Dear friends,

Finding right and willing publishers is a sorely felt need.

I invite friends to suggest a list of publishers who can publish
SF in English. Publishers based elsewhere but also having footing in
south india may also be listed.

I would appreciate an early reply.

Mishraji,

            Overall the document is comprehensive.

The thrust of the convention is to use SF as a means of
science communication. In a personal chat Dr.Patairiya opined
science articles have failed to deliver. I differed station that
both science article and SH can complement each other with science
articles having the elements of ficiton and ficition having the
content of science article through imaginative dialogue between
charecters in the ficiton.

Science articles and SF both can be used as means of science
communication. Both have their own utility. News paper stores like
chandrayan launch, discoveries all are essentially science articles.
There fore sceince artilces need to be given due repect by the SF
buffs also.

(i)A seperate TV channel for science is a need of the hour as SF
can also be included in it. This may be taken up with Information
and Broad casting ministry and Doordharshan. This was mooted my me in
the discusson.

(ii)A panel of noted SF writers may be formed to be used as
resource persons in conducting workshops for aspirant writers.

(III)A panel of translators may be formed for translation of
regional SF into english as English is a universal language and the
need to take Indian SF to the world community.I write bilingually in
Tamil and English. I am willing for translation work into Tamil from
English and vice versa. A panel may include translators like me.

(iv) Media and TV people may be invited to cover the events from
day one as it will give exposure to the participants -writers and
generate wide publicity to event and promote SF.

(v)Publishers who have nation wide footing also having south
footing may be roped in as geogrphically south based people have to
go to places like Delhi to meet the publishers.

(vi)A panel of publishers may also be created for SFs.

   Hope the suggestions are useful

Friends,
It could have been termed Benaras Manifesto on sf -2008 as well but the majority agreed to see it in the form of a document only so here it is at least in its  prelaminary tentative form .The drafting has been done by Professor Sagarmal Gupta,Sobhasaria Eng. college ,Siker Rajsthan. It has been posted here  also.Would you like to add  or suggest to delete something which looks redundant, superflous or not that much important in your assesment.Your views to upgrade the document would be highly appreciated.

The Background

A five day (November 10-14, 2008) National discussion entitled `The First Ever National Discussion: Science Fiction: Past, Present Future' was organized in the holy city of Varanasi, India. The event was jointly sponsored by National Council for Science and Technology, Communication (NCSTC) New Delhi, Indian Science Fiction Writers' Association (ISFWA), Faizabad, Indian Association for Science Fiction Studies (IASFS), Vellore.
The conference was convened and coordinated by Dr. Arvind Mishra,  a science fiction writer and science activist himself. The conference was attended by about 100 delegates from all over India, including SF buffs, SF writers, SF readers, critics, professors, administrators, persons from the media, puppeteers, magicians science activist and students and researchers of science communication and SF genre.

The landmark achievement of the Conference is the preparation of Benaras Document – 2008, which will go down in red letters in the annals of SF in India. This document is the brainchild of Dr. Manoj Patraiya, Director NCSTC .

Preamble
Fiction writing and reading is very popular among intellectuals.Lately India has produced Salman Rushdie, Arundhati Roy, Kiran Desai and Arvind Adiga, who have won the coveted and prestigious Booker Prize for their novels. Detective Fiction by Sherlock Holmes, Raymond Chandler, Earl Stanley Gardner and a host of other writers are widely read all over the world. SF, on the other hand, (though almost 150 years old in its origin) does not enjoy that much readership.
A science fiction is a fine fabric of a number of elements together interwoven in a manner so as to entertain the reader on the one hand and to arouse one's creative imagination on the other. It can also inform us with an analytical and rational approach as also enable us to foresee futuristic perspectives. Several classical Science fiction stories prepared the ground for a number of landmark inventions. Further, it has tremendous potential to motivate, to educate and entertain the masses especially the children, science fiction can be a popular means of science communication.

