virt-install and virsh are the easiest way to manage any virtualisation setup
I've seen so far, and they are both included in CentOS-5.

Dear Members,

A couple of months ago, when we held our editorial meeting to discuss
about the August issue, an interesting point was made, and it came
almost like a revelation. We realised that we have published myriad
articles on popular distros like Fedora, openSUSE and Ubuntu, but
probably never done due justice to the true community distro - Debian
Linux. So, here we are, with the Debian special issue.

This issue is special, both on the editorial as well as the DVD front.
Not only does it bundle the full set of three DVDs containing the
complete Debian package, it also features the best of articles on the
Debian project

Apart from Debian, embedded development seems to be the pseudo theme
for this issue. In addition to an article on debootstrap, we have a
couple of more articles on this topic that should be of interest to
the developer community, especially those working in the field of
Embedded development.

Talking about the industry, probably the biggest news that made
headlines this month was CUPS' creator Michael Sweet's announcement
that Apple has acquired the project. Though nothing seems fishy from
the outside and community also seems to be pretty cool about it, we
have tried our bit to explore the pros and cons of this move.

We have put in our best to make this issue extra special for our
readers. We used to get a lot of requests for bundling the complete
Debian distro with LINUX For You. This time, not only we have done
that, but also got the best of authors to write about Debian. That's
why, I hope that our readers will be able to appreciate our decision
to price this issue at Rs 125. Though the subscribers remain
unaffected from this price change. Another reason to subscribe, I must
say Wink

Debian is a free operating system for your computer. An operating
system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your

system), but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU project;
hence the name GNU/Linux.

Debian GNU/Linux provides more than a pure OS: it comes with over
18,733 packages, precomplied software bundled up in a nice format for
easy installation on your machine.

To start the installation, boot from the DVD. Make sure your BIOS
setup is configured to allow booting from DVD. To try out the new

We need your ideas of what all you can do!! We are starting to build
this event - that is why change from freedel to freed.in - so that it
is community driven rather than ILUG-D driven.

Of course it may be late for this event but if interested people show
up we can then start planning towards the next event and make it
bigger and more participative.

But there are XEN images for CentOS 4 and 5. Why do you wanna stay with CentOS 3.4 ?

And if you ARE hell-bent on CentOS 3.4, why don't you just go for anoterh alternative like VirtualBox ?

I have not personally tried Xen, but I use VirtualBox (which is a Open source software). It is a Vmware clone and works nicely .
There are binaries available for RHEL 4 & 5 at :
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
So, I'm pretty sure it'll work with CentOS as well.

Another thing that you can do is use Vmware workstation for Linux from:
http://www.vmware.com/download/ws/

I have VT flag enabled

Since your hardware is optimised for virtualization as well, you can even try the Linux KVM (Kernel Virtual Machine) from :
http://sourceforge.net/projects/kvm

However, I have not used this one myself and am in no position to tell you how good or bad it is.

If I'm not mistaken, in all the Virtual Machine managers, (I know for sure in VirtualBox and Vmware), you have an option to "clone" your virtual machine so you do not have to do the same process over and over again.

Do let us know, what you finally chose, why  and what was the performance you got.

Thanks Bhagat for ur quick reply!!!
Just FYI....

I have already tested VMware WS--- and found its
performance very slow.

I never tried other options......But I have configured
a para-virtualized & fully-virtualized guests using
XEN on CentOS-5 and found para-vitualized guests
working very well compared to fully-virt. guests.

But the problem with para-virt. guests is ...that
theres' NO XEN image available for CentOS 3.4---which
is required for my project ---for Migrating from
single dedicated machines to some 3 High grade Dell
2950 servers hving 32 GB Ram and 1.5 TB of hard
Disk....a combo of Quad-core processors..To save Rack
space & power consumption at our organisations' Data
Centers in San Mateo/Franc.....

I am still finding EASY ways for configuring XEN.....

Thanks

Opyum (pronounced 'opium') provides a set of tools to enable users,
who do not have a good network (eg., Internet) connection at their
ready disposal, to easily install new packages or update existing ones
through the conventional package management system available in
Fedora.

If you are interested then you can read more about it at
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SummerOfCode/2007/DebarshiRay

Tar ball: http://rishi.fedorapeople.org/opyum/opyum-0.0.2.tar.gz
MD5SUM: 299873e5d0b4d762a261edb6b9bc62e6
SHA1SUM: ac50ec4a048a4db55c4bbf2d4a2419ff492f70ad

Pre-requisites: pirut-1.3.11

Documentation page:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DebarshiRay/Opyum

Release notes are in NEWS in the release tarball.

Instructions on using Opyum are in the README in the release tarball.

Installation instructions:
1. $ tar -xzvf opyum-0.0.2.tar.gz
2. $ cd opyum-0.0.2
3. $ ./configure --prefix=/usr
(Other prefixes are not expected to work. Please bear with it for
the moment.)
4. $ make
5. # make install

Execution instructions:
1. $ LANG=en_US.UTF-8 opyum
(There is a bug involving Python and Pirut, which may cause the
program to crash on localized desktops. See
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=252136 )

Bug-reports and comments are to be sent to rishi@....

Happy hacking,
Debarshi

Hi,

I have found that the 'cheapest' way to get a DVD when I need it (and
faster than my downloading it) is through a service provider. I am
happy with the one I am using but various links for vendors in India
are available at:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Distribution/OnlineVendors#head-57e003186fd5c0cb6b\
c33754f80992968d0cdae1

The vendors above are able to supply no just Fedora but many other
distributions as well.

For those upgrading systems, I came across the following very
interesting post on upgrading fc6 to fc7 online
http://www.ioncannon.net/linux/68/upgrading-from-fc6-to-fedora7-with-yum/

Since we cannot upgrade a system online with our bandwidth, I adopted
the solution above by copying the contents of the dvd on the harddisk
and found it useful for my family systems.

1) try installing using a cd/dvd (preferably the single bootable disk that they have from fedora 7)

2) see the link http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FAQ#head-640c24d1609de5de1e7955fc46743cc017e77d75

Hi,

As a general rule,

1. Use as new a distribution as available. New motherboards may not be
supported on older versions. When I bought my system, making sound
work on FC6 was a pain. FC7 installation, 3 months later, was very
smooth.

2. Corporate distributions like RHEL support less varied hardware.
Stability is critical for them.
Check the redhat site for supported hardware - https://hardware.redhat.com/
If RHEL is critical, select the hardware from the supported list. It
is safer and will save time.

3. Distributions like Fedora or Ubuntu are more likely to work on a
wider range of hardware. Knoppix is also very useful for testing and
diagnosing hardware issues.

Hi folks,

Linus' latest interview, and the first with an Indian perspective, has
been published on linuxforu.com (now being renamed as openITis.com).

It's right there at the top of the homepage of www.openitis.com.

India's 60th Independence Day proved to be a perfect opportunity for
an alpha-launch of openitis.com. A lot of work is still-in-progress.

You can compare your hardware individually and see if that is supported..

If you ask me, 1 is easier to do

Anil
