Why is science fiction so full of crime while the world is getting
progressively better?
Because science fiction is not written for the future, but for the
people in TODAY's world. If people in today's world are excited by
crime and death, then the science fiction writers have to incorporate
these elements in the fiction they write because books are written to
be sold.
That said, not all science fiction is about crime. A lot of it is
about how the citizen's of tomorrow's world live and what they feel.
-- Many science fiction stories are about how man struggles against
new environments. Take Larry Niven's 'Becalmed in Hell' for example.
It's about a man and his ship who go to planet Venus and almost don't
return.
-- Many of Asimov's Robot series stories are about the interplay
between human and non-human characters.
-- Even Philip K Dick who wrote a lot on the negativity of human
actions wrote a story like Roog! which is about a species that likes
to take away people's trash.
The idea is that it's very hard to categorically say that we can't
write science fiction stories that are free of crime. And anyways,
stories written in any time are a reflection of that age and society,
whether they're science fiction or fantasy is irrelevant.
