Dear All,

I am sure you must have heard about the One Laptop per Child
(http://www.laptop.org/ ) . If you are not in the US or Canada, you can
order the machines at a price which goes down with quantity. Read the
details at http://laptopfoundation.org/participate/givemany.shtml .
The minimum quantity is a 100 and the price varies as below:
Give 100+ :$299 per laptop
Give 1000+: $249 per laptop
Give 10,000+: $199 per laptop

In most my conversations, I have found that people are not comfortable
ordering 100 straight away. So, some friends and I have created a portal
where you could place a pin on the the map stating your requirement. If
enough groups from an area place the pins, you could place a collective
order.

Please feel free to use http://www.classgrid.com/laptop , and spread the
word to others you know are interested.

Kind Regards,
Ajay

Hi Fred and all..

We at Janastu have started working on:
  http://janastu.org/school

A project that aims to enable school teachers to perform the school
information management. We are working with CHIREC, Hyderabad to start.

Check out http://www.janastu.org/school/SchoolProject.html

Building proper backend support so the following can happen, in order
to ensure that the staff trusts the system enough to use it will be a
significant part of the project.

1) A flexible teacher/staff friendly "module creator" utility that
will help teachers in a school create the module for their needs. Say,
Student information management module that works with English class
grades management module done by the English teacher for her needs.

2) A tamper detection backend.

3) A reasonably friendly UI for the teachers for the everyday use and
maintenance.

Wanted to mention this and to see if this might be interesting for the
BOF discussion.

For the upcoming (at the time of writing, October 2007)
FOSS.in conference in December 2007 in Bangalore, Vivek
Khurana <hiddenharmony@...> proposed a BoF (birds of
the feather) session for FOSS developers "from schools and
colleges i.e those who are pursuing some degree as well as
working for FOSS.

Said Vivek in a posting to the FOSS.in list: "You could be
coding, testing, bug fixing, managing release or whatever....
Come and talk about your project and your contribution. As I
am not a student, I am not eligible for the BoF, so I request
some student developer to take the role of organizing the
BoF. Why I am proposing this BoF? Because I know for sure
that these lazy school kids wont move by a millimeter unless
someone kicks them in right place."

Thanks guys for your positive responses. You know my weaknesses (lack
of technical skills) and strength (ability to collate information) in
this field. Need a lot of help from the techies, and some prior
planning, so that we all could get the most of later face-to-face
interaction.

So would it be apt if those of us intrested sign-up at some relevant
network [1] and share ideas there more intensively before we meet up
at the proposed BoF, assuming it happens?

Also, kindly note that the proposal is for a FOSS-in-schools BOF.
There's space for others to propose BOFs on FOSS-in-college or
FOSS-in-engineering-education. My feeling is that we in India need to
specifically focus on each of these sectors, so that we could move
from generalities to specifics. I'm putting together a paper on this
topic currently, and am pleasantly surprised with the amount of
details that exist on what has already been done. We have a lot to
learn from one another. I'll share what I come up with the rest of
those who show an interest. Rgds, FN

Hi Fredrick,
You can check out "squeak" at squeakland.org
I have the mac version but it says linux is supported.

Alice from Carnegie Mellon is a great sw for learning
programming in 3d.

The artice is good thought IMHO it is a bit too long
and gets lost. What is the core strength of FLOSS in
school. Is it for classes, for students, for office
use, for teachers ?

I think if it is for children it needs to supplement
the syllabus that they learn in class. So the list of
sw needs to be categorized accd to grades and then it
looks impressive.

Scope, General. Slides, Click to download. FOSS tools in
primary schools. This talk is aimed at FOSS enthusiasts
promoting its adoption in their local community,
particularly in primary education. It presents the
experience of deploying a FOSS desktop in a small public
primary school in Bangalore. It presents the initial
approach for FOSS deployment, the steps which worked and
those that didnt in getting the teachers in the school to
use FOSS desktop and tools like KDE, Kile and LaTeX to
enhance the quality of teaching and integrate a PC into
  daily sessions in the school.

