Subject: Re: Recent findings Crocodilians in KUTCH!!!
Dear friends of Geology and science,
Recently a Canine tooth of Crocodilian (crocodile ancestor) is fond by Mr. DILIP
Vaidya (Ex Curator of Kutch Museum) from place near MATHAL - Nakhatrana, was
presented to me to Identify the fossil and it spontaneously stroked me as a
Crocodile tooth fossil. before he handed to the Museum of Kharoi I gave him some
details about it and requested for further investigations of cross section view
of the fossil with paleontologists. I carried on for confirmations from the
paleontologists and Crocodile specialist groups around the world. and I got some
good emails guide for that fossil as follows
Thank you all Charlie Manolis, Grahame and Tom Dacey, for your kind favor and
guide for the specimen. At present I have following further information and will
ask for further details from the Kharoi Museum where the specimen is kept.
Look of the Specimen. : It is non circular flattened - wedges - raised ridges
as canine appearance.
colour: stony silicated brown yellowish
Size: 3" length from tip to the base of tooth base is 2" wide Thickness at base
is 1.5" tapering to the tip of the tooth
Place of finding.: Fresh water, - Lat 23 .17 N Longitude 69 . 20 E near MATHAL
village in Kutch western India -Middle Albian of Lower Cretaceous age
Other specimens: Nanofossils Jurassic nannofossils crocodilian fossils from near
by Pandhrow coal mine, crocodilian fossils from Harudi swamp formation, eosine
snakes in Lakhapat area. Reworked Cretaceous spores and pollen grains from the
Matanomadh Fromation (Palaeocene) Kutch. India,
Further Inquiry : is done to the Museum of kharoi to investigate about Cross
section view, Tooth interior canal structure if visible in horizontal cross
section and an vertical - longitudinal serrations on them.

Dear Dr Bhudia,
I passed your photo on to Dr Steve Salisbury, who works on crocodile fossils. As
you can see from his reply below, he would need more information and images in
order to identify whether the tooth is from a crocodilian. If you have any of
this information, please get it to me and I can pass it on to Steve.
Regards,
Charlie
"Not sure how much can be said about that specimen from the photo. It could be
croc or even theropod dinosaur. (Shark would only be a possibility if the cross
section was semi-circular; would also need to see whether a root was
present/absent.) Would need to see what it looks like in cross-section (ie, is
it flattened or circular) and check whether it has an carinae (raised ridges).
Most crocs have some kind of carinae, but only the deep-snouted forms have
carinae with serrations on them (in common with theropod dinosaurs and
varanids). The person who sent the photo states that the specimen was found at a
'croc site'. Info on the age and type of sediments (ie. fresh vs salt water)
and other fossils found at this site would probably also help figure out what
this tooth belongs to. Sorry that I can't be of any more assistance. If they
get back to you with more photos and info, please pass it on and I'll see what
I can do."

Do we have anyone who might be able to identify this as a crocodile tooth?
