Dear PC,
I was a total newbie to Linux till I decided to shift permanently to the
same(about a month back). I was sick and tired of Windows and its spyware and
viruses etc.
Anyway, you need not know much about the Linux to install. I was a total newbie
to the same.
Here is what I did and for the benefit of the same, I am mailing this to
everyone on the list:
The Feb issue of Digit carried out .iso files of Mandrake Linux 10.1 Copy it on
the hard drive, burn it as iso image file(I used Nero) and thats it.
Make sure that your first boot device is CD-ROM. To enable thins, when you
restart your computer, press del. Go to boot options and select CD Rom. It is as
simple as that. Usually it is on that way by default.
Linux can recognise any kind of architecture of the chip and gives generic
support to a multitude of mother boards etc. Hence you need not worry.
Thats it. You are ready to install Mandrake Linux!
I suggest that you have a look at the Live Linux Cds first.Among the best are
Knoppix and Ubuntu Linux.(Knoppix with this months Digit DVD).
That way you dont need to install anything. The whole Linux runs from CD ROM
when you restart the system. Assuming that you are having Windows.
Google and Teoma are your best friends to search for information
You dont need to join any coaching class for anything. Assuming you have an
internet connection, it would be easier to have a look at the screenshots of the
various "flavours of linux" also called as Distros.
The only problem at times is the Sound card recognition and the Ethernet port.
If you are lucky, it would be recognised. If not, well, once you get used to the
command line interface(just like DOS) then perhaps it would be easier to
configure. In mandrake everything is GUI. Just like Windows.
There are various desktops for Linux. The best one is KDE(I am ont that one).
The others are Gnome. In Ubuntu, the default is Gnome.
U can download Ubuntu as bittorrent file. That makes the things much easier.
PLus well, the mailing list is there. For any problem I suggest that you mail to
us all. There would be some way we could help you out. Kick Windows and welcome
to Linux. Once you get the hang of it, you would realise there is a lot that can
be done. Changing the desktop to setting up servers, everything is possible.
Welcome to the new World!
Regards
Dr Abhishek Puri
P.S. If anyone needs Mandrake CDs please ask! I d be glad to courier the same to
you!