But it is sad that it does not enjoy that popularity which is enjoyed by fiction in general and detective fiction in particular even in the age of science and technology. Concerted effort on the part of writers, readers critics, syllabus framers, publishers, and media personnel is required to popularize science fiction. Hence `The Benaras Document'.

Objective
The objective of the Document is to popularize and propagate SF amongst children, students, researchers, professors, common readers and science buffs in particular and to create science awareness and scientific temper in general.
Questions That were Addressed to
The Document addressed itself to the following questions in five sub-committees formed out of the conference delegates:
1. What is Science Fiction?
2. Is Science Fiction a part of Science Communication?
3. Should Fantasy be included in SF?
4. Is Speculative fiction a part of SF?
5. Should SF be anachronistic, synchronistic or futuristic or would be all the three?
6. What is the objective of SF?
7. Should the history of SF be included in the Document?
8. What is the scope of SF?
9. What recommendation can be made for the promotion and propagation of SF?
10. Should SF be included in the curricula?
11. What strategies be adopted for the teaching of SF?

The Draft Outline

There was a lot of disagreement about the definition and scope of Science Fiction among SF writers and SF buffs. Some writers insisted on SF being futuristic whereas some were happy with the synchronic description of Science and Technology in SF. Some writers were against including fantasy whereas others felt that fantasy helped in resolving the problems of reality. Some insisted on the inclusion of human values in SF – writing. Some discussants argued that anachronism is a disqualification in literature but there could be a place for anachronism, synchronism and futurism in SF. One critic of SF felt that SF is a literary art; structure is important and human sensitivity is also important, he argued. According to some writers, science fiction combines both literature of knowledge and literature of power. One writer of science communication went to the extent of saying that SF is a part of Science communication whereas one writer of SF vociferously refuted this supposition and said that SF and Science communication are entirely different and by writing SF, we are not popularizing SF. Arguing against the inclusion of human values, one SF writer says that the term human values is a relative term and is governed by time and place whereas SF is neutral to such human values.

Finally, all the delegates came to define SF in the following words. SF deals with the impact of actual or imagined science upon society or individuals; it often involves speculation based on current or future science or / and technology. Science Fiction combines science elements with fictional elements in such a way that the form and content are fully merged. Fantasy cannot be ruled out from SF because any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Like a literary fiction, SF has a plot, characters, and a point of view. The plot of SF is scientific in that it is based on current or future laws of science. It can make predictions about future science but need not. The plot of SF should follow Aristotle's dictum to the effect that there can be probable impossibilities in SF but not improbable possibilities.

The scope of SF is extending. SF started as adventure stories (Vide Jule Verne's From Earth to Moon (1865) and `Around the Moon' (1870); `Aashcharya Vrittant' (`A Strange Tale by Ambika Dutt and Chandra Lok Ki Yatra, `Journey to the Moon' by Kesav Prasad Singh in Hindi; in Japanese, Ukeshiro Monogartan by Yano Ruykeis) and included lunar journey, space exploration, robotics, mathematics, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, surrogacy, genetic engineering, cloning and stem cells in its fold. The current SF includes cyberpunk, space opera, alternate history fiction, science satire, motion pictures and television series in its fold. In contemporary SF, there is a combination of myth with modern technology Ashok Kumar Banker reimagines The Ramayan in a SF context. This treatment of the Ramayan is parallel to CS Levi's treatment of the New Testament in `The Chronicles of Namia. These examples highlight the extension of the scope of SF in the contemporary world and refers to its unlimited possibilities.

Recommendations

The following recommendations were made by the delegates to ensure the promotion and propagation of SF:

(1) It was suggested that an SF Cell be set up with a Director in a University with the financial assistance from NCSTC, New Delhi. This Cell will be entrusted with the following responsibilities among others:

(a) This cell will look after the promotion and propagation of SF and SF studies.

(b) It will award fellowships to researchers to do research on SF including Indian and regional SF.

(c) It will arrange national and international conferences on SF in which publishers too be invited among others.