In India, most deployments of computers in primary schools
use canned 'games' software on PCs to teach students or
expect teachers to use office automation software. For
already overburdened primary class teachers, PCs became
just another distraction. In a grassroots experiment, a
FOSS desktop was offered to a small public school in
Bangalore to use it for any task of their choice. The
teachers had no prior experience with computers or software
and their medium of instruction was Kannada. Two teachers
in the school chose to automate preparation of term
question papers in Kannada and English as this was a
recurring and time-consuming manual process. The desktop
was provisioned with KDE, Kile and LaTeX (with Kannada
types and styles) but not localized in Kannada. Starting
from scratch, the teachers took over 100 hours to learn to
use the tools and complete the first set of
publication-ready term papers for classes I through IV. The
second cycle took them less than 20 hours and they continue
to improve on their time. The FOSS desktop has empowered
the teachers to generate their own content quickly and
easily without compromising quality. The system has worked
without a single crash/breakdown over eighteen months of
  use by curious young children.

Prajña : Cognizant FLOSS Corps
I have started a new group (so far unofficial) in Cognizant which
endeavours to help in the upliftment of the rural & urban poor of
India by giving them a digital edge achieved by implementing &
teaching FLOSS based solutions in academic institutions & self help
communities.

We are Prajña : Cognizant FLOSS Corps.

Prajña, in Sanskrit, stands for wisdom, intelligence which we try to
impart & also comes closest to the translation of Cognizant. I plan to
use swan as a mascot. Swan is closest to Hamsa, Saraswati's vahan &
represents wisdom & knowledge too :)

It is still in its infancy (only two days old) and not much has been
setup, except for securing the help of some people who have promised
help in their personal capacities. I am putting a mind map here on my
plans for this group & solicit your feedback & suggestions.

The idea for starting such a group got seeded in my mind while I was
researching for the previous post of mine called " Satyagrah for
Swatantra Software in India". The blog has also been posted in
Cognizant's internal blogs (ch1blogs, short for Channel One Blogs)
where I maintain a blog called FLOSS Bites. I was very much impressed
& driven by the recent efforts of ilug-cal to implement LTSP in rural
schools & teaching the MLAs (I have mentioned it in my post too).

My idea got watered further during my various discussions on these
internal blogs wrt Charity in Hinduism & Cognizant's Corporate Social
Responsibility.
My driving force to start this group is my belief that the greatest
charity we can do in this day & age is to give somebody a job or teach
a job, so that they are self sufficient as well as strive to provide
employment to others too. And this self sufficiency is what will
provide actual freedom to all our poor. No wonder then that I choose
only Swatantra software (FLOSS).

Also, I will not consider using proprietary solutions even if given
away for free. This might seem extremist but that's my belief.
Teaching people proprietary solutions for free is a sure fire way to
get the people hooked onto a solution which they will not be able to
afford once they get addicted. This is pretty much like getting people
addicted to drugs for free & then making them pay heavily.

And finally, seeking all your blessings & well wishes too.

Indian agency to deploy Linux in schools
ELCOT, whic provides IT services to the south Indian state of Tamil
Nadu, has already migrated its own infrastructure from Windows to Suse
Linux Enterprise

By John Ribeiro, IDG News Service
August 07, 2007

The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) is deploying Suse
Linux Enterprise across 30,000 desktops and 1,880 servers in schools
in southern India.

» Back to special report: LinuxWorld 2007: Open source goes mainstream

ELCOT is a government-owned agency that provides IT services to Tamil
Nadu, a state in southern India. It has already migrated its own IT
infrastructure from Microsoft's Windows operating system to Suse Linux
Enterprise Server and Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop, Novell said
Tuesday.

ELCOT said in January that its IT projects in Tamil Nadu will be
deployed around open-source software, including Linux. ELCOT decided
in favor of open-source software because it costs less than
proprietary software, said C. Umashankar, managing director of ELCOT,
in an interview in January. Open-source software is also easier to
operate and has better security, he added.

ELCOT has worked with teachers to design a preloaded set of
applications for the 30,000 new PCs.

A number of Indian organizations have adopted Linux. In another south
Indian state, Kerala, the communist government of the state has said
that it will promote open-source software.

The Indian federal government has, however, not taken sides in favor
of either Linux or proprietary software. Microsoft is working with
some states to train teachers to use computers running Windows.

