Developing software within the free software model can be achieved with
all sorts of different tools, but choosing the right tools can make a
big difference to the success of your project. Even if you are
developing a proprietary solution, there are benefits to using free
software tools to achieve it. But what free software tools are
available? In this article I’m going to look at the development tools
available, from languages and libraries to development environments, as
well as examining the issues surrounding the use of free software tools
by comparison to their proprietary equivalents.

The social implications of free software

deserves to be skipped
If you're new to it, free software appears to be tough to shift to. It
also tends to be supported by a smaller pool of techies, and has
something of a steep initial learning-curve. So why shift at all? In any
case, you can easily make do with illegally-copied proprietary software¦
right?

Hello Shiva,
Kde programs can also be installed in linux.
Ubuntu supports KDE in fact they have a complete KDE base distribution
called Kubuntu.
To install the software you want if you have an internet connection you
can use "Synaptic" which is available in the administration menu. Ubuntu
repositories have all the software that you saw at Atma Shree.
If you do not have an internet connection you can download the package
you want from the Ubuntu repositories seperately and then use dpkg to
install them locally.
The package format for Ubuntu is .deb as it is based on debian. It is
fairly easy to install to install deb packages.

Open Admin for Schools is a freely available web based school administration
program.
It now includes an online gradebook, and allows parent viewing of attendance,
report cards, and gradebook, if desired.
This is being developed by both the Battlefords School Division and the North
West Catholic School Division in Saskatchewan, Canada
Open Admin for Schools 1.80 is now available for download from:
http://richtech.ca/openadmin
It contains updates including:
a) complete scripting rewrite to support a single configuration file per
school.
b) new class enrollment journal system to track class enrollments and
withdrawals.
c) many updates to the Saskatchewan SDS scripts including a new debug mode, and
new class enrollment update script and improvements in the query functions.
d) early alpha support for the postgreSQL database as an alternative to MySQL.
(with the assistance of David Bandel)
e) Gradebook updates to support single zip class export, subgroups for separate
term grades, other fixes.
f) Other fixes and improvements as outlined in the change log on the OA page.

Hi Zabil,
Thanks a lot for the CD.
I tried it out and am positively impressed by the
simple and elegant interface.
My system at home is a 500MHz PIII. Susie and FC3 are
quite slow on this and I always thought the problem
was with the old system and the KDE/GNOME desktops
which hog resources.
Ubuntu proved that my assumptions were wrong.
I need to add a few other educational softwares though
for our purpose.

Well things are fine at ATMS.
I will be showing Shiv around the place and give a brief about the
installation and the set up.
It is after the summer vacation that Linux will be put through the
grind at ATMS.
Meanhwile here are other alternatives to thin client solutions that I
stumbled across on the web

Hello Shiv,
I have been involved with Sanjeev for setting up LTSP at Atma Shree. I
will be be available after 24th of this month and dueing that I can show
you the set up at the school.
If you have existing machines with hard disks that you need to convert
to linux then I do not suggest that you go for LTSP because the system
requirement of K12LTSP (The ready made LTSP and educational
distribution) is quite high. On an optimum you would require more than
256 MB RAM on the machines.
The best would be to go for a Debian based distribution where you can
install the base and then keep on adding packages.
The base installation will run ok on a 68 MB RAM machine.

time would be compensated for. Similarly once anyone
commits, I would epxect the same level of comitment
from the individual.
It has been our experience in other projects that this
ensures long lasting quality effort.

If the schools have Higher education, like 9th/10th std students, 10+2 etc, some smart people from there could be trained as well, Till the teachers catch on. If the teachers are understanding enough, it wont cause ego problems.. What say???

I am from Hyderabad but I will be very glad to help you in the weekend and