(d) It will organize workshops on SF for new writers and students of science communication to train them in the art of SF.

(e) It will organize contests among SF writers at regional and national level.

(f) It will promote translation of regional and Hindi SF writing into English and vice versa.

(2) Arrangements be made to broadcast and telecast SF.

(3) Serials on SF Like `Star Trek' be telecast and broadcast.

(4) Blogs and websites be created to promote SF.

(5) Boards of Secondary Education and Universities be approached to include SF in the curriculum.

(6) Effective Teaching Strategies be evolved to teach SF in the classrooms so that its readership can be increased.

The Benaras Document in its present form is just preliminary. Comments and suggestions are invited from other participants of the national discussion and general audience to make the Document more meaningful, action and result oriented.

The Rs. 120 price is not available from your friendly neighbourhood
stationers. I got this from Nehru place (which is very near my

SPACE-ISRO-PROPOSAL
ISRO submitted proposal to launch manned flight into space

Shillong, Jan 4-2k9 (UNI) The Indian Space Research Organisation
(ISRO)
has submitted a proposal to send its first manned flight into space
by 2015, an ISRO official said today.
Dr K Radhakrishnan, member of Space Commission and Director of
Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, said the proposal has been sent to the
government and approval is awaited.
''There are plans to send a two-member crew into space and orbit
around 200 kms away from the earth,'' Mr Radhakrishnan, who was here
at the 96th edition of the Indian Science Congress, said.
The space scientist said the proposal to send a manned spacecraft
was sent after India successfully launched the Chandrayaan-I on the
Moon. ''ISRO also has plans to hoist the tricolour by an Indian on
the Moon before 2020 and a Mars mission during the same period,'' he
said.
All are at a conceptual stage, he said, adding, ''Obviously
everyone is happy with the successful launch of Chandrayaan and now
there are preparations for Mission Chandrayaan-II after the
government approval.''
Chandrayaan-I was mostly a remote-sensing spacecraft scanning the
lunar surface for minerals and water, Chandrayaan-II would be a
lander-rover with capabilities to move on the moon's surface.

SCIENCE-CONGRESS-CHANDRAYAAN
Chandrayaan dominates day two at 96th Indian Science Congress

Shillong, Jan 4-2k9 (UNI) Hundreds of children in Shillong watched
with great enthusiasm and expectations as a film took them on a
journey to the making of Chandrayaan-I here at the ongoing 96th
Indian Science Congress, ISC -2009.
The film was brought to them by none other than Prof M G K Menon,
an eminent scientist and the Chancellor of North Eastern Hill
University, NEHU. The show and the interaction there after was part
of the North Eastern Region (NER) Awareness Programme for School
Children.
ISRO's Chandrayaan-I success story was also the theme of one
of the Plenary sessions chaired by Dr K Radhakrishnan, Member, Space
Commission and Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre. Several
members of the Team Chandrayaan-I participated in the discussion and
enlightened the audience with detailed information on various
aspects of the project.
A large number of people visited the ISRO stall within the NEHU
Campus to see the Chadrayaan-I model.
Earlier, a panel discussion on Societal and Technological
Response to Climate Change saw several eminent experts in the area
deliberating on issues related to the subject. These included Dr M S
Swaminathan, Member of Parliament, Dr R Chidambaram, Principal
Scientific Advisor to the government, Dr Shailesh Nayak, Secretary,
Ministry of Earth Science, Dr Anand Patwardhan, former Executive
Director of TIFAC, Prof Jyoti Parekh of eRADE, Dr Suman Sahai of
Gene Campaign, an NGO and the youngest Member of Parliament, Ms
Agatha Sangma.
The other sessions included a thought provoking discussion on
Women in Science. This was chaired by Dr Manju Sharma, former
secretary, Department of Biotechnology. It focused on gender issues
and why women lose out. Several young students came out with useful
suggestions to counter the problems faced by women in furthering
their careers as scientists.
Dr R A Mashelkar, former Director General, CSIR, chaired the
session on CSIR in 21st century which focussed on using high science
for India's technological prowess. CSIR has also put out an
exhibition on its Project 800, where the display of "Solekshwa", an
eco-friendly solar operated cycle rikshaw, is drawing huge crowds.
Later, addressing a press conference, Prof Samir Brahmachari,
Director General, CSIR explained the concept of Project 800, which is
expected to touch the lives of 800 million people across the
country. He also announced setting up of CSIR-NEHU Centre of
Excellence.
There was also a symposium on "Need for Innovative PPP Models for
Science Education to Empower Emerging India".