As more companies in India and abroad are starting to use Linux,
familiarity with Linux will help students get jobs, ELCOT said.

Gora Mohanty gora at sarai.net
Fri May 25 13:34:49 CEST 2007

Hello all,
Below is an invitation for proposals for the RGF-Sarai
CSDS programme for short-term FLOSS fellowships. Please feel
to circulate this far and wide. The deadline for submission
of proposals is the 25th of June. Please feel free to address
any queries with regards to this to floss at sarai.net.

Regards,
Gora
--------------------------------------------------------------
                        Call for proposals:
              RGF-Sarai, CSDS, short-term FLOSS fellowships

1 Introduction

The Sarai programme of the Centre for the Study of Developing
Societies, Delhi (http://www.sarai. net) is pleased to
announce fellowships for projects related to Free/Libre and
Open Source Software (FLOSS) activities. This year, we have
partnered with the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF) who are
providing support for work in the specific area of computing,
and localisation in five Indian languages, namely, Assamese,
Hindi, Kashmiri, Oriya, and Urdu. We also invite proposals
from projects in other FLOSS areas, especially ones that are
relevant to educational, social, and community needs. Any
project that meets the criteria given below is eligible for
the fellowships, but we are particularly interested in:

o Indian language computing, including work on fonts,
       rendering, locales, input methods, spell-checking,
etc., as well as in advanced technologies like OCR,
       handwriting recognition, and speech-to-text.

o Localisation into Indian languages of user interfaces,
and translation of help documents for FLOSS
       applications.

o In the interest of sustained development, we would
like to see the enhancement of, and extensions for
projects funded as part of past Sarai FLOSS
fellowships. In particular, we draw attention to
       NewsRack (http://newsrack.in), Hindawi
       (http://www.indicybers.com), and ApnaOpus
       (http://apnaopus.var.cc).

o Documentation for users of FLOSS tools, particularly
in the area of Indian language computing. The
production of video tutorials would be welcome.

o Development of graphics, multimedia, and publishing
tools. This would include applications for audio/video
       editing, animation, and desktop publishing.
Enhancement of existing FLOSS tools is especially
       encouraged.

o Putting together, distributing, and supporting a
complete Indian language distribution, using FLOSS
       operating systems, and tools.

o Collaboration software, and groupware solutions.

o Writing Linux device drivers, and front-ends for
common hardware, such as wireless cards, graphics
       cards, scanners, and printers.

The other significant difference from past practice is that
we will be asking for more of a collaborative approach from
the fellows, both among one another, and with people at
Sarai. The collaboration need not be in the actual
development, but can consist of an ongoing conversation about
one's work, its direction, and current status. While this
has been an implicit expectation in the past, this time we
are making the requirement explicit. The exact details of
these will be worked out with the selected fellows, but will
include things like discussions over IRC, email, and postings
on the Sarai Project Resource Centre (PRC) mailing list.
Fellows will also be asked to prepare a timeline for the
projects, with intermediate milestones, and will be expected
to adhere to them.

2 Applying for the fellowships

We invite students, developers, researchers, and
practitioners interested in the FLOSS arena to apply for the
fellowships. While there is no prescribed format for the
applications, we expect them to be in sufficient detail for a
reviewer to sensibly evaluate them. Attention to details,
such as a plan of work that addresses what is possible to
accomplish within the limited project period, a projection of
how the work might be continued after that, and a discussion
of the possible impact of the project, is strongly
recommended. In particular, we will look favourably on
projects aimed at eventual deployment, rather than
development per se. Please mail your application, along with
a resume, to floss at sarai.net , with the subject line of
"RGF-Sarai FLOSS fellowships". As this information is
intended to be public, also subscribe to the PRC mailing list
at https://mail.sarai.net/mailman/listinfo/prc, and post a
copy there, failing which your final proposal will be
forwarded there by one of us. Enquiries are invited at floss
at sarai.net , and on the PRC list, including questions on
how to frame proposals. The last date of submission is
midnight IST on Sun., June 25th, 2007. The projects will run
for a total of about six months, with a final workshop to be
held at Sarai, CSDS, Delhi, where the fellows will be
expected to present a summary of their work. Besides this, as
part of our engagement with the RGF, we will be holding
workshops in regional locations, and the FLOSS fellows will
be asked to be present at events local to them. The total
amount of the fellowship will be Rs. 70, 000.

