over a compiled language is speed, though I am
told this is less of an issue than it used to be. For initial
development, processing speed should not be a significant concern.

I do not use MATLAB myself. I have used FORTRAN for many years and
am very happy with FORTRAN-90. I also use YORICK for situations where an
interpreted language is much more convenient than FORTRAN. YORICK is
excellent for data processing. I found YORICK a bit difficult to learn,
but wonderful once I have done so. My discussions with others have
convinced me that MATLAB is a better way to start scientific
programming. Experience with MATLAB significantly helps learning to use
a compiled language.

Another language you may want to look at is COMSOL which was previously
sold as FEMLAB. It is a really a higher level package that is based on
MATLAB aimed at solving problems where partial differential equations
are important. I know very little about it, but it seems to have become
very popular. I suspect the decision of COMSOL over MATLAB is cost of
the programs compared to cost of your time. You, of course, can't know
in advance the time advantage of COMSOL over MATLAB. A disadvantage now
is portability of your programming knowledge. MATLAB has been well
established for twenty years and relatively cheap. COMSOL is new, rare
and currently more expensive. So you can readily convince an employer to
buy MATLAB whereas COMSOL may be more difficult to convince them of.

For those who want free software, I am told that OCTAVE is very similar
to MATLAB as is SCILAB. Yorick is also free. I would be very interested
to learn of comparisons of these programs.

First you should start with FORTRAN.

Dear Abnet,

I would suggest using fortran langguage programs.
If you will be research of urban runoff, You can use of KINEROS model.

   regards,

   Sholichin

Dear All,

Kindly give your input

Study area: water quality model
Model used: STREAM 2
Problem: unable to calibrate the model as per
observations.

I am working on water quality modeling for river
Yamuna using Stream 2. Presently I am unable to
calibrate the model as per the primary (observed BOD,
DO, velocity data along the stretch of river) and
secondary data (flow rates, BOD, DO, location of
drains). Model requires input of no. of iterations to
be performed for calibration ie. Determination of
parameters, associated with DO, BOD. When I provide
input as no. of iterations it only does “1” iteration
and report the RMSE value which is of course wrong.
The results shown are non realistic, and observed
values cannot be seen in results.
I am not sure whether I am entering the data in some
wrong fashion or what.
But that seems to be right as its showing results
without calibration with arbitrarily assigned
parameter values.

Kindly help me in this regard.
Please let me know if some more details are required.
Input: 4 observations of DO, BOD along the stretch of
river.
DO, BOD data of 7 nodes (ie. 6 drains), 6
reaches.

Regards

Abnet,

It's very good that you want to develop some model. There are n number of
options from which you can develop the model. The programming language options
is depends upon what type of daat you want to use & which format you want the
ouput.

Still using following options you can develop your model
   1) Using ArcGIS or MapObject
   2) Excel & AutoCAD
   3) VB & Mapx
   4) C/C++

If you need any further information feel free to ask me. I can help you more.

   Regards,
   Prashant
