its a mailing list, so anything that flows over email can be linked in
with no issues. The added advantage being that you can also read it over
a nntp feed from gmane.

while email spam might be low, this list has by far the most amount of
commercial unsolicited material being thrown at me. I am presently on
about 40 odd lists, some ( like lkml ) are much higher traffic and I
only read through filters.
Also, moderation is a funny business. Unless there is a problem - no
need to try and fix it. eg. how much spam do you see on most LUG lists ?
( my local lug, gllug - has a very active list and sees no spam
whatsoever ). Mailing list software, over the years, has sort of evolved
into something that is fairly usable. So given this, how many emails
have you moderated 'out' and not accepted to be posted in the last week
- which also came from subscribed users ?
finally, along the same point. You are most welcome to be the moderator
if you like. I would prefer, at the onset anyway, for an unmoderated
list. If we have problems, we can fix them. By just allowing posts from
subscribers (both via the list and on Y!Groups ) we should eradicate
most UCE anyway.

I was trying to prove a point..

where did you get that from ? Mailing lists have always had old emails
available. ( eg. https://www.redhat.com/archives/nahant-list/ )

Might make it a bit more usable :)

you can use syaptic/apt-rpm on FC6 as well ...

Karanbir Singh : http://www.karan.org/ : 2522219@icq
Well i have no objections to that but there are a couple of points i would like to put up..
1. Will that list be linked to group? I have no idea regarding that. In case NO, how will new members find the list??
2. Will that list be moderated? If yes, then by whom and what criterion. BTW earlier all posts on this group were moderated by me. Later some more moderators were added. Now, as I am not able to devote much time, I have permitted some frequent users to post without moderation, and rest are handled by moderators, including myself. Because of this moderation, i believe the amount of span in group is almost nil.
3. Regarding the 'content of mails being lost in clutter'. Well your original message was posted in the end of other messages. Most users don't care to delete the useless data while replying to mails. And i don't think that can be stopped.
4. Old Posts won't be available in case of a mailing list
Personally I am not against any such action if you think it will benefit the group.
Just wondering if anyone has considered moving from yahoogroups to a real mailing list setup ? If required, I am happy to setup, host and run the list.
Why move ? well, firstly just look at the amount if marketing and
promotional crap that comes down with each email sent. And they seem to break threading for message replies. Its bad enough that you need to literally *look* for the email content amongst all the adverts.

Freespire is a good distribution, it looks more like windows or they have tried making it so. I am running it since last 1 week and find it to be stable. It detected my hardware easily. It comes pre-bundled with java and flash player. It has CNR, something similar to synaptic where we can easily install software. It is heavy on resources. Overall a good distribution for the newbies. The graphic work is great in it which makes it heavy. I'll still recommend ubuntu 6.10 but you should give freespire a try.

I agree with them. Looking at Linspire I found that they

Anyway, I had written about the new Suse 10.2 which seems to

I too agree about FC 6. I had the same experience.
So far Ubuntu rules the rest.

Interesting, a bug becoming a part of a "standard"
http://www.robweir.com/blog/2006/10/leap-back.html
Datetimes in Excel are represented as date serial numbers, where dates
are counted from an origin, sometimes called an epoch, of January 1st,
1900. The problem is that from the earliest implementations Excel got
it wrong. It thinks that 1900 was a leap year, when clearly it isn't,
under Gregorian rules since it is not divisible by 400. This error
causes functions like the WEEKDAY() spreadsheet function to return
incorrect values in some cases. See the Microsoft support article on
this issue.
Now I have no problems with that bug remaining in Excel for backwards
compatibility reasons. That's an issue between Microsoft and their
customers and not my concern. However, I am quite distressed to see
this bug promoted into a requirement in the Ecma Office Open XML
(OOXML) specification. From Volume 4 (Markup Language Reference --
warning 34Mb download!) section 3.17.4.1 page 2522), "Date
Representation":
For legacy reasons, an implementation using the 1900 date base
system shall treat 1900 as though it was a leap year. [Note: That is,
serial value 59 corresponds to February 28, and serial value 61
corresponds to March 1, the next day, allowing the (nonexistent) date
February 29 to have the serial value 60. end note] A consequence of
this is that for dates between January 1 and February 28, WEEKDAY
shall return a value for the day immediately prior to the correct day,
so that the (nonexistent) date February 29 has a day-of-the-week that
immediately follows that of February 28, and immediately precedes that
of March 1.
So the new OOXML standard now contradicts 400 years of civil calendar
practice, encodes nonexistent dates and returns the incorrect value
for WEEKDAY()? And this is the mandated normative behavior? Is this
some sort of joke?
Vikas -ji,
Supporting Ubuntu was decided? did we have any other meeting than two
Fridays?
Sir, if we want to support Linux, then what does it mean that we support
Ubuntu? I mean that Linux is the same. And i think it makes more sense
make a Linux user group rather than a ubuntu user group. Let the end
user decide the flavor (in my humble openion). Well yes, we can
/RECOMMEND/ Ubuntu or anything for that matter.
Secondly, what exactly we mean when we say we will support Linux? Are we
going to offer Technical support for it? What would be support
boundaries in that case?

