Hi all,

Read this news:

Scientists Say Alien Moons More Likely to Bear Life Than Planets

Hmm, so if you had a bunch of fertile moons orbiting a single large planet, then you could have a civilization emerging on at least one of them, and then spreading to the other adjacent moons to become a civilizational cluster.

What an interesting idea!

I can imagine this leading to an India-like situation, where you had these multiple feuding moons, which while being distinct from each other, nevertheless had more in common by being part of a common cluster.

This gives me a science fiction story idea...

I think it is SF. But since story doesnt use future elements, HiTech and other common elements of SF, so someone can hardly be accept it as SF

Dr. Dubey Ji,
'Platinum Ki Khoj' is the second book of 'Professor' series. First one is 'Taboot'. So before it the serial publication of 'Taboot' is better.

Your marking of mere 2.5 stars is not consonant with the praise you have heaped (like many other critics of newspapers have too).  But, yes, I shall be watching it too.  I am, however not sure if theatres have arranged viewing aids to enable us to enjoy 3-D effects.

Dear All,
I saw movie Avatar yesternight and thoroughly enjoyed it for its superb imagery and animation work and also for an amazing blend of mythological scenes and imagined future technologies .Film has all the components of science fiction and fantasy- 3D virtual realities, cyborgs,
,recombinant DNA technique ,an alien atmosphere etc etc.
Its an off date encounter story with invaders of planet earth on Pandora -an imagined planet in another solar system.Asimov raised a pertinent question that why new alien civilization should necessarily fight when they meet inadvertently or deliberately -ant they be just friends ! But Avatar is just opposite to this promise and presents a colonial attitude of representatives of already threatened and dilapidated Earth when they wish to mine out some minerals from Pandora by killing the innocent inhabitants of the planet -what ensues is a colossal fight in invaders from earth is ultimately defeated and audience rejoice this retreat ,quite interestingly.

In my assessment it could be awarded 2.5 stars out of 5 and is recommended for its superb imagery and animation art.

How many instances can you cite from human history where contact between
previously unknown people was peaceful? How often has the contact of
India with external world during the last 1000 years been peaceful? I'm
currently partway through Clarke & Pohl's "The Last Theorem" & at one
place it describes in gory details the way Portuguese looted & raged one
of the ancient temples in Trincomalee, Lanka; we've thousands of similar
examples in India.

OK - there was a Gautam Buddha. May be a few others. But gory violence &
looting has been all too common during human first contact.

I was amused by the name of the mineral in your post - "unobtainium"!
This is often used in sf criticism, but rarely in a work of fiction.

I was amused by the name of the mineral in your post - "unobtainium"!
This is often used in sf criticism, but rarely in a work of fiction.

Dear All,
I saw movie Avatar yesternight and thoroughly enjoyed it for its superb imagery
and animation work and also for an amazing blend of mythological scenes and
imagined future technologies .Film has all the components of science fiction and
fantasy- 3D virtual realities,cyborgs,
,recombinant DNA technique ,an alien atmosphere etc etc.
Its an off date encounter story with invaders of planet earth on Pandora -an
imagined planet in another solar system.Asimov raised a pertinent question that
why new alien civilization should necessarily fight when they meet
inadvertently or deliberately -ant they be just friends ! But Avatar is just
opposite to this promise and presents a colonial attitude of representatives of
already threatened and dilapidated Earth when they wish to mine out some
minerals from Pandora by killing the innocent inhabitants of the planet -what
ensues is a colossal fight in invaders from earth is ultimately defeated and
audience rejoice this retreat ,quite interestingly.

In my assessment it could be awarded 2.5 stars out of 5 and is recommended for
its superb imagery and animation art.

Subject: New "fan made" trailer for FIRST WORLD
To:

Greetings:

I am pleased to present to you a new "fan made" trailer for First World.

As many of you know, the science fiction fan community is substantial, worldwide and extremely involved in their interest in the genre.  Several weeks ago, I contacted a group of fans that have been dedicated to the 1970's cult classic Space 1999 to see if there would be an interest in creating a new fan made trailer for First World.  To say they were enthusiastic about First World would be an understatement.  After providing them with the feature length script, they came up with the following:

The result of this effort could not be more exciting for the First World project.  Without any guidance from me, they captured the feature length version of First World. With the distribution channels for independent and traditional "studio" films changing by the season, I believe it is important for any project to develop a grassroots "fan" following as soon as possible.

With newly created concept art, the feature length script received its third honor in a film festival, placing top ten at Fantastic Planet Film Festival in Australia.  Here is a recent article "down under" by sci-fi convention organizer Robert Hood http://roberthood.net/blog/index.php/2009/11/11/first-world-new-designs-on-the-future/.

While the quest continues to secure funding to produce the feature length version, all these efforts will eventually lead to a positive conclusion.

I hope you enjoy this new fan made trailer.

Thank you for reading and for your continued interest in First World.

Sincerely,

Mark

The article is very good retracing the works of science fiction with regard to
technology. But is sci-fi is about technology of future alone? It is about
future biology, space science and earth sciences as well.

To me the science fiction authors have not run out of steam. How many
chances/platforms we have in bringing out our science fictions. it takes a very
long time before a single story published in India.

We have all the steam just give us a perennial outlet to let the steam out.

Mishraji i am not questioning the existence of Indian SF . it is very much alive
and kicking! But kindly take note of the suggestions made by me for better reach
of the indian SF in the world.

As for indian SF i am also in the same boat as urs. Naturally i would take
utmost care to see it sailing through smoothly.

I hope u will agree that we need to create more opportunities to ourselves.

Mohan ,please do not get maudlin and just google out it -Indian science fiction !And you shall face the truth -any one who is saying that there is no Indian sf -he is not aware of the fact or concealing the fact owing to
some unknown reason or may be due to sheer ignorance or arrogance.

2009/11/8 sundaraselvan <sundaraselvan@...>

Dont even for a moment think i am going to degrade indian science fiction. I am putting up this after coming across an interview by an English writer that there seems to be no indian science fiction. After reading that i was absolutely shocked.

Why such an impression? It is purely becas we write in various vernacular languages and no effort has been made to get them translated into English. When everything is put in English the world will notice us.

At the same time, i want to stress that our science fiction should be worthy of taking it to the world level. There fore one should set himself high standards for himself/herself in writing science fictions.

There fore if we are to make an impact on the World science fiction arena, what i have suggested above have to be put into action rather than talking.

Of late , i dont find much discussion here. Cheer up science buffs! have ur say on such burning topics.

K.Mohan(Mohan Sanjeevan)
