Sorry about the premature amateur opinion.
Previously in SuSE 9.1 installed by highspeed
cable internet, only KINO ever crashed which
is expected due to being under development.
No other crashes in 1 year+ constant usage.

Now in 9.3 KBear ftp crashes. Also KDE panel crashes
sometimes. Installed from downloaded CDs.
Sorry about bad idea.

Hi,
Perhaps you would like an opinion from
a non-professional, although I might head in that
direction. I am now trying SuSE 9.3,( after using SuSE

9.1 for one year on my first computer), which is the
first SuSE available as free downloadable isos,
( 5 CDs). It is now easy
to hook up a digital camera,( USB ), instead of
nearly impossible. Some bad bugs, (SuSE 9.1), in GIMP
and KWord are fixed. Quanta+ is not found in 9.3,
but average users may not want that.

So:
1)SuSE available on CDs where it wasn't before.
2)Easier hardware installation for average users.
3)Smaller distro than 9.1, fewer redundant programs
   which might confuse average users.

The pro who started me on Linux says that it will
never catch on with average users until they can go
out and buy any old printer, camera, scanner, etc.
and bring it home and hook it up easily. Otherwise
he says that businesses will purchase Linux firewall
computers. American businesses won't go to Linux
unless they have Quickbooks equivalent.

Good luck from Nashville, Tennessee, USA,
Jonathan Davidson

Hi all,
I am here with a clear goal.
PROPAGATE LINUX AMONG NORMAL USERS.
I am a GEEK by nature and wud love to fo all geek
correspondence thru this mail. But from day one my aim
has been to highlight the importance of normal users
who make Windows more popular even if it is not good.
I have seen 3 websites coming up
a) By Davinder
b) By Navdeep, I was one who installed the PHPBB.
c) By our own moderator, Amrinder
So we have 3 persons who r willing to work but are
working in 3 directions. Am ready to help any one of
these. I found LinuxEra.com was doing good. Partially
due to the messages I send thru Yahoo! and partially
thru other members visiting site. 22 Members are
registered. many threads are open but no communication
is taking place.
I know we all r wrking professionals and cant committ
much of our time but I think an hour at weekend will b
more than enuff.
So wat I am asking is,
a) Lets zero in our website
b) then start wrking on it, not developing but wrking
means coordinating
c) lets meet sometime, first online and then offline.
lets make it unformal meet.
d) then benchmark a Linux distro which we will b
propagating. I suggest 2 distros one live and second
install. IMO Knoppix is the best Live distro.
I invite every one to comment on this.
Please do take ur time and comment

I apologise ... but not?

Surely it doesn't relate to open source? but the guys
running linux machines will surely appreciate this?
Because a very important program, developed in open
source community, runs this service all over the
world, and India is very late in getting run this on
its soil. This is BIND, which you have in all linux
CDs. This is the heart of Internet.

BIND is not too big program in terms of CD space, but
see how much effort, knowledge, dedication are
required to run (root) DNS servers? Related to this
(root) server, there are number programs - all in open
source. syslog as "central log server", time server,
various log analyser, protocol profiler, (my all time
favourite) mrtg and so on - all in open space? (I must
say there is no comparable of these in windows as and
how seamlessly, automatedly they are integrated in an
enterprise environment)

In all, DNS server relates to Enterprise Environment,
where linux/unix is put on the work. How many guys in
this group are using these facilities, may be
interesting. Isn't there are so small number of
questions/reply in this forum (in chandigarh). People
ask just about installation of Linux. Anybody pushing
Linux to the wall?

Another episode may be interesting (like DNS) to open
source community? I said about time server?
Officially, you know, there is no time server on the
soil of India? Does anybody bothered about TIME in his
environment YES/NO? Who is the TIME keeper in India,
officially? (NationalPhysicalLab?) Why TIME is so
important to many? How AIRTEL, SPICE, RIM, BSNL, VSNL
keeping time in their network? ---- There is again
open space program on your linux CD, ntpd. I will not
explain ntpd, this is huge story only written on open
space. Ask any mailserver, DNS, administrator, or some
forensic expert (IT2000 act) about the importance and
complexity of TIME. So it is awaited that we will have
(official) time server on India. It is due.

