aata hai, usey ek na ek din is faani duniya ko chhoD kar chale jaana
hi hota hai. lekin kuchh log jaakar bhi naheen jaate, hamaare dilon

9 January 1934 ko Amritsar mein janme Mahendra Kapoor apne 40 din ki
aayu mein hi Bambai aa gaye. 5 varsh ki aayu mein unhone gaana shuru
kiya. 12 varsh ki aayu mein we pahunch gaye apne aadarsh Mohd Rafi
saahab ke paas. Rafi saahab ne unhe samjhaaya ki agar ek achchha
gaayak banna hai to pehle shaastriya sangeet ka seekhna behad
zaroori hai. aur har gaayak ka apna ek maulik 'style' hona chaahiye.
1957 mein jab we 'college' mein paDh rahe the tab All India Metro
Murphy competition mein unhone hissa liya jiska vishay tha Hindi
filmon mein parshwa gaayan ka mohra. haalanki Mahendra Kapoor ne
1951 mein V.Balsara ki film Madmast mein gaa chuke the, par
is 'competition' ne unke liye paarshwa gaayan ka dwaar khol diya.
is 'competition' mein 'judge' the Naushad aur C Ramchandra jaise
sangeetkaar. unke gaayan se prabhaavit hokar Naushad saahab ne Sohni

SC: yeh main ek, meri guruji Shobha Joshi-ji ne hamein sekhaaee hain,
bahut ek 'effective' aap keh sakte hain praarthana hai, "jai jag

SC: maa ko yahi praarthana karti hoon ki 'maa, aap sun rahi hain
mujhe, aap sabka man is tarah se bhaa deejiye, moh deejiye ki main
sabke man tak pahunch sakoon, dil-dimaaG tak pahunch sakoon, aap ki
aashirvaad rahe.

AS: kya baat hai! bahut baDhiyaa aapne gaaya hai, har vidha ka thoDa
thoDa gaake aap gaayiki ka jo poora ang hai, jaisa ki aap ne Ghazal,
Thumri aur bhajan aur daadra bhi gaaya, usse aap ki jo gaayiki hai,
usmein jo 'variety' hai woh dekhne ko mila, balki sunne ko milaa, aur
hamaare sunnewaale bhi zaroor Khush huye honge, mohit huye honge,
aapko sunkar unke man zaroor bhaav-vibhor ho uThe honge, ismein koi
do raay naheen. to ham yeh jaanna chaahenge ki agar filmon
ke 'offers' aapko aate hain to, har kalaakaar ki tamanna hoti hai ki
woh film, jo ki ek bahut hi lokapriya maadhyam hota hai, logon tak
pahunchne ke liye ek bahut achchha zariya hai, to agar is kshetra
mein aapko bulaawaa aaya to aap zaroor jaayengi?

SC: yeh to Ashok saahab, aap ne mere dil ki baat keh dee. aaj
sabse 'effective media' jo hai ham keh sakte hain ki woh film hai aur
kaafi pehle bhi iska ek 'tradition' reh chuka hai, jaise Pankaj-ji,
Jagjit-ji, Pankaj Udhas-ji ne filmon mein na ki 'playback singing'
kee hai, balki woh parde ke aage unhone apna fan pesh kiya hai.

AS: sahi baat hai.

SC: to bas yahi tamanna hai ki kabhi koi is 'art' ko bhi pehchaane
ki 'other than' aaj ki jo sangeet hai, aaj bhi bahut achchhi dhune
ban rahi hai aur kaafi alag alag 'genres of music' jise ham keh sakte
hain, kaafi alag alag 'voices' jo saamne aa rahi hain, kabhi mauka
mile to, koi aaye aur kahe to main to zaroor usmein jaana
chaahoongi. 'but yes, the exposure should be good', jo main chaahti
hoon, meri jo 'portrayal' hai 'as a' Thumri daadra Ghazal 'semi-
classical artiste', woh jo 'impression' hai 'as an artiste' woh
barkaraar rakhen. baaki to 'the most effective media is films today'.

AS: aap ki sharten huyi yeh tamaan (laughs)

SC: (laughs) naheen, aisi baat naheen hai, aap 'voice' ko jis tarah
se istemaal karna chaahen, jo bhi achchhe 'directors' honge, kisi ke
dimaag mein aisi baat hogi, is tarah ki aawaaz ko kis tarah se pesh
kar sake, main to bahut shukriya adaa karoongi agar aise 'offer'
aaye, aur aap ne jaise kahaa 'manshaa hai', to yeh ek bahut baDi
mansha hai (laughs) main kahoongi.

