Abstract
In it's initial phase SF was criticised as a brash, emotionally dry, and a commercial form which was appeared in pulp magazine but today it is an
established genre of fiction. Readers from the different spheres of life are turning to it as an important "sign of time" on one hand , SF points to the existing corpus of knowledge and on the other , the fictional world . Herein attempt has been made to find answers to the questions
1) Why does a writer create fantasy? 2) How does a writer make fantasy acceptable to readers? 3) What is a writer's approach to reality?
The two elements fantasy and reality chiefly control the thematic content of SF. However , the term, is not to be viewed reductively; it can't be understood in the same sense. Reality, too, is understood in different ways. In the British SF from 1890 to 1970, in the cases of H. G. Wells, Aldous Huxley, George Orwell and J. G. Ballard fantasy points to reality. Reality is not within but out. In Olaf Stapledon , C.S. lewis and Arthur C. Clarke, it does not stress reality. It is not what we see in the outside world but within .The understanding of reality by different SF writer is different . Reality is not static but is dynamic. It is meaningful; it is not absurd.
