Dear Akshay,
Of course Rhagav Jha is right that it is best to
make a serious upgrade in your system,
but in case that is not convenient at this time:
1) You can install and run Debian in text
mode on your machine without upgrading.
You will need more memory in order to run a
graphical interface in Debian.
You may be able to run
some other distros in text only on your
system as it is, but I think Debian is
best if you can't upgrade. Debian will
also run almost all current Linux software
in graphical mode, so you will find it fully
up-to-date when you upgrade your memory or
whole computer.
2) I have run Redhat 9.0 with a 200 Mhz processor
and 128 MB RAM in full graphical mode. It was
not fast, but adequate for internet, Open Office,
and learning administration of servers.
It was not fast enough for all applications.
Way too slow for Kino (video) or GIMP
(graphics).
3) There is an early Linux graphical system called
FVWM which has very low memory requirements.
I know that it is packaged with SuSE linux
9.0,9.1,9.2. It may run under Redhat as well.
I do not know.
So those are my suggestions if you can not upgrade
properly. You can learn much linux on your machine.
Some people feel that Linux shines especially on
slow machines, especially Debian!
Hope this helps,
Jonathan Davidson
P.S.If I am corrected by someone more expert, that is
no problem, but I have played with SuSE and RedHat
on old and new machines a lot for 18 months.
Debian a little.
