May come in useful for someone some day!

I needed to use the microphone and the recording volume was very low.
I had turned the mic and the capture controls to the maximum.

Gnome Volume Control by default does not show all the options in
alsamixer. Anyway, playing around (pseudo-randomly) with kmix and
alsamixer, I found that if one turns Mono on, the recording volume was
much better. This, though, turns the Mic off. So, it is very confusing
but worked with my sound card. (Nvidia chipset on a Asus board for
AMD)

If anyone can shed light on the difference between Mic and Mono, please...
