Riding down the busy streets of Bangalore, I saw a number of hoardings talking about the most happening new year bash in Bangalore, Ads in Newspapers, on my mobile and on emails...all saying that its time to cheer and be happy as we enter the New Year.
But, hold back a moment...2004 is not over yet and in its last days it has brought the worst kind of devastation to thousands and millions of people in South East Asia including India. It is time for us the reflect.
Are we going to continue to live our lives thinking of this disaster as some isolated incident that does not affect us or relate to us - go ahead with our new year celebrations or are we going to take up this responsibility and do somethin about it.
This question has kept me wondering. The first thought was that I will not spend money on going to a splendid New Year bash. I can save that money and put it in some relief work. But, then I don't go to New Year Parties anyway.
Hence, I have decided that I will contribute Rs. 1000 of my December salary of Rs. 8000/- towards relief work for the affected people. I have set the ball rolling and I urge all of you to take it forward from here.
It is your choice - a New Year Bash for Rs. 1500 with friends and family or a quiet dinner at home and satisfaction that the Rs. 1500 can help a mom rebuild her house, get some food for her homeless children and a fisherman who can hope to restart his fishing business with this small contribution. You can check out CNBC or NDTV to get contacts of all the organizations that you can send your contributions too.
We belong to this society and its time we came together strongly to say that we are responsible and we have the courage to do something.
I urge you to think and act now!
Pray the New Year is Safe for all of us.