AS: swaabhaavik si baat hai

SC: jee jee, aaj, kyunki bahut saare 'reality shows' aa gaye hain,
achchhe gaanewaale bahut aa rahe hain, kamaal ke gaate hain, kamaal
ki tayyaari hai, to 'competition' bahut hai aur 'very healthy
competition I must say'

AS: sahi baat hai, aur ek kalaakaar ki yeh bhi tamanna hoti hai ki
falaana sangeetkaar agar mujhse gawaaye, baDaa achchha hoga, meri
kalaa nikhar sakti hai, sanvar sakti hai, to aisi aapki tamanna
zaroor hogi, to ham yeh zaroor jaanna chaahte hain ki woh kaun se
sangeetkaar hain jinke saath kaam karne ke liye aap utsuk hain yaa
aap sochti hain ki unke saath kaam karne ka mauka mile to achchha ho.

SC: (laughs) sabse pehle 'I think' main A R Rahman saahab ka naam
loongi, 'I think contemporary music' ke saath unhone jo 'classical'
ka 'blend' unhone kiya hai 'I think' bahut kam aise 'directors' hain
jinhone kiya hai. Vishal Shekhar aajkal bahut achchha kaam kar rahe
hain, Shankar Mahadevan, Shankar Ehsan Loy, yeh jo aajkal ke
sangeetkaar hain, Pritam Chakraborty bahut achchha kaam kar rahe

kalandar" ne unko shohrat ki bulnadi par biThaaya. uske baad unke ek
ke baad ek qawwaaliyon ke 'records' aate gaye. filmon mein Noor
Mahal, Awlia-e-Islam aur Roti Kapda Aur Makaan mein unhone apni amiT
chhap chhoDee. Janu Babu Qawwal ke sangeet nirdeshan mein film
Noormahal ka ek aur geet suniye Mohd Rafi ki aawaaz mein, geetkaar
hain Saba Afghani.

doston, Jubilee Jhankaar ke is ank mein ham aapki mulaaqaat karwa
rahe hain ek aise shaKhs se jo Vividh Bharati ke praacheentam shrota
hain, film sangeet ko sunne aur usko sangrahit karne ka shauk un par
ek deewaangee ki tarah sawaar hai. peshe se angrezee ke patrakaar
hain aur Khud bhi gungunaane ka shauk rakhte hain. to aaiye chalte
hain Civil Lines Allahabad ke us ghar mein jahaan par kuchh aise
durlabh 'film records' maujood hain jo shaayad Vividh Bharati ke
Khazaane mein bhi naheen hai! 'records' ke alaawa is shaKhs ki
smritiyon mein aisi jaankaariyaan maujood hain jisse shrotaa
chamatkrit ho jaayenge. in saahab ka naam hai V S Datta, aur inse
baatchit kee hai Kanchan Prakash Sangeet ne. to aaiye sunte hain.

VSD: meri taraf se bhi Vividh Bharati ko bahut bahut namaskaar! main
Vividh Bharati tab se sun raha hoon jab se yeh shuru huya tha, balki
main 'radio' sangeet tab se sun raha hoon jab se Delhi
se 'programmes' shuru huye the. ki jab sab log daawaton par chale
jaayen, main ghar pe dilli ke farmaaishi kaaryakram sunne ke liye
ghar par baiTha rehta tha (KPS laughs), isliye mujhe bahut saari
puraani yaaden hain 'radio' ke saath.

KPS: lekin Datta saahab, mujhe yeh bataaiye ki 'radio' jo aap sunte
the '38 mein, 40s ke dashak mein, to us 'radio' se jo 'broadcast'
honewaale 'programmes' the, woh aur baad mein 3 October 1957 se jo
Vividh Bharati ki shuruwaat huyi, to Vividh Bharati ka rang Dhang hi
alag tha, to kuchh fark aap ne mehsoos kiya?

