Dear All
If I want to run a school totally using FOSS, can I
do. I want to automate the school to the maximum. We
are going to start a school from next year. I will
like people to help us in this direction. This school
then can be a example for others.

Depending on the feedback I got, I had alloted
Rs15,000 for setting up and conducting a 15 day on
site class.

Please tell me an attractive proposal that will
attract people in LUG and I will bring it to the
board's notice.

I hope that there is no confusion that since it is a
"non profit", only hw would be paid for. Everyone's
time would be compensated for. Similarly once anyone
commits, I would epxect the same level of comitment
from the individual.

It has been our experience in other projects that this
ensures long lasting quality effort.

If the schools have Higher education, like 9th/10th std students, 10+2 etc, some smart people from there could be trained as well, Till the teachers catch on. If the teachers are understanding enough, it wont cause ego problems.. What say???

Hello

I feel its a great opportunity to train some hardware support people
on LINUX and LTSP near the school.

The support people could be utilized for any other similar projects in
the future.

If a small advt is given, definitely a lot hardware people will come
forward.

Definitely many members of LUG bangalore may come forward to train the
hardware people,as pointed out by Mr.Jayasimha makineni.

Hi Sanjeev !

I have installed LTSP, Lessdisks and Skolelinux at my work place - Ma Foi
Academy, Chennai.
I am from Hyderabad but I will be very glad to help you in the weekend and
holidays.
I do not mind traveling to Bangalore.
I may not be able to train people for 15 continuous days but can help you select
a local vendor in Bangalore if required.

I am also sure that I can pull in many linux user group members of Hyderabad and
Bangalore to help you achieve your goal.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

cheers,

Hi,
I am working for a non profit organization in US.
Recently we received a grant of $10K to open a
computer lab in a school in Blore. I presented the
attached proposal. Please send comments regarding it
and I will correct it.

After a lengthy discussion the problem boiled down to
support. I could not find any local company/person in
Blore which can support it. I found a sw vendor from
Kannur that had done this.
But every one was unsure how out of station support
would work.

Does anyone know of any person that can provide
support for LTSP on a need basis. I could then propose
that we buy the hw from reputed vendor with warranty
and be left only with support for LTSP from private
individual on a per need basis. Can this be done
remotely ?
Does the plan sound feasible ?

running Linux

Car hire firm Europcar International has migrated thousands of PCs
across Europe from Windows fat clients to Linux thin clients, lowering
both its hardware and maintenance costs.

The car hire firm has saved on hardware and maintenance costs by
migrating its 1,500 stations to thin clients running Linux, but Stefan
Ostrowski, the CIO of Europcar, said that while migrating to Linux
thin clients has saved them money, but it would not have been as cost
effective for them to migrate fat clients to Linux.

No, 'advocacy' is entirely diffrent from selling.

And this selling is selling the idea and the value, not necessarily for money.

I'll tell you a story. This, you should be able to find in the cronicles of
some tech history books/sites.

There was a company called Zilog. Constituted by a break away group of Intel
engineers, who had designed 8080, an 8 bit processor. Zilog designed Z80, a
hugely successful 8 bit processor, on which later, CP/M (a very basic OS) was
standardised.

Zilog also produced Z8000, a 16 bit processor, which was technologically far
superior to 8086. BTW I've used both, along with 68000 (Motorola) and some
wonderful 8 bit ones 1602, 6800, 6502, Z80, 8080/5 etc for designing various
control/processing systems.

However, IBM was impressed with Intel's marketing and went on to design the
IBM PC using 8086/88. Rest is history. Not to mention that the Mars buggy was
run by Z80, where technology was of paramount importance.

The moral of the story is: marketing sells not the technology. Thats the
reason M$ sells and not Linux. The sooner it is understood, better it is.

Lets sell Linux and not wait for the events to lead the way. That way may
never come.

Hello

I have been planning that kind of a thing for a long time and have
been telling one of the hardware guys I know in Hyderabad to go for
it. But It is a slow process. There is a
big Computer sales and training business opportunity using Linux and
thin client solutions to schools and colleges (It would also be a
social service kind of thing because the software is free, hardware
cost least,administrator cost could be zero,downtime minimum,virus
threats nil etc,etc.).

