Hi!!

progaming how i start to kernal programing any book

For kernel in-depths : Understanding the Linux Kernel by Cesati and Bovet. (This
is about 2.4 tree, book about
2.6 series will be soon on the stands).

Device Drivers: Linux Device Driver by Rubini & Corbet (wonderful book, again
for 2.4 series)

Linux kernel Internal, Linux core commentary, Linux kernel development by Robert
Love. THere are so
many of them.
I personally own first two and Linux kernel development by Robert Love and found
very nice.

If you don't have any prior experience with Unix programning I would suggest
that you first go for "Advanced Programming in Unix environment". This is from
personal experience. There are so many good things (practices if not skills)
that help alot while programming into kernel. This book is one which will
give something implicitly that ESR discusses about explicitly in his book "The
Art of Unix Programming".
A must read, both of them.

Wish you happy kernel hacking. & one more thing... Welcome. :-)

Regards
--Himanshu

P.S.: Join some mailing list like one of kernelnewbies. Its help ful. TLDP is
also wonderful place to be.

I am writing this in case anyone just gave my query about the swapping of hda11 with hda10 on my system.
  Well the problem was in the partition table (Due to cfdisk ?)the LBA values of the partitions were correct and thus the problem was solved by changing the CHS values with the LBA ones.

Hi Jon
My mistake...the command is
"tar -zxvf"
that is space after tar..
-zxvf are options/parameters.
i'll exlpain them..
z is to uncompress the file ie to change the .tar.gz --> .tar (this
happens in the temp folder)
x is to expand the file into folders and files...
v is for verbose output
f is to force in case of any problem

detailed help for any command can be obtained by using

man <commandname>
e.g.
man tar

Hitesh Gupta

Hi!

I was also prompted to say same thing that Hitesh already did.
But with very well said about posting by Hitesh, I dont need to
do so.

As per your question,
For any "general purpose" C program, "By general purpose, I mean
the program that links to standard C library", you can do following
with GCC.

gcc <filename.c> -o <out-filename>

* <filename.c> is your C source file
* out-filename is your executable file.
If you miss -o <out-filename>, executable will be "a.out" as hitesh
already said.

Hi there..
Before I write the solution to your problem, please note a few points.

  Its better to start your own thread rather than starting from middle
of some other threads.

Also its advisable to give the thread a suitable subject title (such
as "How to compile a C program?" rather than a more general "Help"

  Normally on a LUG one does not ask a particular person a problem but
rather submits it to the whole group . Looking at your mail..only
himanshu should be replying to it..but anyways here i am..
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Solution

Suppose your file name is "abc.c"

then give command: "cc abc.c"

if no error is found then a file "a.out" will be created in the directory..
to execute it simly give the command: "./a.out"

That it..

<BR>
<BR>
[Commercial]<BR>
<BR>
Dear Linux enthusiasts,<BR>
<BR>
LINUXForYou: The Complete Magazine on Open Source.<BR>
LINUXForYou's November issue is now on stands, it has a<BR>
lot of content which the community would like to get their<BR>
hands on. <BR>
<BR>
November's Focus<BR>
LINUXForYou: Michael Tiemann, VP, Open Source Affairs, Red<BR>
Hat, shares his vision, enthusiasm and entrepreneurial<BR>
spirits with LFY readers.<BR>
LINUXForYouPRO: Fine-tune your video cards.<BR>
<BR>
Other highlights of the November issue includes:<BR>
----------------------------------------------------------<BR>
LFY CD #1<BR>
<BR>
CD #1 is bundled with the following software<BR>
* SmoothWall: This is an Internet security software package<BR>
based on Linux. It is Web managed and has the facilities<BR>
normally seen in expensive commercial offerings.<BR>
<BR>
* Damn Small inux: This is a business card sized, bootable<BR>
LiveCD distribution.<BR>
<BR>
<BR>
LFY CD #2<BR>
<BR>
MEPIS: MEPIS is a LiveCD distribution. It is an ideal<BR>
foundation for developing a custom version of Linux for<BR>
large scale deployment. It is ideal for integrators and<BR>
end-user clients to develop privately branded and<BR>
optimally tweaked Linux configurations.<BR>
<BR>
LINUX For You<BR>
--------------------<BR>
Articles in detail<BR>
<BR>
* Are You Ready to Rock? is the theme of this interview<BR>
with Michael Tiemann, VP, Open Source Affairs, Red Hat.<BR>
Tiemann has shared his thoughts and vision that all of us<BR>
can learn from. He has addressed the concerns of the CEOs<BR>
of Indian IT firms who are wondering if it's time to shift<BR>
to the open source paradigm. He has also explained why<BR>
CIOs would be at an advantage if they deploy open source.<BR>
He has also expressed his willingness to partner with<BR>
governments to demonstrate the benefits of open source.<BR>
<BR>
* With the battle raging between the open source community<BR>
and the proprietary world on one front, there are lots of<BR>
arguments to be settled between free software against open<BR>
source software. Licensing is the key behind these<BR>
arguments. So the article titled "Licensing Open Source<BR>
Software" just do this.<BR>
<BR>
* The cute little penguin has made an entry in the<BR>
electronic design automation industry. So, if you are a<BR>
part of electronics industry and are looking for ideas on<BR>
cutting costs the article titled "Tux Automates Electronic<BR>
Design" is for you.<BR>
<BR>
<BR>
LINUX For You PRO<BR>
-------------------------<BR>
Articles in detail<BR>
<BR>
* Troubleshooting Video: This article describes how to<BR>
configure, troubleshoot and fine-tune the performance of<BR>
video cards in Fedora.<BR>
<BR>
* If you have a Web server in Linux and want to secure the<BR>
acess from browser clients to the Web server, Hyper Text<BR>
Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is one of the solutions.<BR>
We have an article fully devoted to HTTPS as it's widely<BR>
used in e-commerce.<BR>
<BR>
* Review: Firefox Browser: In this article, Firefox browser<BR>
has been reviewed in detail. <BR>
<BR>
<BR>
Why do we have two versions of Linux For You now?<BR>
------------------------------------------------------------------<BR>
Linux For You was conceived with the aim of pushing Linux<BR>
from labs to offices. To achieve this goal, we realised<BR>
that we needed to reduce the pricing of the main magazine<BR>
so that those who were not technical but curious about<BR>
Linux/OSS could access the information. Hence,<BR>
LINUXForYou's main magazine was created as a magazine for<BR>
everyone to read.<BR>
<BR>
At the same time, the demand from the tech community was<BR>
clear -- they needed technical content along with CDs that<BR>
bundled the latest software and distros. Hence, the<BR>
combined pack of LINUXForYou and LFYPRO and the two CDs is<BR>
now available at Rs 100!<BR>
<BR>
For more details about LINUX For You magazine, log on to<BR>
www.lfymag.com or email at niraj@....<BR>
<BR>
This communication aims to inform the Linux community<BR>
about the information contained in Asia's only magazine on<BR>
Linux and open source, and we hope that it will be taken<BR>
positively.<BR>

