I did face some of these problems but not so frequently.  I face them with two particular programmes. Screen savers and wine. Could someone help?  I have a similar board and configuration.

With regards

Subject: [linux_chandigarh] Gutsy problems

i ave used dapper drake for almost 2 years and it has been very stable. But about a month ago i installed 7.10 gutsy and it has troubled me from the day one.
My machine: AMD Athlon 64, ASUS K8S-MX motherboard with SiS 760GX / 965L Chipset.  Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661/741/760 PCI/AGP or 662/761Gx PCIE VGA Display Adapter. Samsung 80 GB SATA  HDD and LG 700E Monitor.

I have 2 main problems:
1. Gutsy freezes frequently and has to be restarted by cutting out power. This happens in many situations: starting the update manager, starting firefox, opening a new webpage, or any other program doing something like reading data from the internet. The freeze ups happen usually only when machine is booted up fresh. I mean in the first few minutes. If gutsy has run for a while it continues without a problem(usually).
2. The graphics of the desktop keep on going awry. the icons disappear  and re appear my moving mouse over the area. sometime a long webpage goes bad and half part scrolls while the other part get stuck on the screen. In graphics problem gutsy is not completely unresponsive and if i at that moment either logout or simply come out by using 'switch user' command and then re enter, the graphics become ok.
3. another graphics problem is gray patches and discolouration appearing on the desktop menu bar. This usuallu happen when some window of a program is open like firefox or open office writer.

i have been told that the problem may be due to integrated SiS graphics. I  also feel there could be a hard disk issue because typically i boot up, click on the update manager, the manager starts reading from internet and the vibration noise of the hard disk increases a lot and system goes into a complete freeze.
A point to be noted is that dapper never had any such problem.
Any help/input appreciated

regards
nanbudh

C'mon guys, it's been weeks since our last meetings. And the only thing that's come out of it is a couple of logos (and nobody even commented on them!). I have included the minutes of the meeting below to stir the memory of those who were present and make them remember what we were supposed to work on.

Hoping for a positive reply from the chd lug members.

Nipun

Minutes of the meeting held on 15th October, 7 30 PM at DAV College, Sec 10, Chd.

Members Present
Anil Sarwal
Avnish
Gaurav
Mohit
Nipun
Siddharth
Jasbir (Sorry I forgot to mention you the first time)

Agenda of the Meeting
Objective of Chd LUG discussed. Decided as:
1. Develop a core group of members who work after regular intervals to discuss the latest development in the the FOSS world and to just chill around :)
2. Develop a plan of action to promote the use of linux, particularly amongst the student community.

Outcome of the Meeting
1. Mohit will decide upon the guidelines, aims and objectives of the Chd LUG. He ll be helped on this task by all the other members on the mailing list.
2. Siddharth will approach his college authorities to ask for permission to hold a Linux seminar in his college.
3. Gaurav will prepare a seminar to be delivered in case the above point succeeds. The topic chosen by him is "Linux as a Career Option".
4. Nipun will send out the minutes of the meeting to the mailing list (done!).

It was further decided that rather than a big inaugural event, the Chd LUG would instead hold a series of smaller events such as seminars and workshops on Linux across various colleges in and around Chandigarh. After we have gained sufficient visibility and have some experience in managing the events on a smaller scale, we would plan a bigger event somewhere in the first week of February 2008, which will include getting some eminent speakers to come and deliver talks.

Request to all the members
All the members of this mailing list are requested to come up with ideas and suggestions for the Chd LUG. We also need someone to design a logo / banner for us. So if we have any designer amongst us...
And we hope that the next time we meet, we would see a much larger participation from fellow Linux enthusiasts.

Regards,
Nipun Jain

SafeSquid 4.2.1 is focused on improvisations in logs, and handling of
forwarded requests.

# Until SafeSquid 4.2.0 SafeSquid needed a restart when the logfiles
reached 2GB size. From 4.2.1 this limitation is removed.

# The Native log will now record the application of "profiles".

# A unique record identifier will now be printed with every line of
extended log, to prevent duplication of records when imported into SQL
databases.

# Prior to 4.2.1, the time spent by the user on an HTTPS / SSL session
was not recorded in the Access Log. From 4.2.1 the CONNECT requests
will be appropriately logged.

# New variables for use in Custom Templates and External Parsers, are
being introduced.

SafeSquid 4.2.1 and later versions would be -

# compatible to systems running 64bit operating systems

# easily installable on all Linux distros, without the inconvenience
of locating and fixing the ssl libraries.

The Logo of Linux Chandigarh is pretty and very nice.  Some times we get delayed information of User group meeting.  It better to post about the meeting before five days. So that working person can manage easily.

Yes, I need the latest CD of Linspire. Is there anybody in or around Chandigarh having the same, then reply me.

I don't know much about the above said laptops, but if you are concernerd about
heat (the indian temprature ranges and, or environment) and battery issues, you
should look the only industiral grade models. I have a DELL Inspiron 4150 which
has/is working fine and runs/remains on for weeks until I'm on a tour or reboot
into a newer kernel.

OTOH, the 64bit machines are not fully supported by any of the known good
distributions, you need to download, compile and, or fine tune most/all of the
packages yourself; gentoo may make a few things easiy for you, but it will take
hours and housr if not weeks to update and, or upgrade the packages in this way.
Whereas, on and, or for 32bit machine Ubuntu/Debian binary only update and, or
upgrade will take a few mintutes only.

Obviously, the above are only opiions and the opinions may differ.
