Do you intend to build a complete OS from scratch or just modify an
existing one?

Customize it for a specefic task..

My college project was a directly bootable video/mp3/Audio CD! The OS
size was below 10 MB including ISOLinux bootLoader, The Kernel and the
Initrd. You can try something else.

As the OS was meant only for one and only one task - playing videos,
It was small and other serices were all removed and the videplayer was
put in startup scripts with proper command line ..

The advantage was if you are using the video to present something,
1) you had the OS, Drivers, pretested Codec set with you on the CD
itself.. No tension if the PC they provide you will have them. Their
hard disk crashed just before you reached? No problem!
2) No human internvention except inserting the cdrom. You could go to
any conference place and just boot the cd and let it play.
No hazzles of waiting for a heavy OS to load, Go to start menu,
run media player, Play the disk.. just boot!
How much more userfrinedly do you need it? :-)

In 30 seconds flat from the time I switch on my cranky old 500mhz 64
MB RAM machine, the video was playing.. .. to say that it did not even
have a hard disk is another thing :-)

My project completed in 0 days.. I had already done it ;-D .
Seriously, It had taken me 3 months to do with half an hour per day
dedicated to it.

You can try this : A Bare minimum Linux with XPDF, Xvesa and their
dependencies. It should boot up and Display in full screen the first
PDF it finds in a predetermined Directory.

If you want to modify it, all you would need to do is, change the PDF
in the directory with a new one and burn the CD :-).

If you follow your passion, I don't see why not.

Do google searches for
Movix
Knoppix
Xvesa
xpdf, evince

If the lecturer still says there should be the college name somewhere,
Just create a nice PDF presentation about your college in Open
Office/LaTeX and use that as the sample presentation.
