The Times of India in its issue dt. 30th March has carried an multi- column article about sci- fi films in India.  In Lko edition, it's on page 15.  May like to go through.

According to it, about 6 or more sci-fi films are in the producion line and the budget for one of them is highest for any Indian film so far- 100 crore rupees (25 M US&)!  The producers include names like Shekhar Kapur, Harry Baweja, Anubhav Sinha, Goldie Behl,  Kuknoor.. and stars like SRK, Aishwarya, Priyanka and Abhi

I have my doubts about how many of these will be genuine sci- fi and how many plain fantasies.  But epsilon is always more than zero!

That's not correct Arvind ji, actually these spams are just ruining
the original lottery scheme that was launched two years ago. The basic
idea of the scheme was to promote the usage of the Internet and
popularize Yahoo! mail accounts. But there are many spoilers, so they
snatched this opportunity. There was a case filed in US (reference US
Department Of Justice, California State District Judiciary Bench #
ST7B89000 petition: Yahoo! vs Spammers) which tried to solve this case
and thus came out with ordering anti-spam solutions.

However the original consumer friendly lottery scheme got lost, but
they are still running it, its is just hard to tell which one is
original and which one is spam. So, I hope Dr Dubey ji might have come
across some original one, but deleted due to our suggestions.

Hope the best.

Dear Form members,
It looks like that god of wealth ā€œKuberā€ is extremely pleased with me. Many people around the world are desperate to shower wealth on me, incidentally most are from Africa. Is any one else on this forum is a second blue eyed baby for god these modern KUBERS (I think I am the first one) or had such experience in the past. Can any one tell what precautions I should take and where should I make the complaint? Swapnil jee come forward and advise.

MR ALHJI DANGOTE
The Bill and Exchange Manager,
Bank Of
Africa
B.O.A
Ouagadougou Burkina-Faso
West Africa
.
Phone: +226-75 00 22 19.
("REMITTANCE OF $25 MILLION U.S.A DOLLARS
                                   CONFIDENTIAL IS THE CASE")
Compliments Of The Season 2008,

This mail might come to you as a surprise and the temptation to ignore it as  unserious could come into your mind but please consider it a divine wish and accept it with a deep sense of humility, I am the manager of bill and exchange at the Foriegn Remittance Department of BANK OF AFRICA, Burkina Faso-West Africa, In my department we
discovered an abandoned sum of US$25 M (TWEENTY FIVE THOUSAND US DOLLARS) in an account that belongs to one of our foriegn customer who died along with his entire family in a plane crash.

Since we got information about his death, we have been expecting his next of kin to come over and claim his money because we cannot release it unless some body applies for it as next of kin or relation to the deceased as indicated in our banking guidlines and laws but unfortunately we learnt that all his supposed next of kin or relation died alongside with him at the plane crash leaving nobody behind for the claim..

It is therefore upon this discovery that I and other officials in my department now decided to make this business proposal to you and release the money to you as the next of kin or relation to the deceased for safety and subsequent disbursement since nobody is coming for it and we don't want this money to go into the bank treasury as unclaimed  bill because the banking law states that, if such fund remain unclaimed for many year's and then, the fund will be transfer into the bank treasury as unclaimed bill.

I agree that 30% of this money will be for you as a foreign partner, in respect to the provision of a foriegn account, and 60% would be for me,while 10% will be for expenses (if there is any) There after I will visit your country for disbursement according to the percentage indicated.. Therefore, to enable the immediate transfer of this fund to you as arranged, you must apply first to the bank as relation or next of kin of the deceased indicating your bank name, your bank account number, your private telephone and fax number for easy and effective communication and location wherein the money will be remitted.

Upon the receipt of your reply, I will send to you by fax or email the text of the application to fill and send to the bank. I will not fail to bring to your notice that this transaction is free risk and you should keep this transaction (TOP SECRET) and do not let the bank notice that, I contacted you to claim this fund but I will be giving you all information from the bank until the fund is transfered into your account.

You should contact me as soon as you receive this letter for furder details and please make sure you call me on the number bellow.

Yours faithfully.

 our

I agree that 30% of this money will be for you as a foreign partner, in respect to the provision of a foriegn account, and 60% would be for me,while 10% will be for expenses (if there is any) There after I will visit your country for disbursement according to the percentage indicated.