Those who have seen DNS server administration in
windows must read “DNS and BIND” from O'Reilly
Asociates. And see how open source community has
developed such a beautiful software. After all it
powers Internet. Microsoft is be-fooling many guys.

THREE INTERNET ROOT SERVERS INSTALLED AND INTEGRATED
---------------------------------------------------------------------

17:41 IST
The Department of Information Technology along with National
Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) has installed three Internet root
servers in the country at Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. All the three
Internet Root Servers were integrated at a function held here today
in the presence of Shri Dayanidhi Maran, Minister of Communications
& Information Technology, Mr. Paul Wilson, Director General-APNIC
and Mr. Axel Pawlik, MD, RIPE.

Speaking on the occasion Shri Dayanidhi Maran said that Internet has
pervaded into the length and breadth of the country and the nation
is proud to say that no part of it is unserved or uncovered by
Internet. "We have also established a state-of the-art Registry
which manages the country-code top level domain. We have reached a
stage of maturity in bandwidth infrastructure development both
domestic and international, and therefore, it was in the fitness of
things that we are today host to three Internet root servers", he
said. The Minister further said that these root servers are the
resolution for the traffic in the time of crisis. These servers will
ensure that the traffic crisis is resolved in such a manner that the
user will not be aware of the fact that there was a crisis. At the
time of crisis every route server will communicate with each other,
like the cell phone user whose phone gets connected from one tower
to another without the knowledge of the user, Shri Maran said.

The installation and operations is facilitated by Asia Pacific
Network Information center (APNIC) and National Internet Exchange of
India (NIXI). The STPI has provided all necessary infrastructure
support like equipment racks, providing an Internet connectivity,
air-conditioning etc. The F-Root server at Chennai is operational
from 7th August, 2005. The K-root server has been installed in Delhi
and is operational from 17th August, 2005. With the installation of
the I-root server in Mumbai today, the integration process is
complete.

The installation of Internet Root Servers in the country will help
in reducing the expensive international bandwidth load; increase the
Internet resiliency i.e. less dependency on root servers abroad; and
improve host name resolution (in some cases) from hundreds of
millisecond to under-ten millisecond.

Internet Root Servers are part of the Domain Name Systems (DNS), a
worldwide distributed database that is used to translate worldwide
unique domain names such as www.mit.gov.in to other identifiers. The
DNS is an important part of the Internet infrastructure. The root
domain name servers form a critical part of the global Internet
infrastructure.

Every computer connected to the Internet has its address, expressed
in the form of a number, such as 206.112.85.10. This address, known
as an IP (Internet Protocol) address is used to route packets of
data, allowing email, display of WebPages and other data to get to a
desired destination. Some of these addresses are assigned
permanently and some are assigned temporarily, but at any given
point of time, each computer connected to the Internet has a unique
IP address.

In order to translate these numerical IP addresses to human readable
names, domain name system (DNS) has been evolved which is
hierarchical in nature. It is divided into top level domains (TLDs),
with each TLD then being divided into second level and third level
domains. The top level domains historically included three letter
generic TLDs (gTLDs), such as '.org', '.com', '.net'.

The TLDs also include two-letter country code TLDs (ccTLDs), such
as '.in' representing India, '.br' (Brazil), '.nz' (New
Zealand), '.ca' (Canada) so on and so forth. Thus the Internet
mainly works through the registration and resolution of domain name.

APNIC is a not-for-profit, membership-based organisation in the in
the Asia Pacific Region which provides allocation and registration
services for IP address for supporting Internet globally. APNIC
facilitates the deployment of root servers in cooperation with the
official operators of these servers. APNIC's role in root server
operations is as a voluntary facilitator and coordinator of root
server deployments in Asia Pacific region. Presently, there are 13
root domain name servers operated by a very competent and trusted
group of volunteers. The existing Internet architecture is based on
these 13 root servers, designated A to M, distributed world wide for
efficient resolving of the roots in the domain names.

