lokapriya aur jaanemaane paarshwagaayak Sonu Nigam par.

jee haan doston, Sonu Nigam ke gaayiki ki adaayigi aisi hi hai ki har
sunnewaala unhe pasand karta hai. geet chaahe kaisa bhi ho, Sonu
Nigam ki 'versatility' har gaane mein zaahir hoti hai. zaraa suniye

sangh ke aatmarishTh aur samarpit sadasyon mein se ek the. Kaifi
saahab kli rachnaaon mein mohabbat, maanviya moolyon se yukt
samatavaadi samaaj ka swar sunaaee paDta hai. Kaifi saahab ne filmon
mein na keval geet likhe balki unki kahaaniyaan aur samvaad bhi
likhe. padya mein likhee unki ek hi film hai Heer Ranjha. unka likha
mashoor naaTak hai Aakhri Shamaa. 1943 mein jab Mumbai
mein 'Communist Party' ka daftar shuru huya tabhi aagaman huya tha

Two songs from Rang De Basanti have made it to the Oscar long list for Best Original Song.

They are hummed and sung by millions around the world, and now two songs from India's official entry to the Oscars, Rang De Basanti — 'Khalbali' and 'Lukka Chuppi' — have also qualified to vie for nomination in the Best Original Song category.

"Of all the songs in the album, these two are special to me," says lyricist Prasoon Joshi, who worked with music director AR Rehman and director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra on the songs. Regarding 'Khalbali', he says, "I was looking for a new word for turbulence. Khalbali is a Hindi word and Rehman has done some amazing percussion on it which explains the turbulence."

He goes on to add, "'Lukka Chuppi' is a mother-son song where the son has passed away. It's almost surreal in terms of expression... The son is telling the mother, through a hide and seek game, 'I'm in a place that's beautiful... I've jumped and touched a bunch of dreams...' I've really enjoyed writing these thoughts. I was in tears when Lataji (Mangeshkar) sang the song."

As the song was being recorded, there was more drama. "We'd finished the recording when Rehman suddenly said, 'Let's extend the song' and started humming. I said let me think. And on the spot composed some words to go with it."

For the Oscar's Original Song category, earlier won by songs like 'My Heart Will Go On' from Titanic and 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight' from Lion King, 'Khalbali' and 'Lukka Chuppi' will come up against 54 other popular numbers like 'You Know My Name' from Casino Royale and Sheryl Crow's 'Real Gone from Cars'. But Joshi is confident. "I've taken pains translating the ideas without writing another song — staying as close to the original as possible. The songs mustn't sound pretentious or labour the point." Finally, the songs' USP is their unusually fresh feel, he adds. "We hope that since the world is looking for new ideas, there's a chance."

Hi,

I am fine. VB reception is horrible in Gurgaon. The Delhi VB
transmitter is so low power that nothing is audible during the day
time, one can listen only at night, that too as if it is being
transmitted from thousands of miles away.

Today, we have a very special guest in the Vividh Bharati studio.

Our guest today is Prof Akhlak Mohammad Khan, whom we know as
Shahryar, the noted shayar and lyricist. Honoured with several
prestigious national and international awards  including the Sahitya
Akademi award in 1987 for Khwab Ka Dar Band Hai, Shahryar retired as
Chairman and  Professor of Urdu from the Aligarh Muslim University in
1996.  His first  collection of poems, Isme-Aazam was published in
1965.  His other famous works are Saatvan Dar, Hijr Ke Mausam, and
Neend Ki Kirchein.  He has also published five collections in
Devanagri  script, thus bridging the Urdu-Hindi divide and reaching
out to those who  appreciate Urdu poetry but cannot read the Urdu
script.  His latest  collection, brought out by the Sahitya Akademi,
is entitled Dhund Ki Roshni.  He has written songs in a few Hindi
films as well such as Umraojaan, Gaman and Faasle.

Sharyar saahab, welcome to Vividh Bharati!

"I am honoured to be invited by Vividh Bharati and consider myself
fortunate to be here in the VB studio. This day will be a memorable
day of my life."

First I would like to ask why have you written so less number of
songs in films?

