any known reason for increased meteor activity ?
Quadrantid Meteors http://www.fillingthesky.com/id26.html
The Quadrantid meteor shower peaks in the early morning of January 3rd. It is
supposed to have an average rate of about 40 meteors per hour but I have never
braved the cold long enough to see much of a display. The radiant is at RA 15 hr
20 min, Dec +49 degrees. The blue dot in the illustration below represents the
Quadrantid radiant.
This is the only meteor shower I know of that is named after a defunct modern
constellation, le Mural (also called Mural Quadrant).

Le Mural was invented by the French astronomer Joseph-Jerome LeFrancais de
Lalande (1732-1807). It was first published in 1795 by the French globemaker, J.
Fortin. Le Mural was seldom used by astronomers after the late 19th century and
it is not considered an official constellation today.

Le Mural honors the astronomical instrument that Lalande and his nephew, Michel
Le Francais, used to chart stars. The constellation represents a large mural
(wall) quadrant, an instrument so large that it was mounted on a wall and not on
a tripod. Tycho Brahe's famous mural quadrant had a measuring scale that was one
quarter the circumference of a circle two meters in radius. Because they were
wall mounted and stationary mural quadrants required the observer to wait for
the rotation of the earth to bring a star into the sighting tube.