SCIENCE-INDIA-SIBAL-RESEARCH
Sibal calls for utilitarian and result oriented research

Shillong, Jan 3 (UNI) Emphasing that research should be utilitarian
and result oriented, Union Science and Technology Minister Kapil
Sibal today said resources should be spent on projects which can
offer quick and lasting solutions.
Delivering a key-note address at the 96th edition of the Indian
Science Congress held at North Eastern Hill University here, Mr
Sibal said the country needed to continue with its efforts to ensure
a strong future supply of scientists, engineers and technologists
and to unlock the talents of all people in the country to use
science and technology to help them lead their lives more richly.
Expressing concern over the misuse of technology for destructive
purpose, the Union Minister said the answer to the problem lies not
in embracing a technology denial regime, but act in the belief that
technology alone can provide answers to those who seek to misuse it.
Mr Sibal said the challenges for society are formidable and will
require substantial information, knowledge, wisdom, and above all
collaboration between the scientific community, policy makers and the
public.
Observing that the importance of scientific engagement across
society and the potential for science to contribute to good policy
making and sound governance has never been greater, the Union
Minister expressed confidence that it is only science which will
help the nation address the challenges facing it.
In this regard, Mr Sibal believed that there is a pressing need to
strengthen the level of high quality engagement with the public on
all major scientific issues; and increase the number of people who
choose to study science subjects and to take up research and
scientific careers.

PM-MEGHALAYA-SCIENCE
PM urges industry to invest in R&D

Shillong, Jan 3 (UNI) Urging the Indian industry to invest in

Research and Development to boost the demand for sciences and

technology graduates and researchers, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh

today promised to double allocation in science to two per cent.

''India is lagging behind not just the developed western nations,
but also the new industrialising economies of Asia,'' Dr Singh said
while inaugurating the 96th edition of Indian Science Congress at
the North Eastern Hill University here, even as he called for the
new wave of investment from private sector to encourage young people
to seek a career in science.
''They must look at the role played by public investment in
nuclear energy, space and defence related industry in creating the
demand of science and technology graduates,'' the Prime Minister
said.
Stating that the best science is done by young people, Dr Singh
urged the institutions to be receptive to the needs of this segment.
''Seniority and age may be relevant in bureaucratic systems, but
scientific institutions must be led by intellectual leaders
irrespective of age,'' he said.
He said the budget outlay for the Ministries of Science and
Technology and Earth Sciences had been trebled for the last four-year
period--2004-08, relative to the previous four year period--2000-04.
''The government has mounted several promotional measures to
strengthen the Research and Development base in the country and 50
per cent research fellowships for doctoral students has been
increased,'' he said.
Stating that the government has placed the highest emphasis on
making a career in science attractive to young students, Dr Singh
said his government had widened the higher education base of the
country by investing in the creation of 30 new Central universities,
five new Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, eight
new Indian Institutes of Technology and 20 new Indian Institutes of
Information Technology.
''New institutes for research in Himalayan glaciology, molecular
materials, nano science and technology are to be created, besides an
inter ministerial group of secretaries in the bio-technology sector
and Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council,'' he said.
There are also proposals from the Ministry of Science and
Technology to adopt a Cancer Research Institute in Chennai,
Institute for Advanced Study in Science and Technology in Guwahati
and the National Innovation Foundation as guarantee institutions.
The Prime Minister also informed that a Bill had just been passed
by Parliament to set up a National Science and Engineering body. The
Research Board would be responsible for bringing a major change in
the scientific research scenario and funding.
Bills for Protection of Intellectual Property Rights for publicly
funding research and for Medical Devices Regulation are on the
anvil, he added.