I crave your indulgence as i contact you in such a surprising manner.
But I respectfully insist you read this letter carefully as I am
optimistic it will open doors for unimaginable financial rewards for both of
 us.

In my department I discovered an abandoned sum of 10 Million Five
Hundred Thousand US dollars (US$10.5m) in account that belongs to one of our
 foreign customers who died on
11th September 2001,in the evening of
 World Trade Centre Terrorist Attack.
Since we got information about his death, we have been expecting his
next of kin to come over and claim his money because bank cannot release

as indicated in our banking guidelines, but unfortunately there is no

It is therefore upon this that I now decided to make this business
proposal to you so that the money could be released to you as the next of

since nobody is coming for it and i dont want this money to go into the

The request for a foreigner as next of kin in this business is
occasioned by the fact that the customer was a foreigner and a Burkinabe cannot
stand as next of kin to a foreigner. i agree that 40% of this money

I have heard about cases wherethey ask a small sum (say 100 $) after sometimes asconsignment charges or some such thing or ask you to deposit some money in account which will become yur a/c so that they can transfer a million dollars for you.  In another case, some one heacks your e-mail a/c and send messages to all and sundry calling for help as you are stranded in Africa with no money, duped by some one.

After some clever observation, yu may be able to find out.  Don't ever send any money to an unknown person, even if a million dollars are promised by Mrs. Abacha widow of former general ... etc.  who, in the name of God, seeks your help.

Nigeria is calling us and we should be vigilant ...they might have even more gimmicks in their store to lure us..so beware !

July 16, 2007
I was looking at my e-mail inbox with sleepy eyes one morning when I was jolted into attention by a message from my younger brother with the subject noted as 'Emergency'.

With trembling hands I clicked on the message to read that he had gone to Nigeria for a conference and had lost his passport, tickets and money. He was in deep distress and would like me to send him some money urgently through a Nigerian friend. He had signed with his old designation in Bangkok rather than his new one at his present post.

The words, 'Nigeria' and 'Bangkok' put me at ease, but I called him to ensure that he was sleeping at home. He was not sleeping as my son had already woken him up to alert him to the scam and he was busy answering calls and e-mails, assuring friends and relatives that he was in distress only because of the scam.

Nigerian scams are known to e-mail users around the globe, but this one was new because the message had come from my brother's e-mail account. Apparently, he had received a message, seemingly from the Hotmail team, asking him to confirm that he wanted to continue to operate his account, which was otherwise lapsing.

He naturally replied to the message in the affirmative and that was enough for the scammers to get hold of his password and hack into his account. Most recipients saw through the game and called, but a good soul, who saw the message rather late, offered to send my brother some money unless the emergency had passed. It is precisely this one innocent soul that the scammers target and succeed in cheating. They could not care less about a thousand others who deleted the message.

My brother cannot operate his Hotmail account anymore, but someone replies to messages relating to the 'emergency' in the hope that fools and their money are soon parted. The scammers are still waiting with a game plan to trap victims.

The Nigerian scams over the Internet are so common that there is a 'Wipe Out Nigerian Scams Team (WONST)', which itself is suspected to be a scam as it has been soliciting funds for its activities. No e-mail account escapes junk mail, which promotes diverse products, primarily love potions and anatomy enlargers. But Nigerian scams find their way into the inbox with compelling titles such as 'private and confidential' 'You have won a lottery' etc. Many of them, which I have gathered in a 'hoax folder', are cleverly written, but the language and format have become so familiar that it is no more necessary to read the messages to understand their intent and purpose.

Electronic scams are merely the manifestations of depraved minds using a new media. The technology may be new, but the technique is old. The history of scams goes back to the Spanish Prisoner Scam (1588). The victim was told that a wealthy man was in a Spanish prison and that he needed a huge sum of money to pay ransom. He could not reveal his identity, but if he was helped, the helper would be rewarded not only with money, but also the hand of his beautiful daughter. The middleman, of course, ran away with the money.

In a delightful short story, Roald Dahl narrates a scam in which a book shop owner sends bills to widows of celebrities, claiming that they had purchased pornography from him. Payments were made promptly to avoid embarrassment about the reading habits of the deceased. He gets caught only when the widow of a blind man challenges the claims. The advent of the Internet has just multiplied the number and variety of these scams.

