hi ummer,
with due respect to ghulam haider, during the 47-48 phase ,several
music directors occupied the top slot including anil biswas, khemchand
prakash,naushad,gyan dutt etc.mds like c ramchandra,s d
burman, husnlal bhagatram with their comercial success in 46-47 had
become significantly influential.
it was their combined shift to lata which harmed shamshad begum a lot.
anil biswas and khemchand prakash started using lata at the same as
ghulam haider.in fact they gave her almost all female songs in
asha,ziddi and anokha pyar.
ghulam haider was using lot of female voices for his three 1948 films
like geeta, surinder kaur, zohrabai and lalita deoolkar.in fact geeta
roy also sang in all the three films in which lata sang.she sang 7
songs for him ,of which 4 were solos.
the story about ghulam haider making that famous statemant about lata
and taking a stand ;according to lot of people, has been propogated
by lata herself to undermine the role of people
like anil biswas, naushad,c ramchandra, who had often publicly spoken
about their significant role in lata's career.
and why didn't ghulam haider use lata in his post-1948 films like
kaneez,aabshar etc?.
shamshad begum's downfall occurred because of the shift of almost all
music directors towards either lata or geeta during the 47-50
period.it is interesting to note that geeta roy sang more songs than
lata during this phase.her position during this phase of film music
is often overlooked when she was singing for all music directors like
khemchand prakash,anil biswas,naushad,c ramchandra,husnlal bhagatram
and enjoyed immense popularity.
i would also like to quote what ghulam haider said about shamshad
begum as mentioned in raju bhartan's lata biography-''your voice is
like stream in its flow.give it a classical turn and the chenab loses
its fluidity.just you let your vocals be as they are.it needs but a
comprehending composer to draw the very best from you.and your best
is still good enough to beat the rest''.
regrds,
mahesh
