sab 'acoustic' tha, saarangi woh bajaa rahe hain to saarangi hi hota
tha, aaj 'electronics' mein kaafi woh sab 'tones' nikal jaate hain to
dil ki gehraaee ki woh cheez na aapko samajh aayegi aur na aap 'feel'
karenge.

RB: Vijeyta-ji, jab jab aapki aur Sulaxana-ji ki abhinay aur gaayan
ki baat nikalti hai to shrotaaon ke man mein ek sawaal zaroor aata
hai ki aap dono ne abhinay aur gaayan, dono ko saath saath aage
baDhaane ka socha, lekin aap aisa naheen kar paayeen ismein kitna
sach hai?

VP: Sulaxana-ji ne to mere se bahut zyaada 'struggle' kiya hai 'life'
mein, woh jab gaana chaahti thi to bahut baDe baDe 'singers' the unke
saamne, Lataji theen, Ashaji theen, jinse 'compete' karna
har 'singer' ke bas ki baat naheen thi. to woh 'genre' bahut
zyaada 'difficult' tha na ki aaj ka. aaj ka jo daur hai
ismein 'singers' ke liye raastaa seedhaa aur 'easy' ho gaya
hai 'chance' milne ke liye. pehle ki tarah 'difficult' naheen
hai 'because' aajkal itna 'talented' mahaan 'singer' saamne mujhe
naheen lagta koi hai.

RB: achchha chaliye, hamne aapke abhinay ki baat kee, aapke sangeet
ki baat kee, aur aapne bataaya ki aapne apna 'album'...

VP: maine apna ek 'album' banaaya hai Propose, jismein Sonu Nigam ne
do gaane gaaye hain mere saath, Hariharan ne do gaane gaaye hain,
iska main ek mukhDaa sunaati hoon, (sings) "koi sapna banke koi apna
banke nainon mein aaye chheDe sataaye main kya karoon kya na karoon
haaye"

RB: ab main aap se 'propose' yeh kar rahi hoon (VP laughs) ki Vijeyta
Shrivastava jab ghar pe hoti hain, jab sangeet se unhe fursat milti
hai, to woh kya karti hain, kyunki aap ke paas se jab main guzree to
khaane ki bahut pyaari Khushboo aayi.

VP: (laughs) jab main ghar pe rehti hoon to mujhe ghar ki safaai ka
zyaada shauk hai, mujhe har cheez bahut saaf chaahiye, safaai ka
bahut shauk hai, aur khaana pakaane ka bahut shauk hai. to zyaadaatar
mere ghar mein khaana banaake ke liye 'cook' hai, mahaaraaj, par main
hamesha koshish karti hoon ki jab bhi fursat mile to Khud
apni 'dishes' Khud banaayun, kyunki aap jaante hain ki apne haath se,
kahin bhi aap chale jaayen, apne haath se banaayi cheez agar log
taareef karen aur pasand karen to bahut Khushi milti hai.

VP: meri pasandida 'dish' hai, ek main banaati hoon "dahi baingan",
Laxmikant Pyarelal ke Pyarelal-ji hamesha mujhse kehte hain
ki 'Vijeyta, tumhara dahi baingan mujhe bhejo, mujhe bahut pasand
hai' (both laughs), to woh ek mera 'special dish' hai.

RB: ghar ka rakh-rakhaav aur khaana banaane ka jo shauk hai iske
alaawaa Vijeyta ke aur kya kya shauk hain, aur Vijeyta ki ichchhaayen
kya hain abhi?

VP: meri ichchha to yahi hai abhi ki main phir se ek 'singer' ki
tarah saamne aayun, main abhi ek aur 'album' banaa rahi hoon, Aadesh
jiska 'music' de rahe hain, aur main usmein lagi huyi hoon, ham
uspe 'work' kar rahe hain, 'compositions' ban rahe hain, Javed Akhtar

On the authority of the ancient texts, it is accepted that music and chants embody positive energy. The creation of the universe and all its creatures, comes from the primordial sound – Brahm Naad.

VISION

His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of the Art of Living Foundation, which is the largest volunteer based Non-Government Organisation (NGO) in the world, has conceptualized this concert to capture the very essence of the universe and reinforce the supreme energy of music.In keeping with His vision and mission of a stress-free, violence-free planet, where individuals contribute towards the goal of a One-World Family, this initiative resonates with a two-fold purpose. It endeavors to uplift the practitioners of the musical discipline, and to simultaneously revive this ancient legacy of India. Moreover, it is intended to epitomize the universality of music, a discipline that can cut across boundaries and countries, to spread the message of peace and harmony through the unifying power of its vibrations.

