Re: [indiansciencefiction] Call For Fiction Submission KALKION
This is yet another example Gene which is indicative of the western outlook as Kalki in Indian mythology is depicted as saviour of humanity and is full of promise .The basic premise .of the incarnations of Vishnu in Indian mythology is explicitly and ephaticlly addressed in Geeta in the following sentences (loosely translated ) -
"As and when there is a decline of DHARMA (justice) and upsurge of wrong doings (ADHRMA) I re-create /manifest myself in some form or another ie reincarnations .." So the Vishnu' s AVATARS are full of great promise and hope for Indain people and one AVATAR is still kept in waiting and he is KALKI .....
thanks Gene !
Actually, many years ago the American novelist Gore Vidal wrote novel
titled KALKI, the protagonist being this last of Vishnu's 24 avatars.
Of course, the novel drips with Vidal's trenchant irony and cynicism
about the plight of the human race, and there were some points in the
story where I had the feeling that Vidal might be taking a few
broadside ripostes at Old Man Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land...
KALKI was not, to say the least, a happy book filled with optimism of
any kind. I almost wrote Vidal a not-so-fan letter to suggest he needed
to go pick another fist fight with Norman Mailer...