And once the Linux lab is setup, it doesnt want much supervision. The
support organization should standardise on the hardware front like
using same components in all the clients, and also all the servers
should have same components so that school and himself will have less
work on the support front.

Kerala is ahead in all these things like they have setup 100 Linux
support centers across the state. Hope other states wakeup.

Cheers

Hello Arjun

It will be broken naturally when the time of Linux comes.

There is Engineering education where they dont force to use Windows
for  C/C++ programming, Java etc.

But nobody uses Linux to do these things in Engineering colleges
(There may be only few colleges who are doing so).

There is also syllabus in Engineering where Word , Excel , powerpoint
is part of the introductory computer syllabus in First year.

Engineering colleges and professional institutes shamelessly use
pirated software (It may be true for CBSE and other schools also).

If the Universities and Government enforce the rule of legal software
usage, these institutes will have no other option but to use Linux.

When Microsoft comes in search of their baby, we have no other option
but to give up the baby and also pay fines (We may have to learn how
many zeros are there in a million) . The fines will be so huge all
the institutes would go bankrupt paying the fine and close shutters.

Everybody is saying, no such thing will happen soon. Yes it will not
happen soon because the number computers in India are only around 1
Crore. Let it multiply to 5 to 10 crores, which may happen quickly if
the prices of computers comes to around Rs.10 thousand. (Who would
have imagined mobile phones will reach more than 4.5 crores in such a
small time span exceeding the land line phones ?).

We may have to wait a little more longer may be 2 to 4 years when
dozens of countries, 100s of big companies rush to use Linux in a
large scale . Then there will be a great conversion boom similar to
Y2K projects. It may be called W2k+8 bug or the big MSW bug. The bug
is not easy to remove. More than 90 percent of the computers would
have to be completely cleaned of this bug.

People who have very few computers like India (< 1%) better not
install the bug on new computers. Otherwise India may have to spend
Billions of Dollars as the USA did for becoming stingy for 2 digits of
a year as in Y2K bug.

Cheers
Herald.

How about creating a sales kit (sans cost of sales) for promoting Linux in
Schools? Of course, this has to be an end to end solution promotion. ie
should also include attaching a hardware and Li support organisation.

The problem is that CBSE forces schools to use Windows and other prop
software.

Can any one break that?

Hello Laxman

I agree with you totally.

We have to keep trying. Otherwise I would have stopped maintaining
this group
long back.

Schools are the right place to promote Linux. Engineering Colleges are
too difficult for promoting Linux. It is because they are already
habituated to Windows.

Thats why I started this group to baptize the school children with
Linux rather than trying to convert them to Linux when they are in
College. Conversion to Linux is a very controvertial topic and is very
difficult to do, just like religious conversions.

I am really happy that at least 3 schools are using Linux in Hyderabad
(But was hoping for at least 10 in 1 year) . Also happy that I was able to
compile a Free Software CD full of Educational softwares and the like
for schools and colleges, which was a requirement & result of Vande
Mataram high school implementation.

Its called Linvertor.

Cheers

Dear Herald
Any change is difficult. We should be feel good that
at least 3 schools are using Linux. At IIM, Ahmedabad
we also have been trying to promote FOSS in many
schools. Would you believe that more than 150
principals of top schools of the country have been
given presentations and CDs, but not much
breakthroughs. I believe we should keep trying and at
one point it is going to take off. Then nothing can
stop it. We also must understand why schools are not
going for FOSS inspite of so much advantages and try
to work upon them.

All the best. Laxman

Hello friends

By chance i just saw the Date of linux_schools creation.

We have turned exactly 1 year today.

In one year I could implement k12ltsp in only 1 school.

2 more schools are using K12LTSP with the help of Vikram.

So in total 3 schools using GNU/Linux in Hyderabad.

Its a very pathetic statistics. During the boom time, 40% of H1B
holders from India were from AP. But in Linux usage there hardly any
awareness.

If the members put some efforts definitely within the next year, shall
we expect at least 25 schools using GNU/LINUX ???

When I gave a k12ltsp demo at ilughyd around June last year, many
people came forward to do something to spread Linux in schools . But
nothing happened in 1 years time.

There are thousands of private schools out there .

Cheers
Herald.
