Hi,
I just installed Slackware and it is really cool. Last time i
installed an year ago, it was very difficult to install and no much
support either, but now it is at par with other distributions and
maybe better too since it is quite clutterless.
Enjoy...

You can search www.tldp.org for good online as well as downloadable books. In
paper back edition, Redhat 9.0 Bible will be a
good book to start.

>Actually i installed the Red Hat
>9.0 but want to know how to install additional addonns

Different flavors have different ways of providing addons. Debian linux uses
.deb files, redhat uses .rpm.
Under redhat linux packages are distributed as <package.rpm>. You can install
such package by the following command.
                    rpm -ivh package-name.rpm

Tar files are a bundle of lot of files. Like you pack all your papers in a rim.
.gz files are compressed files as you have zip in
windows.

tar -cvf backupfile-name. tar -P <path> --totals -W
can create a backupfile named "backupfile-name.tar" for you form the <path>
directory.

gzip backupfile-name.tar will compress it to "backupfile-name.tar.gz"

For more details always resort to manual pages and info pages. That is what I
recommend.

Hope this helps!

Post might have been long. It is my first post here. I am regular active member

Dear Kamaljit,

If the startup directly takes you to the XWindows Logon, you can access the
text-based shell by pressing ALT+CTRL+F1 (F1 to F6) while in XWindows for
Shell1 (TTY1 to TTY6). Then you can login and use the shell. In XWindows too
u can run XTerm for getting the shell.

Please lemme know if you still stuck.

Cheers

Arminder

hi there
shell or terminal can be reached by pressing any of Ctrl+Alt+F1 to Ctrl+Alt+F6. to go back to the graphical mode press Ctrl+Alt+F7. Alternately shell in graphical mode can be achieved by Gnome/System/terminals and selecting any of the four ( Sorry i cant say if the path is correct coz i am not running linux at the moment. however it is somewhere near to it. Anyway if you still dont get it mail me n i will givw you exact path)

yes, the world is not that bad that nobody will care.
actually with the advent of RHL 8.0 onwards, RHL decided to curtail the third party license products/plugins from its distribution. So, all these plugins have to be separately installed (actually these plugins are not ope source code and does not adhere to GPL).
Better use external modem. Internal modem is not a modem in real sense.

Hi Amit,

PDC means Primary Domain Controller. Actually this term was mostly
used in Windows NT than in Win2K. In Win2K we make use of ADS (Active
Direcory Services).

To setup a PDC, I would recommend Mr Randhawa to make use of Samba
and make it as Domain Master. Then you can setup the Machine accounts
and make the machines (workstations) join the domain. Thereafter
anybody can use that machine to login while authentication is handled
by the Samba server.

This way you can apply policies, keep user profiles and use logon
scripts, as is what you can do with NT PDC. Also you can use OpenLDAP
for Win2K ADS.

The best document I could lay my hands on while searching is as below:

http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/connect/csamba6.html

Dear All,

I had recently joined the group and thought of wishing u all.

The group seems to be dormant. 27 memebers and only 13 posts. Lets
make good use of it and use it more often.

I am sure that quiet good number of us always come across some
problems and I love troubleshooting. I have more then 3 years of
experience in Linux which I would like to put to good use by helping
out those in need.

So now onwards I would love to c it put to better use. I am always
there to support the cause.

Hi ppl,
As a starting point I have the following distributions of linux.
1) Linux Mandrake 8.2 CD1
2) Lify Linux ( 1 CD )
Lify Linux is a distribution which runs directly off the cd and there
is no need to install it ,(though you can if you want).
Anyone who wants a copy of these distribution can have it from me.
Also if anyone of you has any other distribution please tell it to us.
Thanks
Hitesh Gupta

p.s. :- If anyone wants to contact me on any topic other than linux
please contact me personally rather than through the group.