"I was in Aligarh and had decided not to make films my profession. I
came here by chance and started writing songs in films. But at time,
there was not much integration of songs with the story line.
Previously, songs used to be attached to the story and the story used
to progress in a song. But at my time, song was detached from the
story. There was not emotional attachment of the song. I had decided
not to write anything I was asked to write in the name of 'film
song'. I wont write anything other than shayari. If you see
carefully, my songs are nothing but shayari. There is no difference
between the two as far as I am concerned. Once Muzaffar Ali was
making Gaman and he had two songs of mine in the form of shayari. He
called me up and asked for my permission to use them in the film."

Why is it that the traditional shaayar is not much interested in
films?

"It is not the case. I keep watching films regularly. I listen to
Vividh Bhaarti atleast 8 hours a day whenever I am in Aligarh. One
has to pay some price to get something good. I pay the price of
listening to some bad songs in order to listen to the other good
songs (laughs). I also like eating good food, wearing good clothes,
and everything that a normal man wants to do. 'Dil hai to dhadakne ka
bahaana koi dhoonde' was written by Zasbi in 1965. When I used it in
the Gaman song, he told me that he had written it for Aligarh. But I
believe there can be nothing more meaningful than this for Mumbai
(Bambai ke liye isse behatar ghazal naheen ho sakta). The title of
Suresh Wadekar's album has been kept as 'Seene Mein jalan'. This song
has become his identity."

When did you start your jouney as a shaayar?

"The interesting thing is that till 17/18/19 years of age, there was
no sign of shayari around me. There was no shaayar in the family
except for a distant relative who was in Pakistan, who later became a
noted shaayar, but at that time his repuation inour family was not
good. My father wanted me to become a police officer. I came in
contact with Khairaman Azmi from whom I developed the liking for
shayari. To maintain his company, I had to read and keep myslef
updated with shayari as a justification. I started writing myself
when I was studying B.A. My name Kunwar Akhlak Mohd Khan sounded
strange to many and hence kept Shahryar as my pen name. I was
professor of Urdu at the post-graduate level, but had immense
interest in reading fiction. When Muzaffar Ali told me that he wanted
to make a film set in Lucknow, I suggested him to make a film based
on the novel Umraojaan. 'Yeh kya jagah hai doston' was written
earlier and we made necessary changes to give a correct and complete
picture so that the entire graph comes forward. First Jaidev was
signed as the music director, but due to some differences, he left
and Khayyam was roped in."

Did you write the songs of Umraojaan on tunes or tunes were made
based on the shaayri?

"First shayari was written, then they were tuned. Khayyam always make
the lyricist write the words first. In Anjuman and Daaman also, I
wrote first."

So you have not written any song on the tune?

"Yes, I have written in Faasle, the song 'Hum chup hain ke dil sun
rahe hain' was written on the tune."

"I also wrote in 'Janam Janam Mere Sanam' on the tune. But I am not
used to do that. So whenever it is requierd to write on a tune, I ask
the producer and music director to give me a recorded tape of the
tune, I take it home, decipher it and then write. I cannot write
instantly on a tune like others write while the music director is
doing da da da da... (laughs)."

So you kept on coming to Mumbai from Aligarh very often?

"I had asked Muzaffar Ali to pay for this wastage of time (laughs).
First for Jaidev, I had to come, the for Khayyam I came here. My
holidays were wasted in this and so I asked for compensation. At the
time of retirement from my college, I came to know that the unavailed
leave can be encashed, but I had very few remaining leave due to this
Aligarh Mumbai frequent trips."

Which song would you like me to play at this point?

"Majrooh's 'Hum hain mataay-e-koocha-o-bazaar ki tarah'"

You told that till 18/19 years of age, you had no idea that you would
become a shaayar?

"Thats right. Even in the Urdu exam, I used to learn the shayari by
heart and vomit out in the answer script. Today also, I am not aware
of how to scan the meter of shayari. All I know is that I donot put
useless words in my shayari. I believe that any art form should be
very precise to be beautiful. Today also I get surprised after
writing something."

You said that you did not get any support from your family towards
this career. But what was their reaction after you emerged as a
successful player in thsi field?

"They were happy later and realised that this field is also good. My
elder brother is was an SP, he used to tell his colleagues and
friends about me and used to introduce me to them. I never thought
that I would become a shaayar. Similarly Ia lso did not know that I
would become a teacher. After doing BA, I took admission in MA in
Psychology, but soon I changed my department and got into the Shayari
(Urdu) department. I deeply involved myself in sher-shayari and did
everything with full dedication and got the result as well. Accidents
kept on happenning in my life. Getting into the film line is yet
another accident."