Nigeria is synonymous with scams of various kinds. Since section 419 of the Nigerian Criminal Code deals with these crimes, these have come to be known there as the 419 crimes, just as cheats are known in India as 420. The most common scam is to send thousands of messages offering a large sum of money belonging to some known African dictator from a bank.

Once someone shows interest, different technical problems arise and the potential recipients are asked to make small payments to deal with formalities. Authentic looking documents are sent to the clients to create confidence and by the time the scam comes to light, the client would have dished out quite a bit of money.

Only one in a thousand may respond and only one in two thousand may pay anything at all. But the number of messages that go out are so enormous that the scammers are quite happy with the few responses that they get.

Internet cafes in Nigeria are closed between 1030 pm and 7 am and the scammers go to work in these cafes during these hours with the connivance of the owners. These are mostly people in their twenties, who are computer savvy. It is their inventive minds that generate diverse scams. Apart from the bank transfer scams, there are credit card scams, romance scams, lottery scams, inheritance scams, classified advertisements scams, escort scams, rental scams and even puppy scams.

Among the victims, who have reported their losses are people, who chased promises of donations and gifts, others, who have reached Nigeria in pursuit of large inheritances reported to be lying in banks and those who were lured by damsels in distress.

In the United States itself, losses on account of African scams are estimated to be in the order of $100 million per year. A CBS show featured a number of victims, who approached the US mission after they were swindled. Their tales were amazing as all of them were intelligent and educated people, who were attracted by the lure of illegal gains.

One priest, who was running an orphanage, was offered a large contribution and a lady was told that her deceased husband had left a huge fortune in a Nigerian bank. Both had paid money and even traveled to Nigeria. Financial losses apart, scams have resulted in physical harm and even death in certain cases. Kidnapping and arrests are also common. But still the industry keeps growing as new technologies becomes available.

Every paradise has its plague and scams have been invented to curse the Internet, which is a great blessing to humanity. Human ingenuity has created the Internet, human greed has created the scams to go with it.

2. Some  4 or 5 mails were received informing me that a younger son or wife of a bank manger/ Military General/ Dethroned Prince/ a person heir killed in Air accident etc. wants to deposit a huge amount of black money in my Bank Account.

3. Three mails intimating that a shipment for me consisting of thousands of Dollars in waiting at the sea  port. They keep on sendnmg 5th/ 6th/ 7th reminders to collect the same.

4. Almost daily mails to check that my bank account needs verification, failing which it would be locked or confiscated. In many of those Banks, I do'nt even have any account.

5. Most of the mails were originated from W. Africa such Nigeria, Ghana and some other such places.

Of course I never reply such mails, still they keep on coming.

I understand that many people were lured by such mails and when replied, they found that some person from West Africa came to their house, took them into confidence and they lost a lot of money in the name of VISA fee, Registration fee, Postal expenses etc.

BY giving their account number/ codes many persons have lost their deposits also.

So please do not reply any of the above mails. Just delete them without even opening their attachments.

I receive about a dozen like these every month.  There is another variety, a damsel in distress who is wife of a slain African general, or manager or...She neeeds help in managing million dollars.  I'd say, just ignore them. However, there is a cyber crime cell at Lko.  It comes under Police dept.  You may complain to them but they make come, take tea, investiagte your e- mails.  In short as usual with police, yur privacy may be intruded.  However, it seems they have cracked some serious and complex cyber crimes.  So if you are not hesitent in dealing with poilice, may go ahead and complain.  As a good citizen, may be that's what we should do.

I agree that 30% of this money will be for you as a foreign partner, in respect to the provision of a foriegn account, and 60% would be for me,while 10% will be for expenses (if there is any) There after I will visit your country for disbursement according to the percentage indicated.

And after all this type of topics are tending our brains towards latest science concepts like photon-photon collison, gravity without matter, antigravity etc.

This is a scam. Yahoo! does not send out these kinds of alerts. No credible internet business EVER sends e-mail like this requesting you to send personal information to confirm ANYTHING.

The scam is called ā€œphishing.ā€ Basically, a hacker sends out mail that looks like it comes from some place familiar or authoritative (banks, credit card companies, even government agencies) in an effort to get you to divulge personal information. If you fall for it, they steal your online identity and use it to steal your money from banks or fraudulent credit card charges.

