WAITLIST is candidates picked up for selected people who do not join - you of course know that.

However the offer to waitlisted candidates is not extended on waitlist rank - it is extended on the factor that for every candidate who turns down the offer, a similar candidate should be available for backup (to maintain diversity).

Has any body got an idea how many are genereally waitlisted and what are the chances?

Vikram.

IIM wont select all the good applicants. It shall select only top 80 applicants. Keeping that in mind i would suggest you to seek some outside professional help - search on google etc. asking for strategic help from other applicants (or competitors) is like Pepsi seeking consultancy from Coke :-) Why would I (or anyone) tell you how to crack IW :-)

Hi All,

Does anyone have any tips on how to prepare for the interviews? I understand the interviews are stress interviews to some extent but is anyone following some kindof plan on how to go about preparing for the interview?

I'm planning to keep it simple...just make sure that I get the basics down...know exactly what I would like to say for the standard why mba, why iima kindof questions. I feel that the rest of it I can't prepare for as it is so unpredictable.

Would be great if you all can share what you think has been helping you or has helped you in your interview prep.

Regards
Vikram

80 out of 350. I would assume 30-40 people in 350 may not prefer IIM-A and go to US institutes etc. This may cut down the battle to 80 out of 310. Which can be roughly assumed as 1 in 3 will get selected. This is not a bad selection ratio. It can be safely assumed that if we did 2 out of following 3 things wrong then we can count ourseleves out.

1 -- High GMAT (atleast 700)
2 -- High work experience (around 10 years)
3 -- U felt like u could not handle even 50% of their questions after walking out of the interview. U did not know about Stalin, Socretes, Lenin etc, U could contain them in Financial sector, U were made to believe that u better wake up.
This implies folks having 2 out of above 3 things should start working on finances.

My 2 cents.

Hi,

I may not be able to share the exact quote. But it was about relation
between two unrelated things. Quotes varied from person to person.

Yes. 3 mins was too short of time. When I exceeded, profs, politely asked me to conclude the presentation. My presentation was about how I
handled a operational crisis at my workplace ( I am from manufacturing
background).

The no of seats will be 80 only. Since IIMA is expanding their PGP
course, they are not in a position to expand the class this year. Mr.
Alok Jain of IIMA confirmed this.He also told that total no. of
applicants is 1400+.

The no. of candidates called for interview is about 350.(Someone in
pagalguy.com quoted this figure)

Were you able to manage your presentation in 3 mints. 3 mints is too
short of a time, one can hardly describe the problem let alone the
solution. If you dont mind, what did you pick as the presentation

Thanks for sharing your exp Kiran. It will help us for sure.

Seats are supposed to be 165, if I am right. Can you confirm whether it is 80.

My interview was on 19th at IIMA campus.. Totally there were around 40
applicants on 19th.I was interviewed by Panel-3. 3 prof/panel. first
asked me to show the certificates. Then asked me to tell abt myself.
few questions on my role, why MBA now. Then they gave me a quote and
asked me to comment on that for 3 mins. This took me by surprise and I
was blank . I did answer but could not convince the panel. Then the
presentation. I was asked to present in 3 mins.. Further the
discussion was on investment in india, pros and cons, govt policies,
investment in my sector ( Commodities -Metals), future growth. Asked
abt my views on US credit crisis, possible impact on my sector &
indo-us N deal. Few Qs on finance terms. Discussed abt my EC.
Interview lasted for abt 25-30 mins. Profs were very cordial, However
I felt it was little bit of stress interview. Whenever I was going
away from topic and try to drive the interview towards me, profs
politely asked me to come back to topic.Overall I am not sure how I
did? But could not do much to my own expectation. The best thing is to
be yourself. Professors are able to see through you.

Met some present PGPX students, visited campus and housing.
Infrastructure is good and IIMA is very serious abt making this a good
course. However this year also total no. of seats offered are 80 only.

Hi Girish,
My two cents worth:

it all depends on where you see yourself working for the next 5 to 10 years. If that is in Europe then you might be better off pursuing your MBA in Europe. If you would like to be working in India, IIMs (or ISB) would be your best bet. It is true that you can get international placements via PGP(or PGPX) in IIMs but it depends on a variety of factors. With regard to placements one key difference between IIMs and European B-schools is that in case of IIMs you are pretty much guaranteed  a decent job after you finish, whereas in European B-schools a lot depends on your own networking abilities rather than the school's placement cell. Also with tightening immigration rules throughout Europe, ability to get into companies who can sponsor your work permit/work visa also becomes an important factor.

Hi guys,
I am not part of this round of interviews but am keen on trying for PGPX next time round.
To me this particular qustion (type of roles after PGPX) is the most important one. I asked this question to a couple of passouts and current students of PGPX and mainly I was told that for IT guys, most of the roles would be in the pre-sales and business development area. There is very less scope for an IT guy to completely change careers by doing a PGPX.

Overall i have understood that after PGPX one should try to stick to his industry and figure out a non CEO kind of role to aim at. This ensure that you will get hired quickly during placements and with some % increase in salary. If changing carrer e.g. IT to investment banker is a desire then 2 yr MBA is suited and starting salary may not be higher than what u were making before. overall its good to do PGPX but keep ur expectations really really grounded.

Thanks for the reply. I know it is a dangerous question :-) I have
asked it even before I applied for PGPX. As you say, it is not a
question anyone seems to be interested in answering accurately.

I am not letting it affect my interview prep. But, we are all
curious, right? :-)

On a serious note, when people with 8-10 yrs of exp are taking time
off for PGPX, I think they should be given this info. After all, the
roles we can expect post PGPX can be as great an incentive as the
salary increases.

There will always be apprehensions for a new course. As long as it is IIM's i am not much worried. Obviously there will be inclination towards continuing in IT both from the companies and me as I dont want to lose the 11 years experience. As it is if I worry about this now, I will not be able to do justice to the interview. I am also applying for INSEAD and LBS to keep other options open.

Just to add to what Manish has rightly pointed out
PGPX is more like general management and Strategy in the same field you are in
having said that,Its also excellent for Professionals who are from PSUs and Govt(IAS and others)
For example a Guy from NTPC(NPCIL) can easily be absorbed into GMR,Reliance Energy with 2 times his current CTC.
Overall, PGPX is Great value addition and is a MUST for stagnating career/field
its also great for networking skills
all the best for I/V

Overall i have understood that after PGPX one should try to stick to his industry and figure out a non CEO kind of role to aim at. This ensure that you will get hired quickly during placements and with some % increase in salary. If changing carrer e.g. IT to investment banker is a desire then 2 yr MBA is suited and starting salary may not be higher than what u were making before. overall its good to do PGPX but keep ur expectations really really grounded.

all the best for iw folks.

Probably u can become consultant in McKinsey etc. Salary expectation
should not be more than 25-30 for 9-10 yrs exp.

Suggestion: Check for "PGPX" profiles in linkedin.
Not a very promising story.
