hello i'm morroccan student in hydrogeology and I am a new user of visual
modflow.

I would like to have your opinion concerning how to calculate the quantity of
pollutant in gram in a plume simulated using visual modflow. I imagine that one
will use the option zone budget on the meshs covered by the pollution which one
will multiply by the concentration calculated on each mesh. Except that the
plume covers only one portion of certain meshs. How approach you one in this
case?

Thank you for your assistance.

I'm trying to import a modflow 2000 dataset in Visual Modflow,
created by the MF96to2k.exe tool. The original model was a modflow96
model created in PM Win. I ran in to the following problem:

The original model (modflow96) works with user defined leakance
(VCONT) and transmissivity. Modflow 2000 of course uses conductance
and thickness.

Kz is calculated by Visual Modflow when a modflow 2000 dataset is
imported, using VCONT and thickness of the layers. The thickness of
the layers is defined by hand (when using the MF96to2k tool), which
is a (arbitrary) constant thickness. The layer thickness, however was
also defined in the original PM Win model, and is not constant at all.

I wish to use a discretization file created by PM win,in stead of the
one created by MF96to2k, so I renamed the discretization file to
match the name in the .nam file.

Visual Modflow however, does not accept my discretization file. An
error occurs.

My question: can Visual Modflow import a modflow 2000 model with a
non-constant thickness, and if so, how can I check what the problem
with the PM Win discretization file is?

Thanks,
Arjen Oord

Hi Elizabeth is very easy..

You need more information, tell me...

Hi Dear Members

I have some querries regarding the Visual modflow simulation. i found this
group and i hope that i will get some guidance in this regard.

1.I am doing work in an alluvial plain and developing a three layered model of
the unconfined aquifer system of the area. I am bit confused in assigning the
boundary conditions for the canal that whether it should be assigned a stream
boundary or a recharge boundary and moreover it would be assigned on the top
layer or in the other lower layers as well.

2.If there are streams in the area but those are having a very little flow
whether those should be assigned as the stream boundaries or left opened.

   I will be really thankful.

Philip,

If you want to know how to use the program the user guide is very
good, if you want to know something more about the finite difference
method there should be a pdf file attached with the program package
that describes the theory. By the way you can find more about the
engine MODFLOW at the following webpage:

Hi members, I am working with Modflow since a couple of months and am
actually using PMWin. Now i am working on this 3D-model which has 20
stressperiods (each 1/2 day) with 12 timesteps each, i.e. 1h length.
Modflow runs up to timestep 8 in stress period 19 and then stops with
the following erro message:
An I/O error was detected (system call=lseek, errno=19, unit=50)
error occurs at _ubudsv_
called from _wel5bd_
called from _MAIN_

If i use only 11 timesteps, the program runs through and the more
timesteps i add the earlier it stops.

I hope someone of you might be able to help me with this.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

first I have to say, that this group ist very usefull! Thanks!

Here my question:
I have problems with convergence by running the modell. Sometimes you
can see in the residualgraph (running modus) a up and down in a very
regular way. This leads to "no convergence", if the maximun of
iteration ist reached.
Do you have any idea, whats wrong with the model, if doing in this way
by running the model?

Thanks for helping!

Have you made a rough water budget for the area?
You have to check that the water that run through (according to average

The model area is approximately 5km N-S, 6km E-W. On the southern
border of the model the area discharges along 4.8km of coastline. The
lowest of the three layers is sedimentary flysch sequence, with
overlying lava flows (containing the aquifers). In places there are
overlying tuff deposits. Even with a week of calibration, some
observation wells are still 20m too high.
Three landfills (relatively small) are located along the coatline where
the groundwater discharges. All together there are 9 zones of
conductivity: Scoria, tuff, Sedimentary flysch, Landfill, 5 difference
lava flows.
The grid is 166*166.
At the present state, with any additional change to conductivity
values, I get "Abnormal termination: Floating Point Overflow".

Happy to provide more clarrification if needed.

Am I suppose to email my forum postings to here?

If so...
I have a 3 layer model, which calibrate past 20m (Mean Residual).
When I change parameters past the current point, I get the "Abnormal
termination: Floating Point Overflow" message.
What does this mean?
