Recipe for a Successful Linux User Group
by Rick Moen

See the full essay online ****** Really good. -FN

1. You need a Web page.
2. Your Web page needs a reasonable URL.
3. You need a regular meeting location.
4. You need a regular meeting time.
5. You need to avoid meeting-time conflicts.
6. You need to make sure that meetings happen as advertised, without fail.
7. You need a core of several Linux enthusiasts.
8. Your core volunteers need out-of-band methods of communication.
9. You need to get on the main lists of LUGs, and keep your entries accurate.
      *  http://www.ssc.com/glue/
      * http://lugww.counter.li.org/
      * http://nlug.org/webring/

10. You must have login access to maintain your Web pages, as needed.
11. Design your Web page to be forgiving of deferred maintenance.
12. Always include the day of the week, when you cite event dates. Always check
that day of the week, first, using gcal [2] (or cal). gcal is your friend.
13. Place time-sensitive and key information prominently near the top of your
main Web page.
14. Include maps and directions to your events.
15. Emphasise on your main page that your meeting will be free of charge and
open to the public (if it is).
16. You'll want to include an RSVP "mailto" hyperlink, on some events.
17. Use referral pages.
18. Make sure every page has a revision date and maintainer link.
19. Check all links, at intervals.
20. You may want to consider establishing a LUG mailing list.
21. You don't need to be in the Internet Service Provider business.
22. Don't go into any other business, either.
23. Walk the walk.

LUG checklist.

The following checklist may be useful for your group, once established.

1. Web page:

a. Meetings:
[ ] Current meeting info? Is it prominent?
[ ] Day of the week? Beginning time? Ending time?
[ ] Double-checked day/date matches against a calendar?
(E.g., is the "Friday, March 28" you listed an error, because the 28th is a
Thursday?)
[ ] Location?
[ ] Map?
[ ] Directions (car, public transit)? Parking tips?
[ ] Information on the next several meetings?
[ ] RSVP mailto link on meetings where this is needed?
[ ] Note that meetings are free and open to the public (if they are)?
[ ] If there's a special fee, is it disclosed next to the event listing?
[ ] If location / time / date formula has changed recently, is this noted
prominently?
[ ] Have you checked for event conflicts with other nearby groups, or with
holidays?

b. General:
[ ] Includes event date-formulas (e.g., 4th Tuesdays)? Prominently?
[ ] Maintainer mailto link?
[ ] Last-revised date?

c. Periodically (maybe every quarter):
[ ] Checked all links on your site for dead links?
[ ] Checked your Web server's logs for pages requested but not found? (You'll
want to put a referral page at that URL.)
[ ] Read all your Web content attentively for outdated content?

2. Other, periodical:
[ ] Reviewed/updated all LUG lists that have entries concerning your group?
[ ] Reviewed all sites that link to yours? Advised their webmasters of needed
corrections?

Last revised: 2003-08-04

Having seen (and run) quite a few Linux user groups (LUGs), and observed some
thrive and others die, I can hazard some firm recommendations. If you're
thinking of starting a LUG, or are running one now, please ponder these
lessons, drawn from other LUGs' experience. In fact, please consider reviewing
this list from time to time, as a kind of checklist.

Issue 1 Volume 1 of this new magazine has just hit the (cyber)stands. And,
don't be too surprised, you're free to download a copy too of this 78-page
publication. Some of the articles in the first issue:

o File formats; format wars (Marco Fioretti)
File formats: the past, the present, a possible future

o XML: The answer to everything? (Kay Ethier, Scott Abel)
This article weighs the pros and cons of XML for some
applciations (publishing) and explores why it is the
best possible solution for many programming and
     	   publishing needs.

o Free file formats and the future of intellectual
       	   freedom (Terry Hancock)
Information as property may be served by closed
file formats, but the freedom of information
     	   requires free formats.

o Creating the Free Software Magazine (Tony Mobily)
A long path that takes us to the very beginning
     	   of this project.

o Mac OS X: Welcome to the jungle -- a look inside the
Mac OS X software ecology (Chris J Karr)

o The magic of live CDs (Harish Pillay)
What are live CDs, and how do they work?

o Every engineer's checklist for justifying
Free Software. It's not just about 'no licence fees'
     	   (Malcolm D Spence)

o Smarter password management (John Locke)
How to handle your passwords without getting lost

o The content tail wags the IT dog (Daniel James)
Without hardware and software, there would be
nothing for digital media to be created on, or used
with. And yet the content industry attempts to tell
the far larger IT industry what it can and cannot do.

o Motivation and value of free resources. Wikipedia
and Planetmath show the way (Aaron E Klemm)

o It's all about freedom (Christian Einfeldt)
Freedom is free software's competitive advantage.

o The Commons (Dave M Berry)
The Commons as an Idea -- Ideas as a Commons

o Let's not forget our roots (Free Software is not
just about cost or stability; it's a movement that
mustn't forget the principles which made it possible)
     	   Tom Chance.

