I would contact In-Situ, Solinst, Instrumentation Northwest, or another
manufacturer (easy to find via Google) and inquire about their used
datalogging pressure transducers. They sometimes have rental equipment
they sell for a significant discount if you ask. If you mention you are
an academic researcher, you may get a further discount. A few hundred
bucks might get you what you need, and if you're careful with it, you
could sell the instrument after your research is finished, and recoup at
least some of your investment.

Or, you could rent one if you only need a couple of weeks of data.

You can set the sample rate on some models for less than one second, if
that level of data density is useful to you. However, I don't know of
any that provide truly continuous (analog) data. All you need to run
them and upload data is a standard PC with some free software supplied
with the instrument.

Hi

Stilling well, staff gauges are some of the cheapest options. Mechanical water
level recorders, or notches are higher options.

Personally, i am interestested to know whats your study is about.

Hi Baki
For accurate continuous water level measurement, you have to
construct a Stilling Well, and install a Water Level Recorder over it.

You can base your research on some actual project. Please contact Dr.AS Shakir,
Chairmain, Civil Engg Department UET Lahore who is working as
specialist/Consultant on many assignments related to the Hydrology/ water
resources engineering.

You can also look into the MSc research thesis of the students of renowed water
related institutions on the internnet to get an idea of scope and quality of
work for research. I will advise you to visit www.unesco-ihe.nl for the relevant
information.

IWMI Pakistan located at Thokar Niaz Baig Lahore is also doing lot of research
work in hydrology.

Hi arie,

I also did validation of Climate Prediction Center's rfe_v2.0 (0.1 degree
resolution) over Nepal region in the central Himalaya and the result was
grossly underestimation by the satellite product and very few overestimation
during winter season when rainfall amount is not that significant.
I suggest you try to validate in a seasonally basis and regrid the data to

Aditi,

Happy to see your mail and some posts on the same by group colleagues.

Where there is a will there is a way. A mathematician with practical outlook can
do any thing with his knowlwedge. I feel you can also contribute in the water
management arena provided you understand and learn some of the underlying
processes along with inputs and outputs. So, I advise you read some standard
books.

Pl go through the books on 1. "Applied Hydrology" by Ven Te chow, David R
Maidment, Larry W Mays, Publisher: McGraw-Hill; 2. "Hydrology in practice"
by Elizbeth M Shaw, Publisher: Chapman & Hall; 3.  "Hydrology and flood plain
Analysis" by Philip B Bedient & Wayne C Huber, Publisher Addison Wesley; 4.
"Water Resources Systems" by S Vedula and P P Majumdar, Publisher: Tata
McGraw-Hill. Based on your area of specilization in Mathematics and Computers
you can develope your skills and venture into apprpriate water management
aspects whether it is water resources management or water quality management.

All the best

Dear friend

This field of water management requires mainly civil engg. background or at
least Environment/ oGeology or hydrogeology. The use of higher level maths is
needed for advance model developement area. It is too late too enter in this
field.

My dear,

it requires specialisation in this subject to do some thing.
you have to start from the basics. hydrology is a wast subject.
with a masters degree & 3 yrs of experience, i am just a beginner.
mathematics is different. it has applications in every field.
at least physics is very much related.

but any way, start it.
but why do you want to do something in the area of "Water Management"

its my opinion.
you are welcome for any doubts.

Bye,
Ranjit.

Hi Habid ...something to read

http://www.nofluoride.com/Unicef_fluor.htm

Defluoridation of water

There are basically two approaches for treating water supplies to remove
fluoride: flocculation and adsorption.

a.. Flocculation. The Nalgonda technique (named after the village in India
where the method was pioneered) employs this principle. Alum (hydrate aluminium
salts) - a coagulant commonly used for water treatment - is used to flocculate
fluoride ions in the water. Since the process is best carried out under alkaline
conditions, lime is added; bleaching powder can also be added to disinfect the
water. After a thorough stirring, the chemical elements coagulate into flocs
that are heavier than water and settle to the bottom of the container. The
operation can be carried out on a large or small scale, and the technique is
suitable for both community or household use. One household version uses a pair
of 20-litre buckets, with a settling time of one hour and not more than two
hours: after coagulation and settling are complete, the treated water is
withdrawn through a tap 5 cm above the bottom of the first bucket, safely above
the sludge level, and stored for the day's drinking in the second bucket.

b.. Adsorption. The other approach is to filter water down through a column
packed with a strong adsorbent, such as activated alumina (Al2O3), activated
charcoal, or ion exchange resins. This method, too, is suitable for both
community and household use. When the adsorbent becomes saturated with fluoride
ions, the filter material has to be backwashed with a mild acid or alkali
solution to clean and regenerate it. The effluent from backwashing is rich in
accumulated fluoride and must therefore be disposed of carefully to avoid
recontaminating nearby groundwater.

Peace Greetings from Kenya as well as my beloved Pakistan!

I trust all group members are fine and doing well. I am working as International

help me.
The problem is in Nairobi there is a borehole which is non functional and we
want its recommissioning but that bolehole water contains more than the normal
fluoride contents. How can we minimize the fluoride contents for drinking
purposes at Household level and also huge level for water supply?

Background:

Geoinformatics is increasingly being used to solve complex environmental
problems in domains such as management of natural resources, land use
planning and management, nature conservation, and environmental
monitoring, require reliable spatial information and methodologies.
Geoinformatics combines expertise from the fields of: - information and
communication technology (ICT); - geographical information systems (GIS),
remote sensing, GPS and mapping; - environmental and social sciences such
as land use planning, geography, and communication. This workshop provides
an overview of the key concepts and principles in Geoinformatics and its
applications in environmental management, areas of global and national
environmental concern. Various tools, which can be used to address
environmental problems and the role that the professionals can play in
managing environment in their respective areas would be discussed.

The workshop is meant for faculty (recognized engineering colleges in
India) and CiSTUP stakeholders. TA would be provided to the select
teachers. Faculty desiring for Travel allowance need to send a brief
write-up on Relevance of Geoinformatics in India and how Geoinformatics
workshop would benefit their career. Application and write-up is to be
routed through their institution. Selected outstation candidates would be
paid TA three-tier train / bus fare by the shortest route from the place
of work to IISc, Bangalore and back. The lodging charges at campus guest
house is Rs.150 per day (for teachers - sponsored by an education
institution)