Yahoo! Has a ā€œReport Abuseā€ e-mail address. You can forward such messages to its Abuse address. This, however, usually does not stop phishing mail from reaching you. Internet thieves are very industrious and send out millions of such messages every day. There are enough suckers out there to make it profitable for them.

Cheers,

Get yourself some good spam filtering software, like Spam Assassin. Otherwise, there is nothing practical you can do about this type of e-mail. Never, ever respond to any such messages. They are always just tricks to try stealing your money or credit card numbers, and even if you don’t fall for the offers, replying to such messages just confirms that you have a valid e-mail address. The spammer will then sell your address to other spammers, and you will get even more spam messages. In the worst cases, the spam also contains viruses that will install keystroke recording software and spyware, which will report your computer activity to hackers trying to access your personal information and financial records (like when you buy things on line), as well as turn your computer into a remotely controlled relay server for sending out more spam.

You can thwart some of this latter by installing firewall software. If you are using a Microsoft Windows operating system, an application called Zone Alarm is generally considered the best firewall package available, and it’s free. You can also pay a small fee for Zone Alarm, which will unlock the program’s other features, like virus removal and spam blocking.

Good spam filtering software will send 99% of the spam to a Junk Mail folder so you never have to see it, and you can set the filtering software to automatically purge spam messages from the folder on a regular schedule. I suggest that you read up on spam filtering software to get a better idea of what it can and can’t do.

Cheers,

Gene van Troyer

I agree with Tiwari jee's contention; it's not pseudoscience as it does n't pretend to be science at all and it's not.

It'd come in the realm of Adhyatma or Philosophy. Pseudo scence is (rightly) looked down upon and all those who discussed it, were aware that it's not sciience.  But such issues do come up these days as science progresses and we dare to tackele topics which always appeared beyong the domain of science.  Increase in sci power has give us that confidence.  but I agree with Swapnil jee nand Arvind jeethat we may ot go further on this.

Let us stick to SF, by and large, with some small detours permitted.
I would not call discussion of soul or Atman etc as pseudo science.

Yes,I agree because such things are beyond the understandings of present day science ,in fact not even remotely linked with contemporary S&T-someone may even brand such discussions  as pseudo-science ,some sort of a sin for science communicators.
Don't we realize that being science communicators its our prime  duty to communicate science in its letter and spirit and not the 'no science' -nonsense or for that matter pseudoscience.
While I do realize that concepts like soul-ATMA,PARKAYA PRAVESH [mystical Hindu  practice of entering into someone else' body in energy form],rebirth  are quite interesting
and have their own importance in many other humanitarian knowledge disciplines but they fall short of scientific rigor and scrutiny.
It would be appropriate not to promote such things in the name of science/sf or at least have have some restrain over focusing on items like that .
There must be a line of demarcation in between science and pseudoscience ?
But what  pseudoscience is really  about ?How could we define 'pseudoscience' ?Is really there any discipline in academia  like that  ?
We could discuss on it in yet another interesting session like this one !But if someone wants to prolong the continuing discussion under this thread he may do it on  his own risk -of the things as stated above.

here is a breather...but can anyone explain why this happens?

EYE TEST FOR GILS AND BOYS
male or female... Quick Eye Exam...

This will blow your mind...!

Just do it - don't cheat!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try this its actually quite good.

But don't cheat!

Count the number of F's in the following text in
15 seconds:

FINISHED FILES ARE THE
RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC
STUDY COMBINED WITH THE
EXPERIENCE OF YEARS

Managed it?

Scroll down only after you have counted them!

OK?

How many?

Three? (You r definitely male!!!)

Wrong, there are six - no joke!

Read again!

FINISHED FILES ARE THE
RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC
STUDY COMBINED WITH THE
EXPERIENCE OF YEARS

The reasoning is further down...

The MALE brain cannot process the word "OF".

Incredible or what?

Anyone who counts all six F's on the first go has
a brain of a Female

MR ALHJI DANGOTE
The Bill and Exchange Manager,
Bank Of
Africa B.O.A
Ouagadougou Burkina-Faso
West Africa.

I agree that 30% of this money will be for you as a foreign partner, in respect to the provision of a foriegn account, and 60% would be for me,while 10% will be for expenses (if there is any) There after I will visit your country for disbursement according to the percentage indicated.