VSD: dekhiye, woh jo hamein apnaapan lagaa tha ki Delhi Radio
ke 'programme' ghar ghar pahunch jaate the kyunki aur koi 'station'
naheen tha, aur dilli ke 'programme', jaise farmaaishi 'programme'
sunne ke liye log beqaraari se door door se 'radio' ke paas pahunch
jaate the. aur mujhe ab tak woh 'meter' yaad hai, jab woh kaha karte
the - "ham dilli se bol rahe hain 338 ashaariya 6 aur 31 ashaariya
15 'meter'-on par", phir yeh ho gaya "338 dashamlav 6 aur 31
dashamlav 15", pehle bolte the "hamaari pehli mazlis shuru ho rahi
hai", phir bolne lage "hamaari pehli sabhaa aarambh ho rahi hai".
pehle Aap Ki Farmaaish 'programme' aata tha, phir usi ko Aap Hi Ke
Geet kar diya, jisko Radio Ceylon ne uThaaya, isko 'lift' kiya, aur
aaj bhi is 'title' ko istemaal kar rahe hain, lekin yeh tha dilli ka.

VSD: jee, Aap Hi Ke Geet, yeh 'title' dilli ka tha, Mittal saahab jo
the, bahut si chiTThiyaan aaya karti theen, woh zamaana yeh tha ki
samjheeye Noorjehan jo Mallika-e-Tarannum hain, woh aakaashvaaNi
dilli ke Draame mein hissa lene aati theen aur ek 'drama' tha jiska

VSD: uske baad to itni oonchee ho gayeen, us waqt ek bachchi si

se 'stations' aa gaye, to 'reception' Kharaab ho gaya. dilli ka phir
sunaai naheen deta, phir log kehne lage 'local station' lo wahaan
par. February 1949 mein AkaashvaaNi Allahabad aaya to itni raahat
mili ki raat ko pankhe ki khaD-khaD se 'disturb' naheen hote the (KPS
laughs loudly), naheen to DC pankhe bahut 'disturb' karte the.

VSD: jee jee. to jab Radio ceylon aaya to 2-2 3-3 ghanTon tak
lagaataar bajaane lagaa, to lokpriyataa udhar chali gayi,
sabki 'attention' udhar chali gayi. Vividh Bharati jab aaya, pehle
bahut ajeeb lagaa, Dar lagaa ki Vividh Bharati ne shuru to kiya hai
lekin pataa naheen kitne din chale kyunki un dino bahut saKhtee thi
ki film sangeet 'radio' par na bajaaya jaaye jab ki woh 'melody era'
thi. mera jo patrakaarita tha usmein maine yahi liya tha ki 'radio'
par film sangeet ko band na kiya jaaye kyunki filmi sangeet ko yeh
naheen haTaa sakenge, itna hi mushkil hai ki jitna 'tooth-paste'
ki 'tube' mein 'tooth-paste' waapas Daalna mushkil hai (KPS laughs
loudly). aisi 'simily' maine dee thi. to Akashvani se tab filmi geet
naheen bajte the kyunki filmi 'producers' se abhi 'contract sign'
naheen huya tha.

KPS: jahaan tak ki jaankaari hai ki us waqt ke jo 'minister' the,
unko 'classical music' se bahut zyaada lagaav tha...

KPS: aur woh naheen chaahte the ki aisa 'pollution' aa jaaye. isiliye
Vividh Bharati ke jaisa koi 'channel' ho jispar filmi geet bhi bajnaa
shuru ho jaaye, aise Vividh Bharati ki shuruwaat huyi.

VSD: haan, aur Vividh Bharati ki shuruwaat huyi, aur bahut zor shor
se shuruwaat huyi. jo Hindi film sangeet ke premee the, unko lagaa ki
ekdam se bahaar aa gayi, veeraane mein bahaar aa gayi, Vividh Bharati
ne yeh kaam kiya tha. 'radio' ka ek bahut baDaa 'role' hai, aur akele
Vividh Bharati, mere Khayaal se to akele Vividh BHarati woh 'role'
adaa kar raha hai kyunki koi aisa 'station' naheen jisko poora
Hindustaan sunta ho.

KPS: Datta saahab, jab aap '38 mein sunte the 'radio', tab aapki kya
umra thi?

