The movement of Software Freedom started with the establishment of 'The Free Software Foundation (FSF)' in 1984 by MIT hacker Richard M. Stallman. The FSF advocates the software user's freedom to study and modify any program as well as redistribute its original or modified copies. FSF focuses on a completely free software system from kernel to applications and it rejects any component of the system which is non-free.  FSF released the 'GNU General Public License (GPL)' for the users of 'free software'. As a UNIX like OS, GNU/Linux distributions and the freedom of open source provide an excellent academic and research opportunity. Each application is available in source form and the author as well as the user community can be contacted online.

'GNU/Linux User Group(GLUG) - Meerut' is a GNU/Linux software user's platform to meet, discuss and innovate with other users and developers. GLUG-Meerut is the first gnu.org registered GLUG of entire UP and only the nineteenth one in India. We have helped establish the standard GNU/Linux software as part of engineering curricula in CS & IT. We also help FM Radio station at IIMT Meerut to migrate from properietary software to public domain software 'AUDACITY' released under the 'GNU General Public License (GPL)'.

Now, the efforts of GLUG-Meerut have been appreciated by Dr. Richard Stallman (the founder of 'Software Freedom Movement' from MIT, USA) as "Happy Hacking and thanks for defending the freedom in Meerut" at JNU, New Delhi on 21-12-2008. GLUG-Meerut has invited Dr. Stallman for a visit to Meerut - "The City of Freedom" - the city of 1857 war of Indian Independence which laid the seeds of the rising Indian self reliance culminating into modern Indian nation.

GLUG-Meerut community welcomes all GNU/Linux enthusiasts of Meerut and beyond. We intend to organize various workshops, seminars and conferences for proliferation of GNU/Linux philosophy of software freedom all over the western UP region and beyond. Anyone can freely join GLUG-Meerut on 'groups.google.com/group/glug-meerut'.

Subject: [ilugd] Draft policy on Open standards for e-Gov in India
-Open for Public review

Hi All,

The government has released a draft version of a Policy on Open
standards for e-Governance. It is presently open for Public review.

Please find the policy at the link below-
http://egovstandards.gov.in/Policy_Open_Std_review

The policy seems to have some really good points like-
5.1) Mandatory Characteristics:
5.1.1)Selected Standard should be Royalty Free for life time of the
standard. 5.1.2)Selected Standard should be developed in a
collaborative and consensus manner and not led by a single agency or a
small closed group of interested parties
5.1.3)Selected Standard should be recursively open; They shall not use
unpublished extensions

However we really do need to look at it with greater detail and discuss
the same.

Thanks,

Hi friends,

We are considering organizing a free Linux installation and, or setup
roadshow, first in the city beautiful Chandigarh itself and then various
other industrial cities near and, or around.

We think, that a single click installation with help the MintLinux 5.0
Elyssa (based on Debian/Ubuntu) can be a good start along with a remote
booting and single click installation of Linux with help of an updated
Knoppix Terminal Server running from an installed machine. We regard,
acknowledge and appreciate efforts of all other distributions, but we
want to showcase only the easier and most up-to-date ones in our
presentation and show.

Hence, your valuable ideas and, or considerable points are welcome in
the following categories.

1) Common for all, general end-users, assemblers, integrators and, or
private support people:

   i) Time taken in installing, booting, updating and, or dist-upgrading
and machine.

ii) Built-in hardware detection, inclusion of popular and third party
drivers i.e. mostly everything works out-of-the-box.

iii) Most needful packages like versatile OpenOffice.org, secure
browser Firefox, mail, news and feed reader Thunderbird, GIMP for image
and, or photo editing, best multimedia player MPlayer and, or versatile
instant messengers Pidgin and, or Kopete are already included and
installed in one go; no time consuming multiple restarts;)

iv) No data loss, wonderful partition manager and, or editor takes
care of moving, shrinking, expanding and, or formatting of disk drives.

  v) Accessibility of any machine from any machine with the help of
secure shell and, or vanilla X-Window desktops or via SSL.

2) Specific for IT students, educators and, or developers:

   i) The Free/Libre and Open Source movement and its benefits.

ii) Almost everything a developer needs is available and, or included.

iii) Freely available Course Management System (CMS) packages.

3) Specific for common office and, or business users:

   i) The security and, or firewall.

ii) The built-in mail, ftp, web and, or windows sharing services.

iii) Freely available Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Customer
Relationship Management (CRM), Content Management (CMS) and, or other
such packages.

4) Specific for photographers, video makers and, or audio editors:

   i) Freely available photo, video and, or audio editing tools.

5) Specific for music composers, trainers and, or directors:

   i) Freely available composition, publishing and, or other tools.

6) Specific of schools, colleges, institutions and, or the management
thereof:

   i) Freely available Course Management Systems, School Management
Systems and, or other such tools.

This can be long list, but we want to discus only mature and, or most
complete packages or projects; no doubt, your valuable ideas shall
definitely be appreciated.

Please let us know, what we are missing and, or what is we must add in
our said Linux installation and, or setup roadshow.

Thanks,
Regards,

Hi kussh,
Yes, there are lots of active LUGs all over India. To be specific to
north India, there is ILUG Delhi [1] and Lug-NorthIndia on yahoo groups

Hi Hemant,
Well the list is not dead, just laying dormant for some while now.
IIRC its been a while since there has been a meet of the members of
the list either.
Maybe one reason of the list being not that active is that the various
distros have evolved and Linux as a whole is lot more easier to
install and maintain :)
Welcome back to the list Hemant.

Hi all,
We are an p2p group named wikiocean (www.wikiocean.net) which
uses & supports free software in whichever way possible.
Most of the time when people are looking for solutions on
GNU/Linux platform they are unsure of service support.
In that context we are looking to make a database of freelancers,
small & medium support centres who are providing GNU/Linux service
support to Individuals, NGO's, small & medium organisations . As
GNU/Linux is a wide-wide world for time efficiency's sake we have
chosen ubuntu as it has the commercial support of Canonical while at
the same time has the technical stability & expertise courtesy the
Debian Universe. So if you are interested in knowing more, please
join http://groups.google.com/group/wikiubuntu.

Hi,

I just realised that I had not been making use of one of the most
appropriate/useful enhancements in Fedora 8 - DeltaRPMs.
Incidentally, it is not unique to Fedora. I believe that Suse
introduced delta rpm in 2005 and Mandriva also was using it.

The openoffice core rpm update was going to take over an hour. So, I
finally installed yum-presto plugin. The download time was now under
10 minutes!

It is a terrific tool and will be enabled by default in Fedora 9.

Hi,

Not one but two! http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/

IN WBUT mirror mirror.wbut.ac.in Fedora Linux http 3 Mb/s Soon