3 Conditions

Applicants should have a valid bank account in any bank
operating in India. These are support grants, and the fellows
are free to pursue their primary occupations in parallel, as
long as they keep working on proposed projects. The fellows
must be willing to make a release of their final work under
any open-source licence approved by the Open Source
Initiative (OSI). Please see under
http://www.opensource.org/licenses for a complete list.
Proposals from teams, partnerships, collectives, and faculty
on the behalf of a group of students are welcome, so long as
the grant amount is administered by a single individual, and
the funds are deposited in a single bank account in the name
of an individual.

Hi,

The European-Union funded FLOSSWorld project aims to enhance the level
of global awareness related to FLOSS among various sectors like
industry, academia, government, etc. As a part of this project, we
plan to conduct a series of surveys related to FLOSS, to understand
the impact and usage of FLOSS among developers, employers, government
officials and educational institutions across India. Please refer to
www.flossworld.org for more details about the FLOSSWorld project.

We are in the process of collecting contacts in order to circulate the
survey questionnaires. We have collected a number of contact addresses
from the internet and from references obtained from our regional
workshop participants.Give your experience in FOSS related
activities. We seek your help in reaching out to as many as people as
possible.Could you please mail back any contacts you know of among the
developer, e-government, academia and employer community, to whom, you
think, we can send the survey questionnaires. Also, let us know if you
would like to partiicpate in the survey.

Thanks and Regards,
FLOSSWorld team, C-DAC Mumbai

Do you intend to build a complete OS from scratch or just modify an
existing one?

Customize it for a specefic task..

My college project was a directly bootable video/mp3/Audio CD! The OS
size was below 10 MB including ISOLinux bootLoader, The Kernel and the
Initrd. You can try something else.

As the OS was meant only for one and only one task - playing videos,
It was small and other serices were all removed and the videplayer was
put in startup scripts with proper command line ..

The advantage was if you are using the video to present something,
1) you had the OS, Drivers, pretested Codec set with you on the CD
itself.. No tension if the PC they provide you will have them. Their
hard disk crashed just before you reached? No problem!
2) No human internvention except inserting the cdrom. You could go to
any conference place and just boot the cd and let it play.
No hazzles of waiting for a heavy OS to load, Go to start menu,
run media player, Play the disk.. just boot!
How much more userfrinedly do you need it? :-)

In 30 seconds flat from the time I switch on my cranky old 500mhz 64
MB RAM machine, the video was playing.. .. to say that it did not even
have a hard disk is another thing :-)

> 4. It should be complete in 20 days
My project completed in 0 days.. I had already done it ;-D .
Seriously, It had taken me 3 months to do with half an hour per day
dedicated to it.

You can try this : A Bare minimum Linux with XPDF, Xvesa and their
dependencies. It should boot up and Display in full screen the first
PDF it finds in a predetermined Directory.

If you want to modify it, all you would need to do is, change the PDF
in the directory with a new one and burn the CD :-).

Do google searches for
Movix
Knoppix
Xvesa
xpdf, evince

If the lecturer still says there should be the college name somewhere,
Just create a nice PDF presentation about your college in Open
Office/LaTeX and use that as the sample presentation.

Finding alternatives in developing software
by Martin C Brown

Comparing free development tools and libraries with proprietary ones

Developing software within the free software model can be achieved with
all sorts of different tools, but choosing the right tools can make a
big difference to the success of your project. Even if you are
developing a proprietary solution, there are benefits to using free
software tools to achieve it. But what free software tools are
available? In this article I’m going to look at the development tools
available, from languages and libraries to development environments, as
well as examining the issues surrounding the use of free software tools
by comparison to their proprietary equivalents.

The social implications of free software
by Frederick Noronha

In the not-so-affluent world in particular, proprietary software
deserves to be skipped

If you're new to it, free software appears to be tough to shift to. It
also tends to be supported by a smaller pool of techies, and has
something of a steep initial learning-curve. So why shift at all? In any
case, you can easily make do with illegally-copied proprietary software¦
right?