VSD: main bachcha tha bilkul, aur main aapko bataayun, mujhe itna
shauk tha, woh 'records 78 rpm' ke paDe huye hain, main 'school' bhi
naheen jaata tha, tab bhi jo hai aise paDe rehte the, aur meri
numaaish lag jaati thi, log aate the, bolte the 'isse poochhiye yeh
gaana nikaal laayo to wohi gaana le aayegaa'. main jaayun aur woh
gaana nikaal ke le aayun. kisi ko yakeen na aaye ki yeh to abhi

VSD: Pran aaye the yahaan Allahabad mein, Pran aaye huye the, unke
saath Manoj Kumar bhi baiThe the, aur log bhi the, Purab Aur Paschim
ki 'shooting' ke liye yahaan aaye the. to main unke kamre mein
pahuncha, maine unse poochha 'Pran saahab, kya san 1942 ke baad kisi
ne aap ko Chaand kehke pukaara hai?' to meri taraf dekhne

tha. aur main wahaan pe gaya to logon ne kahaa ki yeh Allahabad
University se hain, aur inse kaho ki ek gaana sunaaye. maine kahaa ki

jo kaaryakram kiya, Sharda ke baad woh Baiju Bawra pe aa gaye the,
unhone beech ka 'portion' bilkul gol kar diya tha. ab main aap se
kehna chaahoonga ki us beech ke 'portion' mein unhone aise gaane
gaaye jo bahut saste the. ek mere paas hai, jo aap chaahen to lekar
shrotaaon ko sunaayen to bahut achchha lagegaa. ek Charlie hota
tha 'comedian', unhone Charlie 'comedian' se gaana gawaaya aur gaana

VSD: haan, nakal hai. dekhiye yeh to Naushad saahab ne aapko Vividh
Bharati mein hi bataaya tha ki woh jo gaana hai "jaadu nagari se aaya
hai koi jaadugar", uski 'tune' mere geet se nakal kee huyi hai. woh
jo ek film thi Namaste, uska ek 'tune' main aap ko bataayun,
(sings) "dil na lage mora man na lage, 'neck-tie'waale baabu ko bhi
laate koi re.... jaadu nagari se aaya hai koi jaadugar". to yeh
namaste film aayi thi 1941 vagerah mein, aur CID aayi baad mein,
kuchh 12 saal baad mein, woh Nayyar saahab jo hain, jaisa ki Naushad
saahab ne kahaa ki 'mera gaana 'lift' kiya gaya hai'.

Lachhi mein jo hai isko Mohd Rafi saahab ne gaaya tha aur bahut
behatareen gaana tha, main aapko uski ek 'line' sunaata hoon

KPS: jee jee

VSD: (sings) "jagwaala melaa yaaron thoDi der da, hans de ya raat
langi pataa nahi saver da...". yeh gaana peechhe reh gaya aur woh
gaana aage nikal gaya. isi tarah se aur bhi gaane the jo Punjabi mein
the. ek gaana tha jise Noorjehan ne gaaya tha, (sings) "huk meri
kismat so gayi jaago huzoor re", isey phir film Chhoti Bhabhi mein
Husnlal Bhagatram ne 'lift' kiya, (sings) "Khushi ka zamaana gaya
rone se ab kaam hai, pyar iska naam tha judaai iska naam hai..." to

mein, to us 'picture' se maine yahaan kaam shuru kiya tha.

AJ: achchha. is tarah aap film sangeet ke jagat mein pehla qadam
rakhaa, film sangeetkaar ke roop mein

HB: haan jee, haan

AJ: to uske baad aap kai filmon mein sangeet dete rahe aur aap ne kai
kalaakaaron ko, naye naye kalaakaaron ko 'chance' diya hogaa, gawaaya
hoga unse?

HB: bhagwaan ki meherbaani rahi ki chalta hi gaya sab. hamne bahut
saari 'picture'-en banaayi Ranjit mein, phir chhoD diya
aur 'freelancer' ke roop mein kaam karna shuru kiya. aur
phir 'partition' ke baad bahut se log Lahore se yahaan aa gaye, phir

AJ: matlab aap ne filmon ka nirmaN bhi kiya. aap sangeetkaar aur
filmkaar dono rahe.

HB: jee haan, mera chhoTa bhaai Gulshan Behl, jo 'producer' hai N C
Films ke naam se, ham dono 'partner' hain, aur unhone film shuru kee,
ham dono bhaaiyon ne milke, pehli 'picture' hamne shuru kee Lal Pari
se hamne shuru kee.