THE EVENT: 2 DAYS – 1000 SITARS – 1 STAGE

For the first time ever, 1000 sitarists will play together, on one platform, in a two-day concert. This 1000-piece sitar orchestral ensemble will have the participation of national and international sitar players from all over the country and the world. The initiative is being spearheaded by Art of Living singer, Ms. Chitra Roy, M.Phil in classical music from Delhi University with a gold medal, who has also received advance training at the Gwalior gharana.
The instrument of emphasis in this symphony, the sitar, embodies the rich ad regal musical heritage of India. A 1000 sitarists, accompanied by musicians on the flute, tabla, dholak, sarod, sarangi, pakhawaj, veena, keyboard, mrudangam and ghatam, will fuse skillful composition with artistic expression to create a potent symphony.

OBJECTIVE

This live concert will provide a platform for world-renowned as well as budding, international as well as local exponents of this Indian art, on a platform that will facilitate enhanced exposure, awareness and appreciation of the rich legacy of India's ancient and diverse culture. Through the sheer energy and power of music, this first-ever 1000 sitar ensemble shall endeavour to transcend narrow prejudices, to overcome chaos, to celebrate the joy and the power of the multi-ethnic cultural vitality of India, and to spread the message of peace and harmony throughout the world.

MS: to hamne sunaa hai ki shuruwaat mein aap ne Vividh Bharati mein
kuchh farmaaishi patra bhi bheje the, kya yeh sach hai?

LM: haan, usko to bahut saal ho gaye (laughs), main 1947-48, tab
shaayad Vividh Bharati naam naheen tha, ham log 'radio' ke
farmaaishi 'programme'- on mein patra baiThke likhte the, baDaa
achchha lagta tha aur gaane sunte the, aur 'wait' kart thi main ki
mera naam kab aayega (laughs)

MS: (laughs) 'oh my God' (laughs). achchha Lata didi, pichhle 50
varshon mein Vividh Bharati ne aapke geeton ko aam janata tak
pahunchaaya hai, aur aam jantaa ka pyaar aap tak pahuncha hai, aur
aap kai baar muKhaatib bhi huyi hain janata se. to aapko kaisa lagta
hai itna pyaar paakar didi?

LM: mujhe bahut Khushi hoti hai, ab mujhe is baat ki Khushi zyaada
hoti hai ki log mujhe itna pyaar karte hain, aur log mujhe itna
aashirvaad dete hain, yeh mere liye bahut baDi baat hai aur main
samajhti hoon ki mera naam jo hai woh janata ki pyaar ki wajah se hi
hai. woh hamesha mere saath rahen, unka aashirvaad sadaa mere saath
rahen to kise Khushi naheen hogi, mujhe bahut Khushi hai is baat ki.

MS: bahut achchha lag raha hai didi aapki baaten sunkar, aap iotni
achchhi udgaar vyakt kar rahi hain (Lata laughs). didi, 1957 mein
shuruwaat huyi thi Vividh Bharati ki. tab se lekar aaj tak sangeet
ke kai daur guzre hain, aap ki nazron mein sabse sunehra daur kaun
sa raha hai?

LM: sureela daur hamaare hisaab se 60s aur 70s raha hai. bas 80 tak.
jitne gaane hamne gaaye hain aur jitna kaam hamne kiya hai, woh aaj
bhi matlab main yaad karti hoon to mujhe Khushi hoti hai ki aisa bhi
kaam huya karta tha aur ham log, haalaanki bhaagdauD bahut hoti thi,
lekin kaam jo achchha hota tha woh to man ko shaanti to milti hai na!

MS: jee. aur haalaanki aap to naye daur ke sangeetkaaron ke saath
bhi 'recording' karti rahi hain, to aap ko kis tarah ke ahsaasaat
hote hain, apne puraane daur ko yaad karti hain to kya lagta hai
aapko?

LM: puraana jo kaam tha, usse aaj ke kaam mein bahut fark hai yeh to
main maanti hoon par badlaav to aate hi rehte hain na, badlaav to
prithvi ka niyam hai, to 'music' bahut 'chnage' huya hai, logon ka
rahan sahan, bachchon ki aadaten bahut alag ho gayi hain, to woh to
hai, lekin hamne jo kaam kiya hai us par hamein ek tarah se naaz hai.

janamdin lagbhag aaspaas hai, 28 September ko aapka janamdin aur 3
October ko Vividh Bharati ka janamdin hai. to aap bataaiye ki
vyaktigat roop se aap apna janamdin kaise manaati hain?