Mohit

hello all,
the next meeting is at 6:15 PM at DAV college only. we have decided that
we will support ubuntu. its easy to install and easy to use. as there
are many choices and we can not support all so ubuntu was voted by all.
i havent used it at all, therefore i will share my views later.
I agree that we should fix a time and date in advance and let
everyone know. Everyone is of course very welcome to the meetings at the
DAV College. So we meet next Friday at 6.15 pm, if everyone is okay with
this date and time.
Secondly, I feel we need to have some people responsible for
certain things like calling a meeting or agenda, etc. We might come up
with a bare minimum infrastructure for this, so that we can function much
better.
Last Friday we experimented with Centos and SimplyMepis.
Two nice releases and in the process learnt useful commands and some small but
important things.
I found SimplyMepis a nice release though it is based upon
Ubuntu and is not as current as Ubuntu/Kubuntu.
I have downloaded the Kubuntu Feisty Herd 1 CD released today or so.
Will experiment and give feedback.
With regards
Anil Sarwal

Mr. Negroponte, the founding director of the M.I.T. Media Laboratory,
said he was amused by the attention his little machine was getting. It
is not the first time he has been challenged for proclaiming
technology's promise.
"It's as if people spent all of their attention focusing on Columbus's

"You have to remember that what this is about is education."
Seymour Papert, a computer scientist and educator who is an adviser to

Hey all.
I don't think there was any meeting scheduled for the last friday. Atleast I
didn't get any mail regarding the same. I am not coming today for the meeting
(if any) as I am busy with my exams. Let's meet sometime next week. What say you
all?
Nipun.
PS: I think the reason for nobody's showing up, is that the meeting once a week
are too frequent. We should talk about this on the next meet.

Hello All,
Greetings from the LINUX For You magazine team!
As you all know, we run a section called 'Opinions' in LFY where we
pose a question to the community and industry and publish the
responses (selected by our technical editors) in the magazine. Thanks
to all those who responded to the last month's question. The best
among the responses received have been published in the December 2006
issue of LFY.
The forthcoming issue of LFY would carry a story on the following:
Is the war really against Microsoft?
The article would focus on whether OSS world is actually fighting
against proprietary software at an ideological level. Or is it that it
remains a battle against Microsoft? We would like to focus at the
various levels on which this antagonism between the open source
evangelists and believers on proprietary software shapes up. Is the
discontentment against Microsoft only to the extent of patent issues?
Or that Microsoft is just a mere player, while the FOSS community is
fighting at the much higher level of psychology...
We value your suggestions and comments. So, any idea you would like to
share with us is most welcome.
Please write to us at sujata.banerjee@... with a CC to
atul@..., before 10th November,2006.
The best responses would be published in the Jan 2007 issue of LFY.
Looking forward to your responses.
Thanks,
Sujata Banerjee, Editorial Coordinator, LFY

LINUX For You
In last two meets we all have been discussing various distributions. Most of us agreed that Ubuntu is better for the desktops and CentOS for running servers. I think Ubuntu and its derivatives like Kbuntu, Edubuntu and Xubuntu are good for people who have some interest and knowledge of Linux. To motivate and make someone use Linux we need more easy and pre customized version. Something like Xandros or Linspire (ex Lindows) which is more similar to MS-Windows, mainly XP and where
it is more easy to install additional softwares. But both of them come for a price and are not FREE (free as in beer or free as in speech, i still have to understand the lingo). It won't be easy to convince someone not to buy "XP Starter Edition" (costs $30 - $40) instead of Xandros or Linspire which come at double the price for basic computing.
Linspire Five-0 SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
(SLED 10) and Xandros Business Desktop Linux.
I agree with them. Looking at Linspire I found that they have recently launched FREESPIRE its open source/free derivative. Linspire/Lindows have been in this domain since long and have the experience to give a stable distro. It looks good, I will install it soon and hope that Linspire wouldn't have done the same with it i.e. what RedHat did to Fedora. So friends lets investigate/research more into it, if promoting Linux is one of the objectives of our group. And pls. update the group about its pros and cons.