    Dear Linux enthusiasts,

LINUX For You: The Complete Magazine on Open Source.
LINUX For You's January issue is now on stands, it has a lot of
    content which the
community would like to get their hands on.

PRESENTING THE NEW IMPROVED 'LINUX For You'

*There is a complete guide for Newbies titled 'Newbies guide'. As
    explained by the name
the series will take newbies step-by-step through the experience of
    working and playing
    with Linux.

*There is also a dedicated series with the coolest macros available
    for OpenOffice and
    how you can use them.

*International cartoonist Javier Malonda has agreed to share his works
    with us with the
hope of making even the most serious techie smile.

*Now, also read some of the best articles from Linux Journal.

    January's Focus
    ---------------

    LINUX For You: Newbies Special
LINUX For You PRO: Real Time Fun With Joysticks

Other highlights of the January issue includes:
    ------------------------------------------------
    LFY CD #1

This CD has a versatile collection of software of every type--to
    enhance your desktop,
programming, security and Linux skills. Some of them are Quasar,
    Stellarium,
    WebCalendar, and Webmin.

    LFY CD #2

Now you can enhance your desktop with speedy Linux distro called YOPER.

Why do we have two versions of Linux For You now?
    -------------------------------------------------
Linux For You was conceived with the aim of pushing Linux from labs to
    offices. To
achieve this goal, we realised that we needed to reduce the pricing of
    the main magazine
so that those who were not technical but curious about Linux/OSS could
    access the
information. Hence, LINUX For You's main magazine was created as a
    magazine for everyone
    to read.

At the same time, the demand from the tech community was clear -- they
    needed technical
content along with CDs that bundled the latest software and distros.
    Hence, the combined
pack of LINUX For You and LFY PRO and 2 CDs are now available at Rs 100!

For more details about LINUX For You magazine, log on to
    www.linuxforu.com or email at
    niraj@....

This communication aims to inform the Linux community about the
    information contained in
Asia's only magazine on Linux and open source, and we hope that it
    will be taken
    positively.

    Thanks for replying Hitesh,
The prob wasnt making an iso but thanks anyway. The solution on Digit was RHat specific (i think so unless i change initrd and others).I think i found the result it was on Debian's manual -<http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch-install-methods.en.html#s-boot-drive-files>

PS: i got the debian DVD(with 6100+ packages) with PC Quest magazine this December. i Think 'linux for u' had Fudora core 3 this time (i'll be having it next very soon)

hi sorry for replying this late but my exams were going on..
anyway what you want is possible provided you have a lot of free disk
space...above 8 gb...4.3 for image of the DVD and rest for installation...
To create a iso image of DVD
    dd if=/dev/dvd of=dvd.iso <if your current OS is linux>
    check this link
    http://people.etango.com/~awaite/blog/archives/000653.html

if you are on windows use any available software for iso image
creation. copy this image to your hard disk...

now visit this link to know install using this image..
    http://thinkdigit.com/howto.html

since i havent done it myself so i wont be able to elaborate but still
you can always ask in case of any problem..

BTW is that core 3 DVD final release or some beta

    Hello friends,
I am just writing this in case anyone knows how to boot a media from hard-drive which was actually in a CD or a DVD drive. I am asking this because i do not own a dvd but have a Debian DVD and need to install it, My friend has a DVD drive but if i install on His computer (to my HDD) i think it won't boot (The operating system) (PS: i have already tried this with a Knoppix 3.6 disk , i can get to the lilo but the kernal  halts abnormally if i install knoppix with his computer onto my HDD and then boot from my comp.)
i think there should be way to make an image off the disk and then boot the image from 'a' bootloader. But i do not know any bootloader that supports booting from an image of a DISK.

If anyone can tell me ANYTHING related to this ,please help me.

PS: i wrote this in a hurry so it may contain many gramatical errors

    Thank you for reading this,

This is to announce that LINUX For You is coming up with FedoraCore 3
DVD with the December 2004 issue. Worth of the LFY Pack remains the
same i.e. Rs 100! As FedoraCore 3 required 4 CDs, so LFY took this
risky decision and has put FedoraCore 3 on a DVD for its readers.

progaming how i start to kernal programing any book

For kernel in-depths : Understanding the Linux Kernel by Cesati and Bovet. (This
is about 2.4 tree, book about
2.6 series will be soon on the stands).

Device Drivers: Linux Device Driver by Rubini & Corbet (wonderful book, again
    for 2.4 series)

Linux kernel Internal, Linux core commentary, Linux kernel development by Robert
    Love. THere are so
    many of them.
I personally own first two and Linux kernel development by Robert Love and found
    very nice.