Dear Arminder,

If you scroll down a bit down you can see even I have posted there.
The thing is these guys have shown a complicated method to add
a secondary SATA drive when you already have a Linux installed
on PATA drive.

Ram from Chennai has also provided a similar solution at:
http://www.megalinux.net/archives/000413.html

What I am looking is for a SiS_SATA Controller drivers which
I can provide during the installation on a SATA drive so that
I can have only one HDD on the system.

Thanks & Regards

Mohit

Hello Amit,

That was quite close. Thanks for the help.
I had a old system running RHEL4 with PATA drive.
I was able to recompile the kernel with the new driver.
I was able to complie the .ko file, I copied the same to the floppy also
but it doesn't detect the driver from floppy when I provide it at the start
of
installation as you have told.

I even tried creating a image file that too doesn't work.

1. To make a driver disk is the .ko file enough or
we have to copy some other files also as in windows ?

2. The floppy shoul have what file system ?

3. Can you pls. let me know step-by-step that how I can make a driver
disk.

In the mean time I am trying to mount new SATA drive on the old system
on which I have compiled the driver for SATA. But the problem is I want the
driver at the startup of installation.

Thanks again dear

Regards
Mohit

boot up off a RHEL installation CD and type "expert
noprobe"

I get a list of drivers that I could load but none is
obviously for
Intel AHCI:
Listed SATA drivers are
   K2 SATA controllers (ixgb)
Promise SATA SX8 block driver (sx8)
   Promise SATA controllers (sata_promise)
   Promise SX4 SATA controllers (sata_sx4)
   SIS SATA controllers (sata_sis)
   Silicon Image SATA controllers (sata_sil)
   VIA SATA controllers (sata_via)
   VSC7174 SATA controllers (sata_vsc)
   nVidia NForce SATA controllers (sata_nv)

"

does it works for you?

2ndly are you able to compile the sata driver (on pata
disk)? any errors? if not get hold on of the .ko file
and copy it to a disk. Then reboot from the CD with
command at boot prompt : linux dd

Insert the disk and load the driver?

If that works fine? other wise compile the kernel
afresh. I can make the rpm kernel for you.

Any way you may need a pata disk for some of your
above operations(like compilation etc).

Dear Sunny,

Thanks for responding, Sorry for providing incomplete info but
I supose SiS uses only one SATA Controller presently.
Even in Libata there is support for only one SiS SATA Controller,

The motherboard details are here:
http://www.directron.com/k8smx.html

The URL of the driver source is as below:

http://www.sis.com/download/download_step2.php?id=155881&agree=1&country=Taiwan&\
Image7911.x=49&Image7911.y=5

OR

http://www.sis.com/download/agreement.php?id=155881

OR

Another way for reaching the driver source page is:
Open: http://www.sis.com/download/
Select: Chipset software -> SATA & RAID -> Linux
Click on GO

SiS SATA Driver for Linux kernel2.6.10

The problem is I want to compile the source code and make
driver disk (copy driver to floppy) so that I can use it when installing
RHEL 4 or FC 4. Can you help me in making the driver disk for kernel 2.6.10.

Thanks
&
Regards

Mohit

Hi Mohit
A little bit more info could make it easier for
someone to help you.
1. Mention the SiS sata controller's exact name. There
are couple of them and we dont know whats on your
motherboard.(Read the Motherboard Manual)
2. You mention the source code is avialable from
sis.com.It could be lot easier if you mention the
exact url from where to get this sourc code for your
controller.

Since you say you are a Linux newbie , I recommend
from my personal experiance to read this HowTO

So you need to have a broad based search. I think problem is not so

Hi Guys!!

I was wondering if we are set on having the CHD-LUG's site. I got some free time and was trying to figure out one site for the same. I have started on it under my playway domain name i.e. jugadi.com and have added CMS, Web Chat, phpBB, Poll, GuestBook to it as of now. I am using Mambo as CMS, which is quite a neat interface.

Please visit www.jugadi.com and see if it works. We can then get the new domain name for CHD-LUG (e.g. chd-lug.org) and then I will rename the site to that.

Feedbacks and prospective domain names are awaited and most welcomed.

Cheers
