SafeSquid 4.2.1 is focused on improvisations in logs, and handling of
forwarded requests.

# Until SafeSquid 4.2.0 SafeSquid needed a restart when the logfiles
reached 2GB size. From 4.2.1 this limitation is removed.

# The Native log will now record the application of "profiles".

# A unique record identifier will now be printed with every line of
extended log, to prevent duplication of records when imported into SQL
databases.

# Prior to 4.2.1, the time spent by the user on an HTTPS / SSL session
was not recorded in the Access Log. From 4.2.1 the CONNECT requests
will be appropriately logged.

# New variables for use in Custom Templates and External Parsers, are
being introduced.

SafeSquid 4.2.1 and later versions would be -

# compatible to systems running 64bit operating systems

# easily installable on all Linux distros, without the inconvenience
of locating and fixing the ssl libraries.

I don't know much about the above said laptops, but if you are concernerd about
heat (the indian temprature ranges and, or environment) and battery issues, you
should look the only industiral grade models. I have a DELL Inspiron 4150 which
has/is working fine and runs/remains on for weeks until I'm on a tour or reboot
into a newer kernel.

OTOH, the 64bit machines are not fully supported by any of the known good
distributions, you need to download, compile and, or fine tune most/all of the
packages yourself; gentoo may make a few things easiy for you, but it will take
hours and housr if not weeks to update and, or upgrade the packages in this way.
Whereas, on and, or for 32bit machine Ubuntu/Debian binary only update and, or
upgrade will take a few mintutes only.

Obviously, the above are only opiions and the opinions may differ.

Agenda of the Meeting
Objective of Chd LUG discussed. Decided as:
1. Develop a core group of members who work after regular intervals to discuss the latest development in the the FOSS world and to just chill around :)
2. Develop a plan of action to promote the use of linux, particularly amongst the student community.

Outcome of the Meeting
1. Mohit will decide upon the guidelines, aims and objectives of the Chd LUG. He ll be helped on this task by all the other members on the mailing list.
2. Siddharth will approach his college authorities to ask for permission to hold a Linux seminar in his college.
3. Gaurav will prepare a seminar to be delivered in case the above point succeeds. The topic chosen by him is "Linux as a Career Option".
4. Nipun will send out the minutes of the meeting to the mailing list (done!).

It was further decided that rather than a big inaugural event, the Chd LUG would instead hold a series of smaller events such as seminars and workshops on Linux across various colleges in and around Chandigarh. After we have gained sufficient visibility and have some experience in managing the events on a smaller scale, we would plan a bigger event somewhere in the first week of February 2008, which will include getting some eminent speakers to come and deliver talks.

Request to all the members
All the members of this mailing list are requested to come up with ideas and suggestions for the Chd LUG. We also need someone to design a logo / banner for us. So if we have any designer amongst us...

Hi Nipun (and all other friends)

Very nice to observe that you had a successful meeting. I regret i was not
able to come to attend the meet.

i would like to respond/react to some of the things here

Develop a plan of action to promote the use of linux, particularly amongst
the student community

linux is already a popular operating system. We (as per my thinking) do not
need to promote/ suggest other users to use it, but we need to identify the
people who want to use it but cannot do so due to lack of knowledge or
something else. once we do that we need to help them in using linux.

Popularising something is making people aware of it and its advantages. I
believe that most of computer literate people know what linux is and what
are its advantages. Point is that we need to understand/discover that what
are the various problems that are stopping these individuals from using
linux. We need to solve these problems.

Why i say so is because, we need to work at a basic level. there is no point
educating ppl about linux and leaving them in a state where they feel that
linux is good, but its actually not for them. Lets first have some willing
ppl shift to linux, then if the need be we can promote it.

another thing is that we need to make sure that linux enthusiasts in and
around chandigarh know about the support available from us. We need to make
an effort to make our presence felt as a group which is ready to help ppl
using linux.

Thirdly, student community is a huge community. Lets identify what we mean
as student community we want to promote (or help as per my views) linux in.

Are we talking about primary school students? are we talking about secondary
or are we talking about college students?

if there is a possibility of arranging lectures in schools about linux
awareness for students and teachers, it might just be helpful.

Punjab university uses linux intensively. We need to get some people from
there to be out activists. Department of physics for example is a heavy
user of linux.

Above are my staggered views. Would try to put them in better order next
time onwards.
These are my personal views and i am open to criticism of these. i
understand that i might just be wrong.

Cheers
Mohit Puri
(not the one who attended the meet ;)

Karan / Centos since he was there. i gather from the linux.com videos.

Yup, Karan was there wearing a blue CentOS tshirt. I believe his
workshop wasnt about CentOS as such. Since I am Debian/Ubuntu guy
didnt ask him any CentOS questions.

Hi Nipun,

I tried trac but it is more about project management and includes lots of
things like time lines, tickets, mail notice, source code etc.

I am looking for a very simple tool which can keep the details of Bugs and
it's status.

Thanks,
Bhavesh.

The Ubuntu team is proud to announce version 7.10 of the Ubuntu family of
distributions.

Ubuntu is a full-featured Linux distribution for desktops, laptops, and
servers, with a fast and easy install and regular releases. A
tightly-integrated selection of excellent applications is included, and
an incredible variety of add-on software is just a few clicks away.

Read more about the features of Ubuntu 7.10 in the following press
releases:

Ubuntu 7.10 http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu710
Desktop edition http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-desktop710
Server edition http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-server710
Ubuntu family http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-family710

Professional technical support is available from Canonical Limited and
hundreds of other companies around the world. For more information about
support, visit http://www.ubuntu.com/support

Ubuntu 7.10 will be supported for 18 months on both desktops and servers.
Users requiring a longer support lifetime on servers may choose to
continue using Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, with security support until 2011, rather
than upgrade to or install 7.10.

Ubuntu 7.10 is also the basis for new 7.10 releases of Kubuntu and
Edubuntu:

To Get Ubuntu 7.10
------------------

To download Ubuntu 7.10, or obtain CDs, visit:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu

Users of Ubuntu 7.04 will be offered an automatic upgrade to 7.10 via
Update Manager. As always, upgrades to the latest version of Ubuntu are
entirely free of charge. For further information about upgrading, see

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading

We recommend that all users read the release notes, which document
caveats and workarounds for known issues. They are available at:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/710

Find out what's new in this release with a graphical tour:

If you have a question, or if you think you may have found a bug but
aren't sure, try asking on the #ubuntu IRC channel, on the Ubuntu Users
mailing list, or on the Ubuntu forums:

@linuxmaster : Thanks for volunteering to make the Chandigarh LUG logo
and banner :)
For the logo I suggest 'Tux' representing the youth and spirit of
City Beautiful. Please people put forth your ideas for the logo.
Linuxmaster we also need your help with editing the DNS entries on the
linuxchandigarh.org domain, we were not able to modify the entries
from the web frontend.