INDIAN FILMS BASED ON SF STORIES

  • Kaadu (The Jungle): A 1952 film. A Tamil-American co-production, this film was about an expedition to find the cause of strange behaviour of animals in an area. As it turned out, the reason of this abnormal behavior was an invasion of wooly mammoths.[1][3]
  • The Alien - A science fiction film under production in the late 1960s which was eventually cancelled. It was based on a short story named "Bankubabur Bandhu (Banku Babu's Friend)" by Satyajit Ray where an extraterrestrial by the name of "Mr. Ang" visits a Bengali urbanite while visiting a village in the 1960s.
  • Patalghar - a Bengali language alien visitation film.

It's not a single story but a collection.

I've'nt read anything from it yet, though I've read several of his
novels. Charmingly written, but sometimes feel a bit dated on social mores.

He also seems to have written a couple of stories some people think are
sf. I've not read any of his sf, but there was one story that got some
coverage in English sf blogosphere some months back.

Respected Mohan sir,

Sorry for late response. It’s a news to me that discovery of Viagra is based on some Nobel Prize discovery. Can you elaborate more on this? However history attached to the discovery of Viagra is attached

Regards,

Viagra(Chemical name-Sildenafil citrate)

Viagra,Sildenafil citrate, sold under the names Viagra, Revatio and under various other names, is a drug used to treat male erectile dysfunction (impotence) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), developed by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. Its primary competitors on the market are tadalafil (Cialis), and vardenafil (Levitra).

                                    History

Sildenafil (compound UK-92,480) was synthesized by a group of pharmaceutical chemists working at Pfizer's Sandwich, Kent research facility. It was initially studied for use in hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina pectoris (a form of ischaemic cardiovascular disease). Phase I clinical trials under the direction of Ian Osterloh suggested that the drug had little effect on angina, but that it could induce marked penile erections.[1][2] Pfizer therefore decided to market it for erectile dysfunction, rather than for angina. The drug was patented in 1996, approved for use in erectile dysfunction by the Food and Drug Administration on March 27, 1998, becoming the first pill approved to treat erectile dysfunction in the United States, and offered for sale in the United States later that year.[3] It soon became a great success: annual sales of Viagra in the period 19992001 exceeded $1 billion.

The British press portrayed Peter Dunn and Albert Wood as the inventors of the drug, a claim which Pfizer disputes.[4] Their names are on the manufacturing patent application drug, but Pfizer claims this is only for convenience.

Even though sildenafil is only available by prescription from a doctor, it was advertised directly to consumers on US TV (famously being endorsed by former United States Senator Bob Dole and football star Pelé). Numerous sites on the Internet offer Viagra for sale after an "online consultation", a mere web questionnaire. The "Viagra" name has become so well known that many fake aphrodisiacs now call themselves "herbal Viagra" or are presented as blue tablets imitating the shape and colour of Pfizer's product. Viagra is also informally known as "Vitamin V", "the Blue Pill", as well as various other nicknames.

In February 2007, it was announced that Boots the Chemist would trial over the counter sales of Viagra in stores in Manchester, England. Men aged between 30 and 65 would be eligible to buy four tablets after a consultation with a pharmacist.[5]

Pfizer's worldwide patents on sildenafil citrate will expire in 2011–2013. The UK patent held by Pfizer on the use of PDE5 inhibitors (see below) as treatment of impotence was invalidated in 2000 because of obviousness; this decision was upheld on appeal in 2002.

Viagra (sildenafil citrate) Information

                             FDA ALERT [7/2005]

A small number of men have lost eyesight in one eye some time after taking Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra. This type of vision loss is called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). NAION causes a sudden loss of eyesight because blood flow is blocked to the optic nerve.

