hello sir thanks for help ,sir i am just starting the linux,i install redhat enterprices sir suggest me which area i started linux i am fasiniated about progaming how i start to kernal programing any book
Hi!
I was also prompted to say same thing that Hitesh already did.
But with very well said about posting by Hitesh, I dont need to
do so.
As per your question,
For any "general purpose" C program, "By general purpose, I mean
the program that links to standard C library", you can do following
with GCC.
gcc <filename.c> -o <out-filename>
* <filename.c> is your C source file
* out-filename is your executable file.
If you miss -o <out-filename>, executable will be "a.out" as hitesh
already said.

Hi there..
Before I write the solution to your problem, please note a few points.
Its better to start your own thread rather than starting from middle
of some other threads.
Also its advisable to give the thread a suitable subject title (such
as "How to compile a C program?" rather than a more general "Help"
Normally on a LUG one does not ask a particular person a problem but
rather submits it to the whole group . Looking at your mail..only
himanshu should be replying to it..but anyways here i am..
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Solution
Suppose your file name is "abc.c"
then give command: "cc abc.c"
if no error is found then a file "a.out" will be created in the directory..
to execute it simly give the command: "./a.out"
That it..

Hey Friends i need a lil help (for knowing what's happening)
I partioned my hardisk into 8 partitions out of which only first (Fat32) is primary and Rest are logical. They in increasing order of start sectors are -
{fat32},{ext3,ext2,fat32,swap,ext2,ext2,fat32}
Now their sizes (In MB's) are -
{3676.71},{4301.83,4301.83,8603.65,271.44,945.91,937.69,17018.11}
Now the problem is that when i am running gnoppix 0.8 (based on debian (kernel 2.6.7)) the last 2 partitions are interchanged (hda11 becomes hda10 and vise-versa [acc to what qtparted says]). ie they come in order -
{fat32},{ext3,ext2,fat32,swap,ext2,fat32,ext2}
I suspect the problem would also be with most (or all) distributions.
I am including the partition table for my hardisk followed by the cfdisk's output.
Well i believe you you downloaded one of the source code files..
if the file you downloaded isnt "dvtitler-0.1.1.tar.gz" than do this:
Download the above file from
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/dvtitler/dvtitler-0.1.1.tar.gz?download
untar it using command
tar-zxvf dvtitler-0.1.1.tar.gz
cd to the new folder thus created and type
./install.sh
it the error is displayed that file is not executable..then give command
chmod 711 dvtitler-0.1.1.tar.gz
./install.sh
this should do it
Get back in case you still face problem
Bye

Greetings,
I am new to computers, having purchased my first computer
4 months ago at the age of 43. I have downloaded and installed
a video editing program "kino" in RPM form. It works well.
However it needs a plugin "dvtitler" to add movie titles to
a completed video. I have not found dvtitler in RPM form.
I downloaded the source code, but have only managed to
compile it halfway before giving up last summer. It would
be wonderful if someone can direct me to a dvtitler RPM
or help otherwise. I am using SuSE Linux 9.1, AMD 2500,
ASUS A7V600X motherboard.
Gratefully and hopefully,
Jonathan Davidson

Note in some cases (like me with knoppix 3.2) you have to supply type too
ie. the same example (if in fat) will look like
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/c
For more info for valid types
Use
'man -k' on your distribution

mount <devicename> <mountpoint> should do it.
eg: mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/c

the ntfs module is usually not included in standard
kernels distributed by most (all ??) distros so ntfs
patitions cannot be mounted. OP will have to recompile
the kernel to include support for ntfs.

Hi Vipin
This is what you need to do..
first of all note down the disk parttion by using fdisk (these should
be of the format \hda\..)
next create a mount point (preferably in /mnt). a mount point is
nothing but just a directory
next edit the \etc\fstab file so as to reflect the new partitions.
fstab setting can be found in the help file..
Hope it should solve the problem..
But i am not sure if NTFS formatted partitions are mounted..
Write back in case you face difficulty

I just wanted to introduce myself to the Group. I am Vikas working with DSL, India, a company actively involved with Java Technology. To its credit the company has Asia's first 100% Java RDBMS with the name Daffodil DB (www.daffodildb.com) which is a feature rich & platform independent database. It can run in Embedded as well as Server mode.
I as a member of this group would like to contribute significantly in terms of what so ever expertise me and my company possess.
pls keep in touch..& pls inform us of any such events scheduled around kerala, tamilnadu & karnataka.
thanks a lot again.