Hey Friends i need a lil help (for knowing what's happening)

     I partioned my hardisk into 8 partitions out of which only first (Fat32) is primary and Rest are logical.They in increasing order of start sectors are -

           {fat32},{ext3,ext2,fat32,swap,ext2,ext2,fat32}

Now their sizes (In MB's) are -
  {3676.71},{4301.83,4301.83,8603.65,271.44,945.91,937.69,17018.11}

     Now the problem is that when i am running gnoppix 0.8 (based on debian (kernel 2.6.7)) the last 2 partitions are interchanged (hda11 becomes hda10 and vise-versa [acc to what qtparted says]). ie they come in order -
           {fat32},{ext3,ext2,fat32,swap,ext2,fat32,ext2}

     I suspect the problem would also be with most (or all) distributions.

I am including the partition table for my hardisk followed by the cfdisk's output.

Well i believe you you downloaded one of the source code files..
if the file you downloaded isnt "dvtitler-0.1.1.tar.gz" than do this:
Download the above file from
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/dvtitler/dvtitler-0.1.1.tar.gz?download

untar it using command
tar-zxvf dvtitler-0.1.1.tar.gz
cd to the new folder thus created and type
./install.sh
it the error is displayed that file is not executable..then give command
chmod 711 dvtitler-0.1.1.tar.gz
./install.sh
this should do it

Get back in case you still face problem
Bye

Greetings,
    I am new to computers, having purchased my first computer
4 months ago at the age of 43. I have downloaded and installed
a video editing program "kino" in RPM form. It works well.
However it needs a plugin "dvtitler" to add movie titles to
a completed video. I have not found dvtitler in RPM form.
I downloaded the source code, but have only managed to
compile it halfway before giving up last summer. It would
be wonderful if someone can direct me to a dvtitler RPM
or help otherwise. I am using SuSE Linux 9.1, AMD 2500,
ASUS A7V600X motherboard.
                  Gratefully and hopefully,

Note in some cases (like me with knoppix 3.2) you have to supply type too
ie. the same example (if in fat) will look like
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/c

For more info for valid types
Use
'man -k' on your distribution

mount <devicename> <mountpoint> should do it.
eg: mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/c

the ntfs module is usually not included in standard
kernels distributed by most (all ??) distros so ntfs
patitions cannot be mounted. OP will have to recompile
the kernel to include support for ntfs.

Hi Vipin
This is what you need to do..
first of all note down the disk parttion by using fdisk (these should
be of the format \hda\..)
next create a mount point (preferably in /mnt). a mount point is
nothing but just a directory
next edit the \etc\fstab file so as to reflect the new partitions.
fstab setting can be found in the help file..
Hope it should solve the problem..

But i am not sure if NTFS formatted partitions are mounted..
Write back in case you face difficulty
