Dear Readers,

With the Fedora team, as usual, pushing the release date of FC6 again
and again (before finally releasing it on 24th and it getting
available for download on 25th), we were left with no option but to go
for the next most requested distro on the bulletinn board - Mandriva
Linux 2007. This distro is a treat for users who like to work on
multi-architecture platforms (32-bit and 64-bit).

Coming to the editorial highlights, we have a mega interview with
Javed Tapia, founder Red Hat India, who speaks to the media for the
first time after stepping down from his position of director - India.
In the trends section, this month we discuss about the use of Linux in
tghe supercomputing world.

We have two very interesting case studies this month, one that
discusses the first mover advantage taken by Samsung by incorporating
the 'Linux-compatible' logo in their printer advertisement and the
other about Bombay high court adopting Linux/OSS.

In our opinions section, this month, the community opines on how
whether IPR is a boon or a bane. Also, in the 'Down Memory Lane'
series, we look at the history of the KDE project.

Hello All,

Greetings from the LINUX For You magazine team!

As you all know, we run a section called 'Opinions' in LFY where we
pose a question to the community and industry and publish the top five
responses (selected by our technical editors) in the magazine. Thanks
to all those who responded to the last month's question. The best
among the responses received have been published in the October 2006
issue of LFY.

This month we have chosen the topic:
"Intellectual Property Rights - boon or bane?"

What's your take on this? Our eyes and ears are wide open and we are
waiting to listen to your ideas. Please write to us at
sujata.banerjee@... with a CC to atul@..., before
10th October 2006.

The top five responses will be published in the November 2006 issue of
LINUX for You.

Look forward to your responses.

Thanks,

Dear Readers,

First off, on behalf of the whole team of LINUX For You, here's
wishing a very happy Dussehra and Diwali to the whole community.

This month, LINUX For You has bundled another 'hugely-requested'
distro DVD with it - CentOS 4.4 - which many believe is the closest
one can get to RHEL for free.

On the editorial front, we have a mega story on the trends in Linux
and open source usage in the mighty Banking, Financial Services and
Insurance (BFSI) sector of the Indian industry. Along with this, we
have our regular hardware focus on 'Linux Laptops' and software focus
on Linux based High Performance Computing Solutions.

Under the opinions section, this month, the community opines on how
India can develop a community of open source developers and thus
become a 'net-giver' to the open source world. Also, in the 'Down
Memory Lane' series, we look at the history of the GNOME project.

Hi Linuxers,
Yesterday we celebrated belated SFD'06  at DAVV, auditorium, Indore. It was
well attended by over 1000+ participants from more than 25 colleges of
Indore.
Function was presided by Mr P K Jain and Dr A K Singh was our guest of
honour.  Event started at sharp 11:30 AM. After welcome speech  by Vikas,
both the guests graced the event by their thought provoking speech.
Next was a presentation on Linux and FOSS by me. It was well received by
audience. It lasted about 2 and half hour. I demonstrated some cool features
of Linux and explained the philosophy behind Linux and OSS over all. I also
discussed some points about hacker culture. I demonstrated Live Hindi Linux
distribution, "Rangoli" by IndLinux group. Audience was thrilled to see it.
Next I demonstrated Mepis Live Linux distribution. I played some games too
on it.  :-)   Then installation of Live CD was demonstrated.
After it we screened first Open source animation movie,  "Elephants Dream" ,
to showcase the animation capabilities of open source 3D animation software
blander. It was amazing experience for audience. Then we took a 30 min
break.
Next session started about 3:15 and we screened "Revolution OS" .  It was
also well received by the audience. After this I discussed some development
tools like Anjuta, eclipse, Qt designer etc. And also explained the
possibilities in programming on Linux.  That was very informative session
and most of the audience was convinced to work on Linux to complete  their
day to day programming assignments.
Next was the most interesting and most interactive session, " Quiz Time " .
We asked questions based on Linux and OSS, and distributed prizes to the
winners. It was really nice to see the enthu of the audience.
Event was concluded by a vote of thanks by me. We called upon all the
volunteers on the stage and introduced them the audience. Some more guys
also joined the LUG Core team at this moment from the audience. It was such
a moving moment to see the dedication of the volunteers to LUG-Indore.
Thanks a ton guys !
No event is successful without active participation of the volunteers and
SFD'06, Indore was not an exception. LUG Indore has a dedicated team of
volunteers. We proud of our team. We are thankful to Vikas, Rishabh,
Ranveer, Kapil, Kapil G, Sanjay, Sachin, Hariom, Amber, Chetan, Gaurav,
Amay, Govind, Shankey, Sidharth, Sourabh, Tanmay, Girish.  If any name is
missing it's because of my short memory, please excuse me and feel free to
add their name. Two guys owe special mention Chetan G for all the technical
support and Mayank Goyal for everything else.
We are also grateful  to Dr Rajkamal, VC, DAVV; Mr P K Jain, Director,
Pioneer Institute of Professional Studies; Dr A K Singh, EMRC, DAVV; Mr
Akhilesh Gour, CEO, GourSoft; Mr Sanjay Vyas, Director, Hardware Tech Park.