You have been a progressive poet?

"I have never made an exhibition of personal sorrows and problems in
my shayari. Whatever I have written is what I have seen around me in
the society. The 'Theory of Compensation' is not applicable in my
writings. I had told myself that I wont keep myself aloof from my
neibourhood, from the problems in our society."

Dont you think there is too much description of 'shabaab'
and 'sharaab' in Urdu poetry?

"It is unfortunate that Urdu poetry is unnecessarily blamed for too
much of alcoholism. But this is not correct. Can you find any such
thing in Iqbal, Ghalib or Mir's works? It is unfortunate that few
singers have sung such songs and qawwaalis and which became popular
and then Urdu shayari was blamed for this. I drink alcohol, donot
consider it as bad, but I never write on it (laughs). There are many
things that have been publicised in wrong taste about Urdu language.
Some people tried to purify the language, but many believed
that 'Agar aam log galat keh rahe hain to wohi sahi hai'."

So, which song would you like to listen next?

"Hasan Kamaal's 'Hum wafaa kar ke bhi tanha reh gaye'"

Whom you consider as your inspiration?

"There are many, like Faiz, Maqdum, Jasbir, Wajahad, then from the
past there is Ghalib, Mir etc, then my seniors like Nasir Kazmi,
Khairaman Azmi. One good thing about Aligarh is that good things are
given due respect and popularized widely. Due to this, we used to
remain updated about everything going around us. We were duly aware
what our seniors, contemporaries and juniors were writing."

You said you are interested in reading fiction. have you ever thought
of writing fiction?

"No, I cannot write fiction, I am just intersted in reading it."

There was a period when ghazals were highly popular and a large
number of ghazals were coming up. Did it have any impact on you?

"This is the period of 'nazm', ghazals cannot be our part (Yeh daud
nazmon ka hai, ghazal hamara saath naheen de sakti). There is a
thought prevailing that ghazal writers are weak shaayars (ghazal
likhnewale kamzor shaayar hain) (laughs), if he can write nazm as
well, then he is a good shayar (laughs). Jokes apart, I have also
written several ghazals."

Nazm or ghazal - which is more closer to your heart?

"I give equal status to both nazm and ghazal. Anyway, there is not
much difference between the two. There has always been influence of
nazm on ghazals. Everything cannot be incorporated in a nazm, but
whatever the shayar wants to say can be said."

In your 'ashaar', night (raat) comes very frequently in different
look and approach. Why you have so love for the night?

"There are two views. Most people consider 'day' as optimistic
and 'night' as a pessimistic thought. But I think 'night' stands for
peace (sukoon). My new collection is named as 'Shaam Honewali Hai'.
Many of my friends told me that the name is not suitable, that it
sounds pessimistic, but I dont think so. 'Hawa ke darmeeyaan aaj raat
ke mere padaav hai, main apne khwaab ke charaagh ko jalaa na
paayunga, yeh sochkar subah se badhawaas hoon'. My thought is that
whatever time we are sleeping at night, it goes as a wastage, I would
like to remain awake for a longer time."

MUMBAI: Singer-composer Himesh Reshammiya is baffled by the controversy his statement on the late RD Burman's singing style has created, saying "it was never my intention to insult Pancham-da".

Reshammiya allegedly accused the late singer of singing nasally. To this, Asha Bhosle had retorted, "If anyone says Burman-saab sang through his nose, he should be slapped."

"I don't know what has hit me. It was never my intention to insult Pancham-da (Burman)," Reshammiya told IANS.

"How can I, when I've grown up learning music composition from Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Pancham-da?

"During an event I was asked about my 36 hits in two years, and how did I answer charges of singing through my nose. To this I responded by saying Mukesh-saab, Pancham-da and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan-saab were never accused of singing nasally.

"I only wanted to prove a point. Now, I realise I made a mistake. I should've never brought in the names of these greats in my argument. It was a mistake," Reshammiya said.

About the diva's response, Reshammiya said, "I respect and admire Lata-ji (Lata Mangeshkar) and Asha-ji. To me they're the pillars of the music industry. If I've unintentionally hurt Asha-ji, I want to apologise profusely. My upbringing won't permit me to offend people who are far more distinguished and senior than I can ever be."