AR: 'singing' ke 'field' mein, usse pehle main 'composer', yaani main
pehle c'omposer' hoon baad mein 'singer' hoon, 'composing' ka bahut

MS: waaha, kya baat hai! aap keval 10-12 saal ke the aur aapne itni
umdaa Ghazal 'compose' kar liya tha. bahut achchha lag raha hai. un
dino ko yaad karte huye koi gaana sun liya jaaye, phir aage baat
karte hain? phir aapke 'albums' par aate hain.

AR: "agar tum mil jaayo zamaana chhoD denge ham". is geet ke baare
mein yeh kahoonga ki 2003 mein mera ek 'album' aaya tha Ek Dard Sabhi
Ko Hota Hai, usmein ek geet tha "agar tum mil jaayo zamaana chhoD
denge ham", woh baad mein Zeher film mein 2005 mein aaya,
alag 'singers' ne gaaya, lekin meri 'composition, singing'

Chaudhury. Shravani-ji, aapka bahut bahut swaagat hai Vividh Bharati

SC: Ashok-ji, bahut bahut shukriya, yahaan aake bahut Khushi mehsoos
ho rahi hai, mere guruji yahaan aa chuke hain aur is vajah se yeh
jagah mujhe bahut paawan lag raha hai, aur 'thank you so much for
inviting me'.

AS: aap ne guru ki baat kee to ham yeh bhi jaanna chaahenge ki kinse
aap ne seekha.

SC: sabse pehle maine sangeet vishaarad kee hai Shrimati Shashikala
Kaikani-ji ke paas se, Bharati Vidya Bhawan, Chaupati. uske baad
Shrimati Shubha Gurtu-ji se 'semi-classical' ki taaleem lee, saath
saath Shrimati Shampa Pakrashi, unse bhi lee sangeet ki shiksha, aur
filhaal main Shrimati Shubha Joshi ke paas sangeet ki shiksha le rahi

SC: main West Bengal ki hoon, mera janm Kalkatte mein huya, uske baad
main Cochin, Kerala mein kuchh saal rahi, wahaan se paDhaai kee, uske
baad 'last' 20 saal se main Bambai mein hoon, aur yaheen pe
maine 'Masters' kiya hai Economics mein, St Xaviers se maine 'degree'
kee hai. paDhaai ke saath saath gaana bhi main karti rahi kaafi aur
filhaal to main bilkul isi mein hoon.

AS: bahut achchhi zabaan hai aapki, aur gaayiki mein zabaan ka ek
mahatwa hota hai, talaffuz ka ek mahatwa hota hai, aur jaise baatchit
ke dauraan bataaya aap ne ki aap ko Ghazal aur Thumri mein mahaarath
haasil hai, balki aap seekh bhi rahi hain, to in sangeet ki vidhaaon
mein zabaan ka ek mahatwa hota hai.

SC: sahi baat hai

AS: shuruwaat se hi aapko sangeet ki taraf rujhaan raha hai?

SC: bachpan mein sangeet ki taraf rujhaan kam hi thi main kahoongi,
meri 'mummy' ne bahut, kyunki woh gaati theen aur jaisa ki
ek 'married family' mein hota hai, ghar-baar ki taraf unka dhyaan
chala gaya aur woh naheen kar paayi. to hamesha unki ichchha thi ki
main gaayun, aur bachpan se mujhe bahut 'encourage' kiya, aur isi
vajah se aaj main gaa rahi hoon.

AS: aap mein kuchh baat aisi hogi jisse unko lagaa hoga ki aap ko is
kshetra mein jaana chaahiye.

SC: yeh aap keh sakte hain, paDhaai ke saath saath, hamaari
jo 'family' thi woh paDhaai ki taraf zyaada, 'academic oriented'
tha, 'but' uske saath saath bahut saari 'music
competitions', 'school' mein, 'trophies' main jeet-ti thi 'for the
schoolo', aur ek bahut 'gutsy', main Khud jaake naam
deke, 'competition' jeet ke ghar aa jaati thi, to yeh jo baat hai
bhagwaan shaayad kisi kisi mein dete hain, jo baat 'performer' mein
hona zaroori hai, ki jo aapka hunar hai woh aap logon ke saamne
rakhen.

AS: aaKhir yeh 'performing art' hai.