Hi Pardeep,

Well you look quiet confused in here. Like you said, Squid first checks its cache and automatically fetches the content if it can't find that in its cache. So no need to do anything special on client's proxy settings. It remains port 3128.

Off the topic; r u signed up with all these groups whom you have posted your query. :)

Subject: [linux_chandigarh] server request Ports to another server!!!(read it must)

Hi Friends How r u
Can anybody tell me about my one more problem about SQUID
As we know that Squid(proxy) server listen on Port# 3128. So let us suppose it accept a request from a client on port 3128 for any URL.But Firstly it will check own Cache if that URL related link does not exist in cache then it will forward the request to web server over internet
Now my problem is that when Proxy further forward the request of client then proxy from which port using for request to webserver port 80 over internet.
For Example:-
# iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-port 3128
How web server send back response on Port 80.(-dport 80)
Or if server request further to another server for any purpose then do it use same port as listening port for client
But in case of client it first open unpriviliged port greater than 1024 then request from that port to server.
So in case of server what would happen,Actually i m confusing over it
Please reply me as soon as possible

Pardeep

Hi Pardeep,

Iteration, or iterative resolution, refers to the resolution process used by a name server when it receives iterative queries. Iterative resolution, on the other hand, doesn't require nearly as much work on the part of the queried name server. In iterative resolution, a name server simply gives the best answer it already knows back to the querier. No additional querying is required. The queried name server consults its local data (including its cache), looking for the data requested. If it doesn't find the answer there, it finds the names and addresses of the name servers closest to the domain name in the query in its local data, and returns that as a referral to help the querier continue the resolution process. Note that the referral includes all of the name servers listed in the local data; it's up to the querier to choose which one to query next.
Simply speaking, the recursive query asks the DNS server to fetch the exact answer. So it answers even for non-authoritative records. Whereas in Iterative, the server gives the best answer from its cache. It may be referall to an uathoritative DNS server for that domain and stops there. DOesn't really go and fetch answer from those.

Hi Pardeep,

Queries come in two flavors, recursive and iterative (or nonrecursive). Recursive queries place most of the burden of resolution on a single name server. Recursion, or recursive resolution, is just a name for the resolution process used by a name server when it receives recursive queries. As with recursive algorithms in programming, the name server repeats the same basic process (querying a remote name server and following any referrals) until it receives an answer.

Not sure if I'm getting your question here, but this most probably
sounds like an issue with escape missing escape characters. Try
importing a simpler formatted text file and that would help you in
understanding your problem.

Another thing bogging me down is importing text file in mysql database.
The fields are delimited by tab.
In the load data local infile command i'm mentioning '\t' as field
delimiter, which is importing fine, for most of the data, except for
the data containing \ encountering which the data of next field is
missed.

Any idea regarding this peculiar issue ??

with another thanx
