Hi Zabil,

Thanks a lot for the CD.

I tried it out and am positively impressed by the
simple and elegant interface.
My system at home is a 500MHz PIII. Susie and FC3 are
quite slow on this and I always thought the problem
was with the old system and the KDE/GNOME desktops
which hog resources.

Ubuntu proved that my assumptions were wrong.

I need to add a few other educational softwares though
for our purpose.

cheers
Shiv

Hello Sanjeev,
Well things are fine at ATMS.
I will be showing Shiv around the place and give a brief about the
installation and the set up.
It is after the summer vacation that Linux will be put through the
grind at ATMS.
Meanhwile here are other alternatives to thin client solutions that I
stumbled across on the web

http://pxes.sourceforge.net/
http://thinstation.sourceforge.net/

Might be of interest to people who would be looking for an ATMS like
solution.

Hello Shiv,
You should visit ATMS and take a look at the setup.
There are a total of 5 disless clients with 1 P4
server with 1GB ram. There are 4 legacy windows mc's
that can serve as diskless client with floppy boot.
Please get the directions from Zabil.

How are you doing Zabil ? I got swamped after the
month in Blore and then had tax returns on April 15th.

I have received some reports from ATMS that the kids
dont have any problem with linux.

Hello Shiv,
I have been involved with Sanjeev for setting up LTSP at Atma Shree. I
will be be available after 24th of this month and dueing that I can show
you the set up at the school.
If you have existing machines with hard disks that you need to convert
to linux then I do not suggest that you go for LTSP because the system
requirement of K12LTSP (The ready made LTSP and educational
distribution) is quite high. On an optimum you would require more than
256 MB RAM on the machines.
The best would be to go for a Debian based distribution where you can
install the base and then keep on adding packages.

The base installation will run ok on a 68 MB RAM machine.

The best part about a Debian distribution is ability to upgrade quite
easily and a amazing range of software support.

I can give you cd's of Ubuntu Hoary (http://www.ubuntulinux.org) CD's
My contact number is
9845 171 484

Thank you,
Zabil

Hi ppl,

I am new to this list. I am currently working towards setting up a
computer lab for a govt primary school at Madivala(Bangalore). The
audience is students in class 5, 6 & 7.
I went through the previous posts in the list and found the message

one of his earlier posts would pretty much apply to me as well.

The following needs to be done (during the current summer vacation)
* Putting a curriculum in place
* Putting the right set of softwares resources
* Set up the LAN
Subsequently a set teachers and students are to be trained.

Does any one have a distro customized for this purpose which I can
borrow. Since you guys already have the implementation experience, Can
one of you help me with the same. Laxman from Ahmedabad has mentioned
about a set of 4 CDs that he has just for such purpose. Laxman, can
you please respond to this mail.

I have a set of 10 systems (P-II & P-III).

Also LTSP is something new to me. Am going through the details on the
web. The systems I have already have hard disks. In such a case would
it still be better to go the LTSP way?
I would like to visit "Atma shree education association" sometime to
have a look.

thanks & cheers

Subject: [IIEP] Open Source Tool: eXe Release 0.3

Hi everyone,

Great links from Jean-Claude - worth reading.

eXe is a desktop authoring environment to assist teachers and academics in
the publishing of web content for e-learning without the need to become
proficient in HTML or XML mark-up. The eXe is an open source software
project funded by the Tertiary Education Commission of New Zealand. When
completed, it will be freely available for every teacher, lecturer and
academic to use in support of their e-learning activities. This is an early
release of the eXe project. It is intended to elicit feedback from the user
community. We expect file formats will change, so don't invest a lot of
time in creating a large package with this release.

Please download eXe and let us know what you think. Later today there will
be an online form where you can give us feedback. This is a great way for
folk who are not programmers or developers to participate in an open source
project.

You will find the survey form at: http://cfdl.auckland.ac.nz/exe_survey
(NOTE - this not currently running but will be in 6 hours time)

For more information please read the brochure attached, or visit the project
website at: http://exe.cfdl.auckland.ac.nz

Yes, of course.

Not only a wide range of FLOSS software is available
for the schools, you can even get technical help from
various GNU/Linux User Groups around india. Please go
thro archives of the linux_schools user groups and
K12linux.org site is best place to start.

Dear All
If I want to run a school totally using FOSS, can I
do. I want to automate the school to the maximum. We
are going to start a school from next year. I will
like people to help us in this direction. This school
then can be a example for others.

Depending on the feedback I got, I had alloted
Rs15,000 for setting up and conducting a 15 day on
site class.

Please tell me an attractive proposal that will
attract people in LUG and I will bring it to the
board's notice.

I hope that there is no confusion that since it is a
"non profit", only hw would be paid for. Everyone's
time would be compensated for. Similarly once anyone
commits, I would epxect the same level of comitment
from the individual.

It has been our experience in other projects that this
ensures long lasting quality effort.

If the schools have Higher education, like 9th/10th std students, 10+2 etc, some smart people from there could be trained as well, Till the teachers catch on. If the teachers are understanding enough, it wont cause ego problems.. What say???

Hello

I feel its a great opportunity to train some hardware support people
on LINUX and LTSP near the school.

The support people could be utilized for any other similar projects in
the future.

If a small advt is given, definitely a lot hardware people will come
forward.

Definitely many members of LUG bangalore may come forward to train the
hardware people,as pointed out by Mr.Jayasimha makineni.

Hi Sanjeev !

I have installed LTSP, Lessdisks and Skolelinux at my work place - Ma Foi
Academy, Chennai.
I am from Hyderabad but I will be very glad to help you in the weekend and
holidays.
I do not mind traveling to Bangalore.
I may not be able to train people for 15 continuous days but can help you select
a local vendor in Bangalore if required.

I am also sure that I can pull in many linux user group members of Hyderabad and
Bangalore to help you achieve your goal.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

cheers,

Hi,
I am working for a non profit organization in US.
Recently we received a grant of $10K to open a
computer lab in a school in Blore. I presented the
attached proposal. Please send comments regarding it
and I will correct it.

After a lengthy discussion the problem boiled down to
support. I could not find any local company/person in
Blore which can support it. I found a sw vendor from
Kannur that had done this.
But every one was unsure how out of station support
would work.

Does anyone know of any person that can provide
support for LTSP on a need basis. I could then propose
that we buy the hw from reputed vendor with warranty
and be left only with support for LTSP from private
individual on a per need basis. Can this be done
remotely ?
Does the plan sound feasible ?

The car hire firm says its has cut hardware and maintenance costs
dramatically by migrating 1,500 rental stations to thin clients
running Linux

Car hire firm Europcar International has migrated thousands of PCs
across Europe from Windows fat clients to Linux thin clients, lowering
both its hardware and maintenance costs.

The car hire firm has saved on hardware and maintenance costs by
migrating its 1,500 stations to thin clients running Linux, but Stefan
Ostrowski, the CIO of Europcar, said that while migrating to Linux
thin clients has saved them money, but it would not have been as cost
effective for them to migrate fat clients to Linux.

No, 'advocacy' is entirely diffrent from selling.

And this selling is selling the idea and the value, not necessarily for money.