We do not know at this time if Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra causes NAION. NAION also happens in men who do not take these medicines.

People who have a higher chance for NAION include those who:

have heart disease

over 50 years old

have diabetes

have high blood pressure

have high cholesterol

smoke

have certain eye problems

FDA has approved new labels for Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra to include information on possible eyesight loss (NAION).

Stop using Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra if you have a loss in your eyesight. Get medical help right away.

Doctor Q&A

What is VIAGRA?
VIAGRA is a prescription medicine for erectile dysfunction. It improves the ability to get and maintain an erection for men with ED. VIAGRA is the #1 prescribed ED tablet.

How does VIAGRA work?
VIAGRA increases blood flow to the penis. If you have ED, this can help you get an erection and maintain it during sex. VIAGRA only works when you are sexually aroused. After sex, your erection will go away.

Will VIAGRA work for me?
VIAGRA has been shown to work for most men with ED. In clinical studies, 8 out of 10 men with ED improved their erections with the highest dose of VIAGRA, which is 100 mg. Only 2 out of 10 men taking a sugar pill improved their erections. Odds are, VIAGRA will also work for you. The best way to find out is to talk with your doctor. And ask if VIAGRA is right for you.

Doctor Q&A

What causes ED?
Erectile dysfunction can be caused by things like stress or fatigue. But more often it’s due to another health problem. These health problems may prevent your blood vessels and nerves from working properly. And this can prevent an erection.

Diabetes and high blood pressure are 2 common medical problems that can lead to ED. Others include high cholesterol, heart disease, depression, and prostate problems. Certain medications you take could also affect the quality of your erections. No matter what the cause, treatment can be effective.

How do I know if I have ED?
If you have had any problems getting or keeping an erection, you may have ED. Don’t worry. It happens to more men than you would think. A recent study found that half of all men over 40 have ED to some degree. To find out if you have signs of ED, take the sexual health quiz on this site. And discuss the results with your doctor. If appropriate, he can recommend a treatment that’s right for you.

What can I do about it?
Erectile dysfunction can be safely and effectively treated. Oral ED medications like VIAGRA are the most common form of ED treatment. So talk to your doctor. Chances are, you can improve your erections. And this can lead to a more satisfying sexual relationship with your partner.

Last 2 are obviously easier on Indian tongue! I'd been mentally spelling
it "Sai-ril".

Last time I checked the price of Moser Baer 10-pack (little over a year
back), it was selling for about Rs 350, compared to may be Rs 22 per
piece loose. And few shops actually stocked 10-packs, while loose is at
every street corner.

Last batch I brought loose was at Rs 20 a piece about 3 weeks back. May
be I need to check the latest 10-pack price. Thanks for 120 tip.

PS: MB seems to have at least two types of DVD-Rs widely available -
with differently styled markings on the side. Shop owners don't seem to
distinguish. I've not had trouble with either.

:) I hope you aren't pronouncing my name Sai-ril.

It's pronounced Si (like in spanish) Ril

Si-ril

:) Heh... I've been called Cyril, Sai-ril, Suril, Sunil, Sushil by a
lot of people. I guess people haven't heard this sound very often, and
the brain just doesn't register it.

Cheers!

Well, I got the 10-pack for 120 Rs. How much cheaper is it in Mumbai?

I sent the remaining 7 DVDs to the seller, asked him for a replacement
and when threatened with never buying from his shop again he gave me a
10 pack of Writex DVD-Rs which worked wonderfully.

Maybe something is wrong with the DVDs he gave me... Wrong batch?

Cyrus - you must have got unlucky. I've been using Moser Baer regularly
without trouble.

PS: At least in Bombay, I find buying DVDs lose is cheaper than buying
10-packs. I too buy in units of 10, but buying them lose saves some
money. Is the equation reversed in Delhi?

Last week's issue of the Economist has this to say in the same context:
"Administration makes moving atoms very expensive in India compared to
moving bytes."

PS: It's not an exact quote - I don't have this issue with me right now.
Something to this effect.
