Hi,
I am Dr.Srinarahari an Indian critic of Science Fiction as far as the world SF is concerned. I was keeping mum so far as to observe the opinions must be from individual and not based on the expert's opinion. I have kept a close watch and opened a folder and saved all the proceedings for posterity.
I was compelled to express my personal opinion here because it was a turning point.
The answer is that:
Science Fiction is a genre of study of the human responses to the emerging science and Technological progress. It is the study of the way of finding the responses to the contemporary problems projecting it to the future.
You can refer to the stories of the Asimov to Narlikar wherein you will find the solutions. They are spread over the problems of colonialism to regionalism..... and others. I have also dealt with the solutions to similar problems in my stories which are
published in adbhut.com and IASFS journals.
I have assigned such a problem to identify and expore the possibilities to my fifth MPhil student Manoj who hails from Tumkur, Karnataka state.
I cannot squeeze out much time over this issue as I am engaged in multifarious activities. Please bear with that till July 2007. please and please....
Yours,
Dr.Srinarahari

Following is Greg Bear's response to the message you posted on GregBear.com:
My answer is brief--I do this sort of thing much of the time, and so have many others--from Asimov and Heinlein to Michael Crichton--so I think the merger of sf with contemporary issues is a natural. Of course, we always like to get away from home and explore the far stretches of the imagination. A healthy balance! And please tell us more about your writer's group!
