Re: [linux_schools] Go, Talk & Explore in the Schools

Hi,

The best way to introduce Linux to your local school is by configuring an LTSP
server. Modest hardware will do, at first you're just proving the concept to
them. I set up a Gentoo machine which runs Squid and Squidguard (for web
caching and filtering), and then connected a bare machine as a single terminal.
I told them to use this terminal for internet, but at the same time I loaded the
server with openoffice, lots of KDE and Gnome games, educational software and so
on. The kids loved it. I just happened to configure the networked Windows
printers, so that if anyone used this Linux terminal for work they could also
print it.

(You can configure DHCP on LTSP to listen to port 1067 instead of 67. This
allows you to run two DHCP servers on your network, the existing Windows one
plus another on LTSP.)

Since then, I have installed the LILO boot loader onto 20 Windows terminals. At
startup, the student chooses Windows (booted locally) or LTSP, which runs on the
server. There is NO impact on the existing Windows 98 setup, nobody is forced
to use Linux but I've installed a lot of useful software like Scribus, Gimp, etc
which they don't have available under Windows. The idea is to make Linux
irresistable.

With the above, our entire cost was the server. I have script files, config
files and details available if anyone is interested in duplicating our setup.

Cheers
Simon