SC: yeh 'performing art' hai, aap aankh naheen chura sakte logon se.
aap jab tak 'stage' pe hain aapko sabhi se aankh milaake apna jo
hunar hai woh pesh karna hai. unko lagaa ki chalo, isi ko agar thoDaa
aage baDhaaya jaaye, paDhaai ke saath saath, use 'equal importance'
diya jaata tha.

AS: sahi baat hai! ab tak is kshetra mein aap ne kya kya kaam kiya
hai?

SC: sabse pehle to main All India Radio ki 'graded artiste' hoon.
main abhi kuchh saal se gaa rahi hoon 'radio' pe. baaki, Sur
Shringaar Samsad, Bambai ke, kal ke kalaakaar sammelan, kaafi yuvaa
mahotsav, 'youth festivals', Dada Matunga Cultural Center, Nehru
Center, in sab mein main bhaag le chuki hoon. aur ek baat jo main
kehna chaahti hoon ki Sa Re Ga Ma, Aadaab Arz Hai, jo 'TV programmes'
ho chuke hain...

AS: aajkal jiska chalan bahut zyaada hai...

SC: bahut zyaada hai, jo 'reality shows' aaj, jo itne
achchhe 'artistes' sab aa rahe hain in 'shows' mein se, kuchh saal
pehle main bhi isi mein thi, 'but' aaj mera jo rujhaan jo alag kism
ki 'music' ki taraf hai, isliye shaayad main ismein naheen hoon,
lekin main bhi ismein se guzar chuki hoon. ismein bhi maine 'prizes'

AS: iske baawjood aap ne sangeet ke kshetra mein bahut achchha naam
kamaaya hai, aur ham samajhte hain ki aage bhi isi tarah se kamaati
rahengi aap, ummeed hai aap se. yeh jo sangeet ka kshetra hai yeh to
bahut baDaa hai, par aap ne jo chuna hai Ghazal aur Thumri, aap
praathamikta kise deti hain?

SC: dekhiye, aapka 'commercial' hona zaroori hai, aapka rujhaan kis
taraf hai yeh alag baat hai, lekin logon ko kya pasand hai yeh bahut
zaroori hai, aapko agar logon tak pahunchna hai to unhe kya pasand
hai yeh aapko dekhna hai, to main samajhti hoon ki Ghazal ek zariya
hai jisse main zyaadaatar logon tak pahunch sakti hoon. isi tarah
aage ke liye kuchh 'plan' hai, 'fusion', 'exactly pop album' to
naheen kahoongi, 'classical' ko agar aap 'instruments', 'westernized'
karke agar aap pesh karen, usi ko 'fusion' aajkal kahaa jaa raha hai,
to us tarah ki koshish hai aage, aage kuchh 'sponsors' achchhe mile
to kaam aisa kuchh kar sakte hain. baaki main to kahoongi 'my first
love is semi-classical' Thumri gaana. lekin haan, 'commercial' baat
ko dhyaan mein rakhna bhi to bahut zaroori hai aajkal.

Ghazal 'singer' ke haiseeyat se main logon tak pahunch paayun, dilee
tamanna hai ki apna jo fan hai woh logon ke saamne pesh karoon aur
jahaan jahaan bahut baDe baDe sangeetkaar, 'all over the world'
jahaan jahaan 'perform' kar rahe hain, wahaan sab jagah 'perform'

mein jismein unhe gawaaya tha sangeetkaar Hansraj behl ne, unhe agle
kai saalon tak kaDee sangharsh karni paDee choTi ki gaayika banne ke
liye, kyunki un dino unki baDi bahan Lata Mangeshkar raaj kar rahi
theen har sangeetkaar ki dhuno par. 50 ke dashak ke aaKhir tak bas do
hi naam shirsh par reh gaye - Lata Mangeshkar aur Asha Bhosle.

