I would say brilliant Idea and its on expected lines
afterall IIM is a business model and they need to sustain the cash flow
All IIMs will sing in the same tune ISB and IIM-A sang years back
Country needs many such courses and let there be more seats and healthy competition
we need global manager at every level(more at CEO and middle management level)
we Indians are producing good quality engineers/MCAs but not in terms of  managers in last decades

Dear Friends,

Good News,
After IIMA, IIMC & IIML, now IIM Bangalore is starting one year
executive program from Apr 2009 onwards. The process is almost similar
to PGPX & PGPEX. The details are provided in the links below

I believe courses by B, C & L are undermining PGPX from A. As other institutes are excepting candidates who are in the transition of becoming manager unlike A.

Dont think it makes alot of sense for people like me (age: 33; GMAT700; VP position in famous dot com).
What do you folks think?

my 2 cents here .....I think average score in INSEAD or any other B-school is a wrong impression.
I have seen people with 760 not getting even an interview call (trust me they had good essays)
and that is because INSEAD values international experience and other things like foreign language knowledge a lot.

Monty,

The Insead average score this year is 703, and last year 707. If your
other attributes are ok, then 680 should be a reasonable score for
Insead. I am providing here a link on few of the FAQ on insead.

I have not reaserched on NUS, Hence not able to give any input on NUS.

Hi Anurag

The Kaplan test scors are not good indicators of how much you will
score in real GMAT. They are almost less by 70 marks.Almost everyone
who takes Kaplan are of the same opinion. I was scoring 570-620 in
kaplan and ended up in real GMAT at 690.

The princeton,Manhattan GMAT scores are very near to real GMAT. I was
scoring 670-740 in these tests.

The best is GMAT prep. It almost represents the real GMAT. I was
scoring 700-720 in GMat prep.

Very important in GMAT is managing time, especially in Quanta section.
I was consistantly scoring 48-49 in quanta during practise test, but
ended up 45 in real GMAT.I did not manage time very well and ended up
solving last 5 problems in last 2mins. Never spend more than 3 mins in
any problem. If you feel you are spending too much time on one problem
, then just guess and proceed. This is waht I learnt after my last
experience and decided to give GMAT again on 19th Jul-08. Hope that I
will not mess up like last time and cross 700 mark.

Cheers

Kiran

Monty,

The Insead average score this year is 703, and last year 707. If your
other attributes are ok, then 680 should be a reasonable score for
Insead. I am providing here a link on few of the FAQ on insead.

http://www.mba4success.com/benews_interview_content.php?id=70

I have not reaserched on NUS, Hence not able to give any input on NUS.

Cheers

Kiran

Hello Ankur / Kiran / Nitya and Kiran
Your discussions make interesting reading, and here I join with my thoughts on the subject:

[1] Non-IT / ITES background is a BIG advantage because ADCOM actively seeks diversity in the selected batch of students.

[2] We should not consider anything below 700 a guaranteed "shortlist-score". Guys, do retake GMAT to give yourself a better chance (and make life difficult for me :)

[3] My profile (not available on internet): 10 yr Work-Ex; 3 as manager || IT all the way || Engineer from IT-BHU with below average academic record || Scheduled to take GMAT on 21-July (previous GMAT score = 680) || Have attended PGPX interview in 2006 and was not shortlisted in 2007.

[4] I am looking for 1 year courses in India - will apply for PGPX / ISB / IIML this year, and XLRI / IIMC next year.

QUERY - How much did you guys used to score in your practice full lenght GMAT preparation? Scores from KAPLAN / PR / GMAT Prep etc - and the final GMAT score: are these close?

Thanks...Anurag

Posted by: "Monty" ankurchaudhary1947@... Date: Tue Jul 15, 2008 9:49 am Hi Friends
Wrote GMAT yesterday, got a 680 (M 49, V 34).
I am a BBA (General management) with industry experience of 6+ yrs in
Supplychain. Currently working with an MNC which is a chemical major in top
250 (fortune 500). Previously worked in a Paint MNC in supplychain.
Now, think is the right time to get an MBA under my belt. Academics have
been average.
Need your help to understand the chances at PGPX.
Thanks

Your profile is Non-IT, Hence you have an edge in diversity of profile. However
IMO, the GMAT score is on lower side. Remember the last year GMAT average is
728. Even for a non-it guy, 700+ may be required for interview call. But if you
can make it up with other attributes, then one may still have a chance. There is
nothing wrong in applying.
My GMAT is also 690 and i am also in the same boat. Cheers
Kiran

My Name is Shiva Bebarta and I have close to 11 years of work experience myself
in the corporate sector ..I have a bachelors in economics and an MBA from XIM
Bhubaneswar , class of 98 and currently am the country representative for a
large US Credit Card company and manage their IT Outsourcing ...