LM: (laughs)

MS: (laughs) mujhe pataa hai didi aap is baat ko Taalengi, main
bahut himmat karke poochh rahi hoon is baat ko (laughs)

yeh 'programme' kiya tha

LM: to main sabki bahut aabhaari hoon, bahut bahut hi zyaada, ki
main unki hreeNee hoon ki woh mere liye sochte hain itna zyaada.

MS: didi, haal hi mein aap ne kuchh bhajan gaaye hain, zaraa unke
baare mein bhi bataayengi?

LM: bhajan, maine Ganesh Mantra gaaye hain, abhi usak 'record' aaya
hai Sarvamangal Ganesh karke, aur usmein Sanskrit shlok hain, apne
yahaan jo Ganesh Gaayitri hoti hai, woh hai, aur Laxmi Ganesh ka bhi
hai, bas alag alag tarah ka kiya hai, aur maine suna hai ki woh baht
achcha chal raha hai. isse pehle maine bhajan keeye hain, Meera
Bahajn mere bahut 'popular' hain, par is tarah ka maine kiya naheen

hai, main sunti rehti hoon, mujhe itna maaloom naheen hai, par maine
suna hai ki woh bhi bahut achchha jaa raha hai.

MS: aur woh bhajanon mein se thoda bahut agar aapko abhi yaad aa
raha ho to...

LM: naa, main abhi to sunaa naheen sakoongi.

MS: (laughs)

LM: main aapko zaroor sunaati, lekin is waqt mujhe yaad bhi naheen
aa rahe hain aur.... amin is wqat aapko sunaa naheen paayungi.

MS: koi baat naheen!

LM: mera Meera Bhajan koi bajaa deejiye jo 'non-filmi' ho.

hoon, yaa 'recording' chal rahi ho to beech beech mein kisi se
poochti hoon ki zaraa 'radio' par pataa karke bataayo ki kaun kya
khel raha hai.

MS: achchha, aur kabhi 'radio' par apne gaaye huye gaane sune hain
aapne, Vividh Bharati par Khaas taur se?

LM: haan, kai baar sune hain, kai baar sune hain, aur mera Khayaal
hai Vividh Bharati par sainikon ke liye bhi ek 'programme' aata hai

laughs) ham ab bhi kahenge ki Lata didi khaa sakti hain to ham bhi
khaa sakte hain (both laughs)

MS: achchha didi yeh bataaiye ki aap ab bhi riyaaz karti hain,
kyunki abhi haal mein jo gaane 'record' huye hain, aisa lagta hai ki
aapke riyaaz mein koi kamee naheen hai.

LM: riyaaz ka to sambandh hai gaane ke saath

MS: mere kehne ka matlab tha ki aap pehle to ghanTon riyaaz karti
hongi, kya ab bhi aap riyaaz karti hain?

LM: main ghar pe gaana sunti to hoon, sunke main 'decide' karti hoon
ki yeh gaana gaana hai ke naheen. abhi itne saal ho
gaye, 'rehearsal' karna to ham bhool hi gaye, pehle kya hota tha ki
15-15 din 'rehearsal' hota tha, aur phir gaana 'record' karte the,
phir ek aisa daur aaya ki ham log 'set' par jaate the, waheen gaana
sunte the, waheen yaad karte the aur waheen 'record' ho jaata tha.
aisa bhi huya, woh chaalu raha, aur ab to aisa huya hai ki 'music'

MS: achchha kya aapko yaad hai ki kitni bhaashaaon mein aap ne gaane
gaaye hain?

LM: maine 36 bhaashaaon mein gaaye hain

swaagat karta hoon. Noorjehan-ji, swaagat to aapka kar liya,

chhoTi si shikaayat bhi karoonga, shikaayat yeh hai ki baDi der kee
mehmaan aate aate, 35 saal lagaa deeye aap ne, ham intezaar karte
rahe aapka. aap ke gaano se, puraane geeton se bhi aur naye geeton
se bhi apna dil behlaate rahe. ho sakta hai aap ko bhi Hindustaan ki

apna ghar ujaaDkar jaana to pasand naheen karta, haalaat aise the
mujhe jaana paDaa. aur yeh to aap naheen keh sakte ki aap logon ne
mujhe yaad rakha aur maine naheen rakha, apne apne haalaat hi ki
bina pe hota hai kisi kisi ka waqt nikaalna, aur bilkul yakeen
karen, agar main sabko bhool jaati to main yahaan kaise aati!
(laughs). magar mere bachche bahut chhoTe the, unki parvarish, unka
paDhaana, aur wahaan jaakar bhi allaah ki meherbaani se mujhe bahut
pyaar milaa, main dekhti hoon ki wahaan par bhi log itna pyaar bahut
kam logon ko karte hain. is maamle mein main baDi Khushnaseeb hoon,
jisko jitna pyaar diya jaata hai, mujhe hazaaron darje zyaada wahaan

rahi thi Ceylon se, iska badaa Gham huya ki is waqt jab main aayi
yahaan to woh na mili, aur yeh tamanna thi ki main Dilip-ji ko
miloon, Pran-ji ko miloon, aur yahaan par aapaa, Mrs Mehboob hain,
yeh log hain, Sitara-ji hain, Sajjad saahab 'music director', aur