Majrooh Sultanpuri ke bol hain aur sangeet hai Chitragupt ka. sunte

sangeet ke liye sabse behetareen dashakon mein se ek tha. is dashak
mein jahaan ek or lokpriya sangeetkaaron ki kataar lagi huyi thi,
jaise ki Naushad, S D Burman, Roshan, Madan Mohan, Shankar Jaikishan,
Ravi, O P Nayyar, Hemant Kumar, Salil Chaudhury, aur phir Kalyanji
Anandji, Laxmikant Pyarelal aur R D Burman jaise sangeet dhoom machaa
rahe the, waheen doosri taraf kai aise sangeetkaar bhi the jinki apni
alag pehchaan thi, yeh sangeetkaar bhale hi kamcharchit rahe, lekin
unke sangeet ki miThaas mein koi kamee naheen thi, unki
srijansheelata mein, unki anooThi pratibha ke baare mein koi doraay
naheen tha. aise hi ek kamcharchit sangeetkaar ki sangeet rachanaa
pesh hai ASha Bhosle ki aawaaz mein.

yeh jaanne ke liye utsuk hoon ki aap ne 'acting' aur gaayan ka
kshetra kyun chhoD diya?

GZ: baaki jitne kaam kar raha hoon, usi se log kaafi pareshaan hain,

GZ: jee haan, yaani chhoTaa nashaa hai, main isey kam naheen maantaa,
nashaa chhoTaa hai.

AS: to 'acting' kabhi aapne rangmanch mein kiya hai? kabhi 'stage' se
aapka taalluqaat naheen raha? kabhi 'acting' naheen kee?

GZ: naheen, 'acting' kee hai waise, woh bhi majbooran kee hai, kabhi
chanda jamaa karne ke liye kee hai, IPTA ke zamaane mein 'plays' mein
kaam kiya hai, isliye ki chanda jamaa karne ke liye, isliye naheen
ki 'actor' banna hai. ek aadh filmon mein 'acting' kar chuka hoon,
jaise Basu ki filmon mein, saari duniya jaanegi ki unhone 'lunch' ke
liye bulaaya aur 'acting' karwa liya, muft mein 'lunch' naheen
khilaaya.

AS: aur jahaan tak 'singing' ka sawaal hai...

GZ: dekhiye main bahut besuraa hoon, bahut hi besuraa hoon

AS: yeh to aap Taalnewaali baat keh rahe hain taaki ham aapse yeh na
keh den ki aap apna ek geet gungunaaiye.

GZ: naheen Anuradha-ji, aisa naheen hai, main isiliye kamalm thaamaa
hai ki jo sur gale se naheen nikal sakti woh haath se nikal jaaye.

AS: achchha Gulzar-ji, yeh bataaiye ki aap geetkaar bhi hain aur
lekhak bhi hain. to aapne pehle kaun sa kaam shuru kiya, yaani geet
lekhan shuru kiya yaa lekhak ke roop mein shuru kiya tha?

GZ: main ek geet lekar is 'film industry' mein daaKhil huya
tha, "mora gora ang lai le, mohe shyaam rang dai de", jee haan, is
geet se saath shaamil huya tha is 'film industry' mein, Bimal-da ki
film mein.

AS: Bandini

GZ: jee haan, Bandini ka gaana tha, Bimal-da ke yahaan is film ke
gaane likhne jaa rahe the, uske liye meer dost Debu Sen woh le gaye
the Bimal-da ke paas. Sachin-da ke liye yeh pehla gaana likha tha.
aur uske saath hi 'film industry' mein daKhil ho gaya.

GZ: jee haan, yeh maine filmon ki baat kee. shaayri to chal hi rahi
thi. ab bhi, balki, is qadar shaayri ke baGair to Khair saans  naheen
aati. jitne bhi 'prose' likhoon, jitne bhi nazar likhoon, sher zaroor
kehta hoon, aur filmon mein bhi koshish karta hoon ki jahaan pe log
gaano se parhez karke guzar haate hain, main koshish karta hoon ki
gaane zaroor likhoon. aur aksar 'actress' ko shaayar banaa  dete
hain, baDaa mazaa aata hai, lekin ek hi tarah se shaayar naheen, aap
ne meri filmon mein shaayar ka 'character' zaroor dekha hogaa, aur
har dafaa ek alag kism ka shaayar hai, to woh ek aur saath mein mera
peshaa hai ki shaayron ko pehchaante raho, khojte raho, DhoonDte
raho. pichhli film Namkeen mein, agar aapko yaad ho to ek goongee ko
shaayar banaaya hai maine, Mitthu us 'character' ka naam hai, Shabana
ne woh 'role' kiya hai, aur woh bol naheen paati, goongee hai, lekin

GZ: baaqaayda naheen likha, lekin 52-53 ka jo 'period' hai, aur IPTA
mein aur PSS ki 'meetings' mein, yaani Punjabi Sahitya Sabha, to us
zamaane mein Punjabi mein nazmen likhee, kavitaayen likhee. phir
bangaali mein, zabardasti kisi ne, koshish kee thi,
lekin 'professionally' naheen.

