NYC is the youth wing of the Nationalist Congress party of India. We
are a broad, diverse network of young activists who share a vision
of golden Indian era. Nationalism is one of the most misused words
in the Indian politics. Contrary to misrepresentations, nationalism
is not about fundamentalism (Hindu/Islam Christianity or stateism

nationalist we will fight against these & will work towards

Excellent sir,

Iam totally impressed by you talk.I hope that this word reaches to all those
deff Indians who blindly vote.Untill late even I was thinking the same and has
finally put a petiton to all parliment members regarding elections.well your
article is truely awsome and I suggest you strongly write this as a colummn and
send it to tehelka news papaer.

I would also like to get to your notice that more than 3/4th of India
population fo not rea;;y know that government is giving us the services and thta
we are paying them through taxes many of them think that the goverment is a
ruling party and it has every authority to take the counrty by its own will. The
concept of by the people, for the people and Of the people os washed away
totally.

Respected sir,
I wanted to reach as many people as possible and spread this news. I thought
that it is important during this election period to just remember certain things
to the voters as well as the parliment members

.I put this petition on jantaraj targeting all the parliment members..Please
have a look and support the same by signing the petiotion.Any suggestions are
most welcome

GUWAHATI: Police in Meghalaya are investigating allegations that
former Lok Sabha speaker P A Sangma had links with an outlawed
separatist group, officials said Friday.

Sangma-terrorist links are being probed

"Police are investigating the possible links between Sangma and the
group. The law will not spare anyone irrespective of political
stature, and if the charges are proved Sangma could be arrested,"
Meghalaya Chief Minister D D Lapang said.

"We will not tolerate anyone trying to hobnob with rebel groups
indulging in all kinds of terrorist and criminal activities in the
state," he added.

The warning comes amid a statement by the outlawed Achik National
Volunteers' Council (ANVC) appealing to voters to support Sangma and
his Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in the local council elections
scheduled for next week.

"Sangma is playing a very important role in leading the peace talks
and it is in the hands of the Achiks (local people) to make him and
his party stronger," said ANVC chairman Dilash Marak and general
secretary Wanding Marak.

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ MONDAY, FEBRUARY 02, 2004 03:03:39 AM ]

PUNE: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar on
Sunday alleged that Maharashtra was getting a step-motherly
treatment from the Union government in drought assistance and warned
that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will have to bear the
consequences in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Pawar made the allegation while addressing a rally of party workers
near the Ambedkar statue in Pimpri. In what was obviously a dress-
rehearsal of the election campaign, Pawar again came down heavily on
the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) 'feel good factor' slogan.

He urged party workers to be prepared for elections in the presence
of Pimpri-Chinchwad mayor Prakash Revale and NCP Pimpri-Chinchwad
unit chief Laxman Jagtap.

Pawar pointed out that chief minister Sushilkumar Shinde had
requested the Union government to give Rs 1,750 crore as drought
assistance, but the centre gave only Rs 50 crore. Andhra Pradesh, he
said, received a healthy assistance, to buttress his claim that
Maharashtra was receiving a step-motherly treatment.

Pawar pointed out that the Union government offered 2.81 lakh
tonnes of foodgrains for 11 drought-affected districts in the state,
while 40 lakh tonnes of foodgrain was given for nine districts in
Andhra Pradesh.

Even as Maharashtra continued to reel under drought, vast quantity
of foodgrains was rotting rotting in Delhi and Punjab , he charged.

He observed that even as industries like Garware, Ispat and
Hindustan Antibiotics were on the brink of closure and drought had
gripped the state, the BJP was coining slogans like 'feel good
factor'.
Pawar clarified that his party will forge an alliance with like-
minded parties in the Lok Sabha elections and stated that it was
time to have a change in leadership at the Centre.

He urged party workers to be prepared to teach a lesson to the
BJP,which has made corruption, a usual practice. Pawar assured that
he will do his best to free the Pimpri-Chinchwad area from slums and
try to bale out Hindustan Antibiotics Ltd.

VADODARA: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar's
decision to align with the Congress for the upcoming Lok Sabha
elections has not augured well with some NCP leaders in Gujarat as
well. NCP general secretary Bharat Pathak resigned on Sunday stating
ideological differences with Pawar as well as the Gujarat unit
president and former Gujarat finance minister Sanat Mehta. Although
Mehta has not accepted the resignation, Pathak says he has made up
his mind and will not withdraw.

"I have not made up my mind on where to go from here, but I will be
meeting P A Sangma of the North-East People's Front on Tuesday and
then decide if I want to join him," Pathak said here on Sunday. "I
can't be part of an alliance which has Sonia Gandhi, a foreigner, as
a possible prime ministerial candidate."

Pathak has been Mehta's long-time aide since his labour union days.
He says that although none of his supporters and friends have
resigned as yet, they will after he joins hands with Sangma.

"At least 40 per cent of the NCP national council members will
support me if I decide to join hands with Sangma," he claimed.

Observers feel that the NCP splitting in Gujarat may not augur well
for the Congress too. In the 2002 Assembly elections, NCP had not
won a single seat but had eaten into the Congress' vote pie on more
than 15 crucial seats. In Morvi, for instance, the BJP won by around
2,000 votes. The NCP finished third behind the Congress but got
nearly 1,600 votes.

In Gondal, the NCP candidate lost to BJP by a little more than
15,000 votes. At Wankaner, the Congress polled 10 per cent less votes
than the BJP and lost while NCP took away 18 per cent of the votes.

"I accept that if the Congress and the NCP join hands they can give
the BJP a tough fight in the upcoming Long Sabha elections," Pathak
says, adding, "But the Congress will not give us more than a couple
of seats to fight on in Gujarat which is not acceptable to me."