Hello to all.
Here is the brief reports on Software Freedom activity at Kannur
(*) The Software Freedom day was celebrated on 29th August at Parishat Bhavan Kannur. (*) It was attended by over 40 people. (*) The function was inaugurated by Shri Gangadharan, KSSP ( Kerala Shastra Sahitya Parishath) member who spoke on the freedom matter elaborately. (*) It was followed by 3 hours of technical session. (*) live demo on free software OS & application packages were shown using OpenCd & Knoppix CD. (*) Few CDs of Knoppix & OpenCD were also distributed. (*) There was lively discussions on the subject. (*) More activities are planned
Most of the audience were first timers, and not aware of the free software at all. The meeting was very successful and follow up actions are planned which will be conducted soon. The members are
much impressed by the concepts of the freedom in using the software without any limits. All of them could become aware of the numerous applications available to use freely.
Follow Up actions -----------------
(*)It was decided to form a group and work towards spreading the messages to wider section of the people. As part of the follow up actions, free software awareness programs will be conducted in few schools. (*) It was pointed out that teachers should be told and convinced about freedom of using the applications and distributing it. Though few schools wanted to try GNU/Linux in their schools ,they are reluctant to use it because, the softwares supplied by IT@SCHOOL project works only on windows platforms. One such package is the "softexam" software provided by the Govt. department. Softexam 1.0 prepared by the IT@School project works only on windows based platform.( see the link http://www.teamebiz.com/case_studies_soft_exam.htm). A GNU/Linux version of
the software is not yet available to schools. (http://www.keralaeducation.net/local/more05june04.htm). So A GNU/Linux port of the software is an immediate requirement.
(*) Next week, we plan to have Free Software seminar plus demo at one school near Kuthuparamba, Kannur. (*) Four sections of Kannur collectrate already migrated to GNU/Linux. This is a major milestone as far as govt department is concerned.

Subject: [little_league] Maintainging and growing a LUG...
To: little_league@yahoogroups.comhttp://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/User-Group-HOWTO-6.html#ss6.3
Maintaining and growing a LUG
* Make the barriers to LUG membership as low as possible.
* Make the LUG's Web site a priority: Keep all information current, make it
easy to find details about meetings (who, what, and where), and make contact
information and feedback mechanisms prominent.
* Install Linux for anyone who wants it.
* Post flyers, messages, or handbills wherever computer users are in your area.
* Secure dedicated leadership.
* Follow Linus Torvalds's benevolent dictator model of leadership.
* Take the big decisions to the members for a vote.
* Start a mailing list devoted to technical support and ask the "gurus" to
participate on it.
* Schedule a mixture of advanced and basic, formal and informal, presentations.
* Support the software development efforts of your members.
* Find way to raise money without dues: for instance, selling Linux merchandise
to your members and to others.
* Consider securing formal legal standing for the group, such as incorporation
or tax-exempt status.
* Find out if your meeting place is restricting growth of the LUG.
* Meet in conjunction with swap meets, computer shows, or other community
events where computer users -- i.e., potential Linux converts -- are likely to
gather.
* Elect formal leadership for the LUG as soon as is practical: Some helpful
officers might include President, Treasurer, Secretary, Meeting Host (general
announcements, speaker introductions, opening and closing remarks, etc.),
Publicity Coordinator (handles Usenet and e-mail postings, local publicity),
and Program Coordinator (organises and schedules speakers at LUG meetings).
* Provide ways for members and others to give feedback about the direction,
goals, and strategies of the LUG.
* Support Linux and free software / open source development efforts by donating
Web space, a mailing list, or ftp site.
* Establish an ftp/Web site for relevant software.
* Archive everything the LUG does for the Web site.
* Solicit "door prizes" from Linux vendors, VARs, etc. to give away at
meetings.
* Give credit where due.
* Join SSC's GLUE (Groups of Linux Users Everywhere).
* Submit your LUG's information to all the LUG lists.
* Publicise your meetings on appropriate Usenet groups and in local computer
publications and newspapers.
* Compose promotional materials, like Postscript files, for instance, members
can use to help publicise the LUG at workplaces, bookstores, computer stores,
etc.
* Make sure you know what LUG members want the LUG to do.
* Release press releases to local media outlets about any unusual LUG events
like an Installation Fest, Net Day, etc.
* Use LUG resources and members to help local non-profit organisations and
schools with their Information Technology needs.
* Advocate the use of Linux zealously but responsibly.
* Play to LUG members' strengths.
* Maintain good relations with Linux vendors, VARs, developers, etc.
* Identify and contact Linux consultants in your area.
* Network with the leaders of other LUGs in your area, state, region, or
country to share experiences, tricks, and resources.
* Keep LUG members advised on the state of Linux software -- new kernels, bugs,
fixes, patches, security advisories -- and the state of the Linux world at
large -- new ports, trademark and licensing issues, where Torvalds is living
and working, etc.
* Notify the Linux Documentation Project -- and other pertinent sources of
Linux information -- about the documentation the LUG produces: technical
presentations, tutorials, local HOWTOs, etc.