Like Nitya , I also gave my GMAT on 13th june but due to maybe overconfidence /
stress and poor time management got only 610 ..I am very particular on my choice
of B Schools which is London Business School , Sloan Masters , ISB / IMD and IIM
A PGPX ..Thought of INSEAD as well ..lets see as I am more keen on a general
management program and dont want to learn accounting basics all over again :--)

But with an MBA already done I am very inclined towards Sloan Masters Program
which does not lay much emphasis on GMAT but overall leadership exposure
Nitya , maybe you shd try for that as well ..

My linked in profile is attached below and I plan to take GMAT again in Late
September just because its been ages since I have taken competitive exams ..so
maybe that could be a factor ..

Date: Tue Jul 15, 2008 12:45 pm Dear Nitya,
IMO, Your profile is very good. The 590 GMAT is very less compared to
last year average. Please write exam again and try to get atleast
680-700. With this mark you stand a good chance as you are from public
services and in order to ensure diversity in class, ADCOM may prefer
people with your profile. The increase in class strength may lower the
average GMAT, But try to get atleaSt 700 in GMAT. Since you are also
in leadership position, it will add value to your profile. Please
demonstrate this in your application.
Please give GMAT again. I have improved my score from 640 to 690 in just one month and again giving the GMAT on 19th of this month. I hope
to cross 700 mark to get the interview call. I am also non- it (
manufacturing) guy with total experneice of 13 years, out of which 6
years of managerial experience.
cheers,
Kiran

Date: Tue Jul 15, 2008 12:55 pm Shiva,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Even I am trying for the program indicated by you. But IBS & Insead
may not be right choice for me as they cater to people with lower
experience ( typically 2-8 years). For people with 10 + years of
experience good programs will be IIMA-PGPX, IIMC-PGPEX, IIML - IMPX,
XLRI -GMP, LBS, Sloan masters, IMD. Can you think of any other schools, I am not sure of HBS, Kellog etc.
Need to do some research on these school
The top notch overseas schools definitly have an edge. I read in some
blog that after graduating from LBS, you will only look at replacing
the chairman of company you have worked.
The fees at these overseas school is exorbitant and funding need to be
looked at.
I will provide FT ranking fo top global Business schools.
Shiva : Why dont you give GMAT again in July- Aug and still try for
IIMA- PGPX
Cheers
Kiran

Date: Tue Jul 15, 2008 1:06 pm Sloan-MIT(?) is Excellent
But average GMAT is again 710+
(there is one MSc program of SLOAN under LBS but placement is not good)
even *Kellogg* loves Older guys(Its not one year though)
There is another school in USA which does like older applicants.dont recall
it now.
I have heard INSEAD too is great for guys who are having 7 yr+ WE(Infact 51%
guys are having more than 5-6 yr exp, pattern exactly opposite to our
Hyderbad based ISB)
average age in INSEAD must be around 30-31 thanks older guys
and Its the best in Gen mgmt(LBS is for Finance)
I want to pursue gen mgmt and corporate strategy
first thing first, like to get atleast 680+ in GMAT
for GMAT, the best group is

Thanks for the note below ..a slight difference between my profile and profile
of senior resources is that I already have an MBA so admissions team at IIMA
and other places will like to know a solid reason for doing an MBA again ..also
in the list mentioned by you , I would stay away from IIM Lucknow , Great Lakes
/ XLRI as they are not yet proven in their executive courses like IIMA PGPX and
IIM Kolkatta
You are right also abt ISB and INSEAD as I will be competing with junior
candidates for entry level roles as associate in banks and consulting firms
maybe at times ..This stems from me speaking with lots of current alumni at
these places
The more analysis I do , the more the sloan masters appeals along with IIMA
PGPX ..Maybe I will take a serious shot at both these ..LBS already has asked
me to send my profile as they have a few slots available for class starting
sept 2008 but I just cannot give up everything and join as I am married with 2
kids and also just tuition fees cost 40000 Pounds ...so have to try for
chevening scholarships and other resources
You shd surely apply for your dream courses and am sure all the rest will also
get into their choice of schools and wishing all the very best to this group

I will provide FT ranking fo top global Business schools.

Sloan-MIT(?) is Excellent
But average GMAT is again 710+

(there is one MSc program of SLOAN under LBS but placement is not good)

even Kellogg loves Older guys(Its not one year though)
There is another school in USA which does like older applicants.dont recall it now.