If we are scientists only, we can stop the topic. But If we are science fiction writers then further expansion of discussion will be beneficial. Because it opens the new doors of futuristic researches and possibilities where science can be reach in future.
And after all this type of topics are tending our brains towards latest science concepts like photon-photon collison, gravity without matter, antigravity etc.

Also can there be some filter before we initiate a discussion which
could, by voting, or concensus, decide whether this topic makes sense

Nigeria is calling us and we should be vigilant ...they might have even more gimmicks in their store to lure us..so beware !

Nigeria Calling: Indians beware!

T P Sreenivasan, a former member of the Indian Foreign Service, was India's ambassador to the United Nations, Vienna, and governor for India, International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna.

discovered an abandoned sum of US$25 M (TWEENTY FIVE THOUSAND US DOLLARS) in an account that belongs to one of our foriegn customer who died along with his entire family in a plane crash.

I agree that 30% of this money will be for you as a foreign partner, in respect to the provision of a foriegn account, and 60% would be for me,while 10% will be for expenses (if there is any) There after I will visit your country for disbursement according to the percentage indicated. Therefore, to enable the immediate transfer of this fund to you as arranged, you must apply first to the bank as relation or next of kin of the deceased indicating your bank name, your bank account number, your private telephone and fax number for easy and effective communication and location wherein the money will be remitted.

This is a scam. Yahoo! does not send out these kinds of alerts. No credible internet business EVER sends e-mail like this requesting you to send personal information to confirm ANYTHING.

The scam is called "phishing." Basically, a hacker sends out mail that looks like it comes from some place familiar or authoritative (banks, credit card companies, even government agencies) in an effort to get you to divulge personal information. If you fall for it, they steal your online identity and use it to steal your money from banks or fraudulent credit card charges.

Yahoo! Has a "Report Abuse" e-mail address. You can forward such messages to its Abuse address. This, however, usually does not stop phishing mail from reaching you. Internet thieves are very industrious and send out millions of such messages every day. There are enough suckers out there to make it profitable for them.

Cheers,

Gene van Troyer

This is a scam. Yahoo! does not send out these kinds of alerts. No credible internet business EVER sends e-mail like this requesting you to send personal information to confirm ANYTHING.

The scam is called “phishing.” Basically, a hacker sends out mail that looks like it comes from some place familiar or authoritative (banks, credit card companies, even government agencies) in an effort to get you to divulge personal information. If you fall for it, they steal your online identity and use it to steal your money from banks or fraudulent credit card charges.

Yahoo! Has a “Report Abuse” e-mail address.

Dear Friend,
I am the manager of bill and exchange at the foreign remittance
 department
of BANK OF AFRICA (B.O.A) here in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. In my
department we discovered an abandoned sum of US$30m dollars
(THIRTY
Million US dollars) in an account that belongs to one of our
 foreigncustomer
(MR. ANDREAS SCHRANNER from Munich, Germany) who died along with
his entire family in Jully 2000 in a plane crash.

Since we got information about his death, we have been expecting his
 next
of kin to come over and claim his money because we cannot release it,
unless some body applies for the next of kin or relation to the
 deceased as
indicated in our bankingguidlings and laws but unfortunately we learnt
 that
his  next of kin   died along with him in the plane crash.

The banker law and guidline here need  a responsable person, and who the
bank can introssted this  treasury as unclaimed fund. The request of
foreigner as next of kin in this business is occassioned by the fact
 that the
customer was a foreigner and a Burkinabe cannot stand as next of kin to
 a
foreigner.

I agree that 30% of this money will be for you as a respect to the
 provision
of a foriegn account , 10% will be set aside for expenses incurred
 during
the business and 60% would be for me Thereafter, I will visit your
 country
for disbursement according to the percentage indicated Therefore, to
enable the immediate transfer of this fund to you arranged, you must
 apply
first to the
bank as relation or next of kin of the deceased indicating
 your
bank name, your bank account number, your private telephone and fax
number for easy and effective communication and location where in the
money will be remitted.

Upon receipt of your reply, I will send to you by fax or email the text

arrangements have been made for the transfer. You should contact me
immediately as soon as you receive this letter.

Trusting to hear from you immediately.

Dear Form members,
It looks like that god of wealth “Kuber” is extremely pleased with me.