Mehta, on the other hand, said he has not accepted the resignation
and that he would not let Pathak leave the party.

India's government dissolved the lower house of parliament today
setting the stage for early elections, with the ruling Hindu-
nationalist coalition planning to cash in on recently improved
relations with rival Pakistan.

India's Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee immediately launched his
party's election campaign with a blistering attack on the main
opposition Congress party.

The election dates – some five months early – are expected to be
announced on Sunday by the independent Election Commission.

The balloting by hundreds of millions of voters in the world's
largest democracy will probably be staggered over six weeks. The
election is likely to begin in April.

Lauding the work done by his Hindu nationalist-led coalition in the
last five years, Vajpayee said his Bharatiya Janata Party
had "shattered the myth that only a Congress government could rule
the country".

Coalition governments have rarely lasted long in India's 56-year
history, which was governed for most of that time by the Congress,
which had been at the forefront of the movement for independence
from Britain in 1947.

Speaking in Hindi, Vajpayee said his government had "embarked on a
path of problem-solving, growth and prosperity".

Vajpayee's coalition was elected in 1998, but lost its parliamentary
majority when one of its member parties allied with Congress. The
coalition was re-elected in October 1999.

Vajpayee listed among his successes, the recent peace dialogue
initiated with neighbour and arch-rival Pakistan, and a negotiation
process to resolve a decades-old boundary dispute with China.

The government just this month began talks with moderate Kashmiri
separatist leaders to resolve the problem of India's northernmost
Jammu-Kashmir state, where an Islamic militant insurgency and Indian
security force operations have killed more than 65,000 people since
1989.

"However, we need some more time and the support of the people to
complete the task," Vajpayee said of Kashmir.

Vajpayee told a crowded public rally in New Delhi that his
government had pushed through extensive economic reforms, resulting
in an upswing in industrial production, infrastructure development
and export growth.

Earlier today, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam dissolved the Lok Sabha,
the 535-seat lower house of Parliament, at the request of Vajpayee's
Cabinet, which wants early elections to take advantage of the
economic boom and improving relations with Pakistan.

Kalam signed a proclamation to dissolve the Parliament, which could
have remained in session until September.

The Vajpayee government will serve as a caretaker administration
until a new government is formed after the elections.

Patil protests against govt. 'discrimination'

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 05, 2004 12:52:18 AM ]

MUMBAI: The Democratic Front (DF) government in Maharashtra has
decided to confront the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National
Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre.

State's home minister R.R. Patil will stage a dharna at Azad Maidan
on Wednesday as a part of the `atmasanman abhiyan' (selfrespect
campaign) launched by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to
protest against the Central government's alleged discrimination
against the state while allotting funds.

Patil, who also heads the state unit of the NCP, is unhappy with
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who has announced only Rs 40
crore towards drought relief while addressing a meeting at
Pandharpur recently. The state government had demanded Rs 1,712
crore and 10 lakhs tonnes of grains to tide over the drought
situation.

However, the Centre has so far given only two lakh tonnes of grains.
In fact, Mr Patil wanted the state government to return Rs 40 crore
to the Centre, but chief minister Sushilkumar Shinde disagreed with
him.

Patil will be staging a dharna while the rest of the cabinet will
be in Delhi on Wednesday to plead with the Union government for more
aid. The campaign will culminate in a rally, to be held at
Ahmednagar, on February 16, which will be addressed by NCP president
Sharad Pawar.

The NCP is apparently planning to whip up resent ment against the
NDA government in the run up to the elections.

Though pawar's decision to align with congress is totally against
the basic principles of NCP.It is also important to look on the other
side of its effect. BJP will have a strong opposition this time if
pawar goes ahead with his desicision. Like any politician would claim
that rules are made us and not we for the sake of rules. Any ways
once party fame can do lot things than a party name.
Elections are important and can bring in large differences.

NEW DELHI: The battle for the Nationalist Congress Party label is
likely to be long-drawn. The Election Commission has called a
meeting on February 13 to hear the two groups of the party, led by P
A Sangma and Sharad Pawar to settle the dispute for the party's
name, flag and symbol.

The group that can substantiate its claim with a ``supporting
document'' will win the party's insignia, EC sources said.

The NCP split on January 24 over Pawar's decision to get into a
national alliance with the Congress led by Sonia Gandhi. In an
emergency meeting, Sangma walked out and appointed himself president
of the NCP in an emergency meeting convened by his supporters at his
residence. Immediately after, Pawar ``expelled'' Sangma from the
party.

Sangma met Election Commission officials on January 27, laying claim
to the party's name, symbol and flag on grounds that he represented
the ``original NCP''. In response, the Pawar group filed a caveat in
the EC the same day.

The EC has asked both groups to clarify the following points _ the
number of party workers when the NCP was formed, the number with
each group, the number of MLCs, MLAs and MPs and the party's
constitution and resolution whether there has been any shift in that
by either group.

In his petition before the EC, Sangma (who's entered into an
alliance with the BJP-led NDA) has claimed that Pawar, by aligning
with the Congress, has diluted the basic tenet of the NCP opposing
persons of foreign origin from becoming the country's prime
minister. In his caveat, Pawar claimed that he has the support of a
larger number of party members at all levels and in the North-east.

Mehta has not accepted the resignation, Pathak says he has made up

"I have not made up my mind on where to go from here, but I will be

a possible prime ministerial candidate."

Pathak has been Mehta's long-time aide since his labour union days.
He says that although none of his supporters and friends have

"At least 40 per cent of the NCP national council members will

than the BJP and lost while NCP took away 18 per cent of the votes.