NJ: Intezaar ke gaane sabhi ko yaad hai mera Khayaal hai, uske baad
Dupatta ke gaane, Anarkali ke gaane, Dosti ke gaane. Heer Ranjha
mein Khurshid Anwar saahab ka 'music' tha, Punjabi 'picture', mera
Khayaal hai wahaan ho 'picture'-en ho rahi hai Punjabi mein, woh
baut umdaa ho rahi hain, Urdu mein bhi achchha huya. aur ab jo nayi

se "door" bhi kahaa jaata hai, "door" ki 'feelings' bhi hoti hai,

VSD: Saigal ko samajhne ke liye thoDa Gaur se sunna paDta hai,
kyunki doosre gaano mein 'orchestra' aa jaata hai, Saigal saahab ke
gaano mein 'orchestra' itna naheen rehta tha, lekin unke gaano ki ek
baar agar lat lag jaaye, main aap ko bataayun, main jab chhoTa tha
mujhe Saigal saahab se itni chiDh thi, mere ghar mein jo 'records'
the Saigal ke maine toD deeye, ghar mein taaki koi bajaaye na. phir
ekdam se jab baDaa huya, ek 'friend' ke ghar gaya to khiDki
waala 'gramophone' tha wahaan, to usmein usne lagaaya "ab main kaa

hai itna pyaar paakar didi?

LM: mujhe bahut Khushi hoti hai, ab mujhe is baat ki Khushi zyaada
hoti hai ki log mujhe itna pyaar karte hain, aur log mujhe itna
aashirvaad dete hain, yeh mere liye bahut baDi baat hai aur main
samajhti hoon ki mera naam jo hai woh janata ki pyaar ki wajah se hi

jitne gaane hamne gaaye hain aur jitna kaam hamne kiya hai, woh aaj
bhi matlab main yaad karti hoon to mujhe Khushi hoti hai ki aisa bhi
kaam huya karta tha aur ham log, haalaanki bhaagdauD bahut hoti thi,
lekin kaam jo achchha hota tha woh to man ko shaanti to milti hai na!

MS: jee. aur haalaanki aap to naye daur ke sangeetkaaron ke saath
bhi 'recording' karti rahi hain, to aap ko kis tarah ke ahsaasaat
hote hain, apne puraane daur ko yaad karti hain to kya lagta hai
aapko?

LM: puraana jo kaam tha, usse aaj ke kaam mein bahut fark hai yeh to
main maanti hoon par badlaav to aate hi rehte hain na, badlaav to
prithvi ka niyam hai, to 'music' bahut 'chnage' huya hai, logon ka
rahan sahan, bachchon ki aadaten bahut alag ho gayi hain, to woh to
hai, lekin hamne jo kaam kiya hai us par hamein ek tarah se naaz hai.

MS: achchha didi yeh bataaiye ki aap ab bhi riyaaz karti hain,
kyunki abhi haal mein jo gaane 'record' huye hain, aisa lagta hai ki
aapke riyaaz mein koi kamee naheen hai.

LM: riyaaz ka to sambandh hai gaane ke saath

MS: mere kehne ka matlab tha ki aap pehle to ghanTon riyaaz karti
hongi, kya ab bhi aap riyaaz karti hain?

LM: main ghar pe gaana sunti to hoon, sunke main 'decide' karti hoon
ki yeh gaana gaana hai ke naheen. abhi itne saal ho
gaye, 'rehearsal' karna to ham bhool hi gaye, pehle kya hota tha ki
15-15 din 'rehearsal' hota tha, aur phir gaana 'record' karte the,
phir ek aisa daur aaya ki ham log 'set' par jaate the, waheen gaana
sunte the, waheen yaad karte the aur waheen 'record' ho jaata tha.

MS: achchha kya aapko yaad hai ki kitni bhaashaaon mein aap ne gaane
gaaye hain?

LM: maine 36 bhaashaaon mein gaaye hain