AS: achchha, aap doosron ki filmon mein naheen likhte?

GZ: ab doosre log mujhe mauka naheen dete, aur main shaayri kahe
baGair kaise baaz aa jaayun!

AS: (laughs) bahut Khoob! achchha Gulzar saahab, yeh bataaiye ki,
lekhak ke baare mein kuchh charcha ho jaaye, geetkaar ke baare mein
to hamne jaan liya. to yeh bataaiye ki ek achchha lekhak banne ke
liye aap logon ko kya jaankaari dena chaahenge?

GZ: dekhiye, achchha 'writer' kaise banaa jaata hai yeh kehna to
baDaa mushkil hai, baDaa mushkil hai bataana, yeh 'formula' haath lag
gaya hota to main achchha 'writer' ban gaya hota.

AS: (laughs) jo ki aap hain, isiliye ham jaanna chaahte hain ki...

GZ: main itna kehna chaahoonga ki filmon mein likhne ke liye film
ka 'medium' jaanna zaroori hai, yahaan 'radio' par likhne ke
liye 'radio' ka 'medium' jaanna zaroori hai, aur 'stage' par likhne
ke liye 'stage' ka 'medium' jaanna zaroori hai. to 'on the whole'
achchha 'writer' banne ke liye aapke apne ahsaasaat hain, aur
usko 'extract' karne ke liye aapki zabaan, ki kahaan tak aapko
zabaan  aati hai aur kahaan tak haath chalaana aap jaante hain. uske
liye zabaan ka jaanna bahut zaroori hai. filmon ke liye do teen
cheezen zaroori hai, jismein se 'screenplay' bahut zaroori
hai. 'screenplay', sach kahiye to 'screenplay' hi 'direction'
hai, 'director' ki pehli 'stage' bhi 'screenplay' hi se shuru hoti
hai, ki woh film ko kis tarah se pesh karta hai. aur woh tabhi jaana
jaa sakta hai jab aane film ka 'medium' seekh liya ho. agar film
ki 'medium' ko na jaante hon, film ki jo 'technical requirements'
hain unhe na jaante hon, to 'screenplay' likhna mushkil hai. aap soch
sakte hain lekin likhna mushkil hai. mujhe mehsoos hota hai ki
kahaani sunaana, jaise ki hamaari daadi naani sunaati hai, 'that is
the simplest form of screenplay'. kyunki naani jab kahaani sunaati
hain to hansi mazaak mein, thapkiyaan deti huyi sunaati hain to
woh 'dramatize' karti hain. har 'sequence' ko kis tarah
se 'dramatize' karna hai yeh woh jaanti hain. jab aap beech mein
unghte hain to phir se woh Daraa deti hain, buDDha aayega, falaana
aayegaa, film mein baDi hoshiyaari se aapko dekhna paDtaa hai ki

AS: bahut achchha bataaya aapne. aur uske baad 'dialogues'?

GZ: achchhe 'dialogues' ke liye apni apni sharte hain, apne apne
mizaaj hain, mujhe 'dialogues' woh achchhe lagte hain jo 'dialogues'
na lage. matlab, 'author' ki apni 'personality', uske
Khayaalaat 'character' ki 'personality' par 'reflect' naheen honi
chaahiye mera yeh Khayaal hai. main ek 'motor garage' mein kaam kiya
karta tha kisi zamaane mein. bahut pehle ki baat hai yeh. aur ek
chhoTa sa aadmi tha, chhoTe kad waala, aur ek bahut baDe, oonche
kadwaale 'mechanic' ke saath jhagDaa kar liya. aur gaali galoch,
jaisa 'motor garage' mein hota hai, aur woh baDaa waala us chhoTe se
aadmi ko maar naheen paa raha tha kyunki bahut chhoTaa aur buzurg

GZ: kyunki jab tak woh 'character' se nikla na lage to woh achchha na
lage, aur aise aap ko roz-marra ki zindagi mein kitne log milte hain
jisne baat kee aur aap ne taali bajaaee? aisa o naheen hotaa.
