Agree with Sharninder, I'm using Pcquest 2004 linux and its good. But Kernel 2.6 still have some bugs. It does not recognize the soundcard of Intel 845chipset board.
********
Hi,
Have u tried sndconfig command.
Press Cntrl-Alt- F1 or Cntrl-Alt- F2 and then login as root
and use above command.
It shud work
Anaconda also is hard to configure. Anyway a choice to try.
*********
The best way to configure kernel is to use menuconfig.
2.6 is very handy...
Features like pre-emption etc. are now supported....
And believe me .... Microsoft days are almost UP :)

I am using kernel 2.6.3 on debian on an 845 chipset.
My soundcard and the graphics card are working
perfectly. I used alsa to configure my card, btw. ALSA
provides the default sound drivers in the 2.6 kernel
as opposed to the OSS drivers with the earlier
kernels. It's been quite a while since I tried
anaconda but afaik its pretty painless and a breeze to
configure. What problems did u have ?
Regards
Sharninder

RedHat Linux is now Fedora and Fedora Core 1 was
distributed along with LinuxForYou Feb 2004. So get
that, if you can't find anyone willing to lend you a
CD. Btw, PCQ Linux Mar 2004 also looks good. Its the
first distro to carry kernel 2.6.

Hi Fellas,
Does anyone have latest version of RedHat cuz their servers are way
too busy and refuse connections. I have latest Slackware 9.1(2 CDs)
if some one wants it..
Enjoy...
Hi,
I just installed Slackware and it is really cool. Last time i
installed an year ago, it was very difficult to install and no much
support either, but now it is at par with other distributions and
maybe better too since it is quite clutterless.
Enjoy...

You can search www.tldp.org for good online as well as downloadable books. In
paper back edition, Redhat 9.0 Bible will be a
good book to start.
>Actually i installed the Red Hat
>9.0 but want to know how to install additional addonns

Different flavors have different ways of providing addons. Debian linux uses
.deb files, redhat uses .rpm.
Under redhat linux packages are distributed as <package.rpm>. You can install
such package by the following command.
rpm -ivh package-name.rpm
Tar files are a bundle of lot of files. Like you pack all your papers in a rim.
.gz files are compressed files as you have zip in
windows.
tar -cvf backupfile-name. tar -P <path> --totals -W
can create a backupfile named "backupfile-name.tar" for you form the <path>
directory.
gzip backupfile-name.tar will compress it to "backupfile-name.tar.gz"
For more details always resort to manual pages and info pages. That is what I
recommend.
Hope this helps!

Dear Kamaljit,
If the startup directly takes you to the XWindows Logon, you can access the
text-based shell by pressing ALT+CTRL+F1 (F1 to F6) while in XWindows for
Shell1 (TTY1 to TTY6). Then you can login and use the shell. In XWindows too
u can run XTerm for getting the shell.
Please lemme know if you still stuck.
Cheers
Arminder

yes, the world is not that bad that nobody will care.
actually with the advent of RHL 8.0 onwards, RHL decided to curtail the third
party license products/plugins from its distribution. So, all these plugins
have to be separately installed (actually these plugins are not ope source
code and does not adhere to GPL).
Better use external modem. Internal modem is not a modem in real sense.