I have heard INSEAD too is great for guys who are having 7 yr+ WE(Infact 51% guys are having more than 5-6 yr exp, pattern exactly opposite to our Hyderbad based ISB)

average age in INSEAD must be around 30-31 thanks older guys
and Its the best in Gen mgmt(LBS is for Finance)

I want to pursue gen mgmt and corporate strategy
first thing first, like to get atleast 680+ in GMAT

for GMAT, the best group is
prachi_pareekh_gmat-subscibe@yahoogroups.com
please join!!
thanks for all the good inputs

Dear Nitya,

IMO, Your profile is very good. The 590 GMAT is very less compared to
last year average. Please write exam again and try to get atleast
680-700. With this mark you stand a good chance as you are from public
services and in order to ensure diversity in class, ADCOM may prefer
people with your profile. The increase in class strength may lower the
average GMAT, But try to get atleaSt 700 in GMAT. Since you are also
in leadership position, it will add value to your profile. Please
demonstrate this in your application.

Please give GMAT again. I have improved my score from 640 to 690 in
just one month and again giving the GMAT on 19th of this month. I hope
to cross 700 mark to get the interview call. I am also non- it (
manufacturing) guy with total experneice of 13 years, out of which 6
years of managerial experience.

cheers,

Kiran

Dear Abhi,

From what I gather, the earlier MBA is not going to have any negative
effect on your application. However you need to convince ADCOM, why
you are going for second MBA.

Cheers

Hi

I am a mechanical engineer and MBA by qualification. I did my MBA from
a Tier 2 B School in India, just after completing my Engineering
degree.Post MBA, I have been working with an Indian IT MNC and have
about 8 years experience in IT Sales and Marketing.
Now, I want to move up the value chain and get into strategic
management and consulting. To get ready for such roles and succeed in
industry, I believe I need to get back to the school.
Can anyone please help and tell me if my earlier MBA degree is going
to be any hindrance in my eligibility and selection for the program.

Thanks

Best Regards
Abhi

Can old rats learn new tricks?

Yes they can. I have personally witnessed 77 other rats figure the "how-to-survive-IIMA-PGPX-Term-I" trick out. Here is how IIM-A did that:

- Locked rats in a cage (called PGPX) with trick contraptions (really complex; and "crazy-sounding" subjects)
- Showed them a really large chunk of cheese that they can have in the future (senior management jobs!)
- Rewarded them with little morsels of cheese each time they made a headway figuring out a trick (grades)
- Punished them with little dozes of electric current (quizzes)
- And did not let them rest till they figured the tricks out – threw cold water (cases) at them, kicked the cage (term exams), and threw more puzzles (incrementally harder) at them each time they figured a trick out.
And wow, there is a group of semi-trained rats (not necessarily smarter ones though!).

The first term of the course is finally over and we had exactly 4 hours of break before the group jumped into the bulky (what else do you call 25 kgs of books and case spirals) second term material.

Here are some statistics of what the group (of rats) went through in the last ten weeks: (compiled by a colleague rat who is great at figuring out really complex "mazes")
- Worked on close to 75 cases
- Wrote 12 surprise quizzes/mid-term
- Wrote 9 full-length exams
- Attended 140 classes (each session – 75 minutes)
- Wrote/co-wrote/contributed to close to 50 reports/ submissions/PPTs

Don't you think rats (real ones) are luckier?

IIM-A`s exec batch draws CBI officer

BS Reporters / Mumbai/ Ahmedabad June 05, 2008, 4:55 IST

Keeping with its tradition of attracting students from diverse background, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) will see a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officerearning the nuances of management under the Post Graduate Programme for Executives (PGPX).

Rajesh Nirwan, a 39-year old Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) with CBI, is one of the selected 78 candidates for the course this year. PGPX is a full time residential programme for executives with substantial work experience leading to a One Year Post-Graduate Diploma in Management for Executives. The programme is designed for executives with 6 to 7 years of post qualification, full time work experience.

An IPS officer of Rajasthan cadre, Nirwan served as a Superintendent of Police in four districts including Jharawad, Tonk, Sawai Madhopur and Kota spanning eight years, before joining CBI's Economic Offence Wing as a DIG in 2004.

"After working for CBI on deputation for three and a half years, both me and my department felt a need to understand the management concepts of the contemporary world for optimum utilisation of resources for our police force," said Nirwan. A professional chartered accountant, Nirwan has also worked with Pricewaterhouse Coopers for nearly two years before appearing for IPS. Although on sabatical from work for one year, Nirwan is keeping his options open of joining the corporate sector after the programme.

The batch of 2007-08 had 80 participants for which the institute had received 800 applications. This year the institute has received 1347 applications. The average GMAT score is 724 this year. The average work experience was 10 years with around three years of international work experience as compared to this year's average of around 13 years work experience in India and 9 years abroad.

Arvind Sahay, Chairperson of PGPX, said that there are high number of participants from the IT sector this year.