If you don't have any prior experience with Unix programning I would suggest
that you first go for "Advanced Programming in Unix environment". This is from
personal experience. There are so many good things (practices if not skills)
that help alot while programming into kernel. This book is one which will
give something implicitly that ESR discusses about explicitly in his book "The
    Art of Unix Programming".
A must read, both of them.

Wish you happy kernel hacking. & one more thing... Welcome. :-)

    Regards
    --Himanshu

P.S.: Join some mailing list like one of kernelnewbies. Its help ful. TLDP is
    also wonderful place to be.

I am writing this in case anyone just gave my query about the swapping of hda11 with hda10 on my system.
Well the problem was in the partition table (Due to cfdisk ?)the LBA values of the partitions were correct and thus the problem was solved by changing the CHS values with the LBA ones.

    Hi Jon
    My mistake...the command is
    "tar -zxvf"
    that is space after tar..
    -zxvf are options/parameters.
    i'll exlpain them..
z is to uncompress the file ie to change the .tar.gz --> .tar (this
    happens in the temp folder)
x is to expand the file into folders and files...
    v is for verbose output
f is to force in case of any problem

detailed help for any command can be obtained by using

    man <commandname>
    e.g.
    man tar

    regards

    Hi!

I was also prompted to say same thing that Hitesh already did.
But with very well said about posting by Hitesh, I dont need to
    do so.

    As per your question,
For any "general purpose" C program, "By general purpose, I mean
the program that links to standard C library", you can do following
    with GCC.

    gcc <filename.c> -o <out-filename>

    * <filename.c> is your C source file
    * out-filename is your executable file.
If you miss -o <out-filename>, executable will be "a.out" as hitesh
    already said.

    Regards

    Hi there..
Before I write the solution to your problem, please note a few points.

Its better to start your own thread rather than starting from middle
    of some other threads.

Also its advisable to give the thread a suitable subject title (such
as "How to compile a C program?" rather than a more general "Help"

Normally on a LUG one does not ask a particular person a problem but
rather submits it to the whole group . Looking at your mail..only
himanshu should be replying to it..but anyways here i am..
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Solution

Suppose your file name is "abc.c"

    then give command: "cc abc.c"

if no error is found then a file "a.out" will be created in the directory..
to execute it simly give the command: "./a.out"

    That it..

    <BR>
Why do we have two versions of Linux For You now?<BR>
    ------------------------------------------------------------------<BR>
Linux For You was conceived with the aim of pushing Linux<BR>
from labs to offices. To achieve this goal, we realised<BR>
that we needed to reduce the pricing of the main magazine<BR>
so that those who were not technical but curious about<BR>
Linux/OSS could access the information. Hence,<BR>
LINUXForYou's main magazine was created as a magazine for<BR>
    everyone to read.<BR>
    <BR>
At the same time, the demand from the tech community was<BR>
clear -- they needed technical content along with CDs that<BR>
bundled the latest software and distros. Hence, the<BR>
combined pack of LINUXForYou and LFYPRO and the two CDs is<BR>
    now available at Rs 100!<BR>

Why do we have two versions of Linux For You now?
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
Linux For You was conceived with the aim of pushing Linux
from labs to offices. To achieve this goal, we realised
that we needed to reduce the pricing of the main magazine
so that those who were not technical but curious about
Linux/OSS could access the information. Hence,
LINUXForYou's main magazine was created as a magazine for
    everyone to read.

At the same time, the demand from the tech community was
clear -- they needed technical content along with CDs that
bundled the latest software and distros. Hence, the
combined pack of LINUXForYou and LFYPRO and the two CDs is
    now available at Rs 100!

For more details about LINUX For You magazine, log on to
    www.lfymag.com or email at niraj@....

This communication aims to inform the Linux community
about the information contained in Asia's only magazine on
Linux and open source, and we hope that it will be taken
    positively.

Hey Friends i need a lil help (for knowing what's happening)

I partioned my hardisk into 8 partitions out of which only first (Fat32) is primary and Rest are logical. They in increasing order of start sectors are -

               {fat32},{ext3,ext2,fat32,swap,ext2,ext2,fat32}

Now their sizes (In MB's) are -
      {3676.71},{4301.83,4301.83,8603.65,271.44,945.91,937.69,17018.11}

Now the problem is that when i am running gnoppix 0.8 (based on debian (kernel 2.6.7)) the last 2 partitions are interchanged (hda11 becomes hda10 and vise-versa [acc to what qtparted says]). ie they come in order -
               {fat32},{ext3,ext2,fat32,swap,ext2,fat32,ext2}

I suspect the problem would also be with most (or all) distributions.

I am including the partition table for my hardisk followed by the cfdisk's output.

    Thanks anyway for reading this.
Copying this in a texteditor and then reading might help.
