INTERVIEW WITH MANOHARI SINGH - THE NOTED SAXOPHONE & METAL FLUTE
PLAYER

PART 1

Manohari Singh plays "O mere dil ke chain" on saxophone.

YK: We are fortunate to have you in Vividh Bharati studio today.
Welcome!

MS: Thank you!

YK: You have 40/50 years of experience in saxophone and metal flute.
We would like to know about your childhood days.

MS: I was born in the Hooghly district of West Bengal. I got the
musical instruments in my family only. My father, grandfather, uncle,
all used to play flute. I also started practising flute at home. Then
I came to Calcutta and joined an orchestra band in a place called
Batanagar. It was a Hungarian band, of Joseph Neumann. Both my
paternal and maternal uncles were there.

YK: What was your age at that time?

MS: It was 1942, I was about 13/14 years old.

YK: What about your education then?

MS: I could not study much, I studied in private afterwards.

YK: OK, what happened next?

MS: Then I joined His Master's Voice (HMV) in 1945 as a flute player.
At first I used to play in Bengali songs composed by Kamal Dasgupta.

YK: Kamal Dasgupta, who composed the first private songs of Talat
Mahmood?

MS: Yes, yes. In Calcutta, at the time of Durga Puja every year, some
special songs are released which is a regular thing there. I started
playing these intruments in Bengali and Hindi non-film songs. At that
time I used to play for a very less number of film songs. During
those Puja songs, I met Hemant-da & Salil-da, who use to come there
(in HMV most likely!). Salil-da had a fancy on me. Once there was a
big show in the Eden Gardens. Naushad saahab, Hemant-da, Burman dada
and many others performed in that show. Around that time Hemant-da's
Nagin had become a big hit. So, for this show, they selected the good
musicians from HMV and I was also given the chance to play in that
show. I startec playing saxophone after I joined HMV.

YK: Do you remember which songs you had played for the first time on
your saxophone?

MS: In those days, I used to play "gore gore o baanke chhore",
then "lare lappa lare lappa lai rakh da". I had recorded these
instrumental versions of these songs.

YK: Oh, instrumentals were made in those days also? (surprised)

MS: Yes

YK: So, some LP records were released for these instrumentals?

MS: No, 78 rpm was released.

YK: Oh yes, it was the 50s, this 78 rpm was known as "patthar ke
record".

MS: Yes, so in that show, Basu, who was my very good friend, had also
played. Naushad saahab, Burman dada, they were so happy with our
performances that Naushad saahab said, "bulaa lo inko Bombay, agar
yeh log Bombay aa jaayen to hum denge kaam inko". Salil-da used to
travel to Bombay frequently at that time. He also started putting
pressure on me. Hemant-da had also got setteled there. All of them
started calling us. After partition, the Calcutta film industry was
also in a poor state, so we (myself & Basu) decided to move to Bombay.

YK: Basu Chakraborty and Manohari Singh, whom we know as Basu-
Manohari.

MS: Yes, Basu was a good friend of mine since long. Salil-da then
took us to Burman dada. He was doing the background of Madhumati and
Sitaron Se Aage. The songs were completed, only background was
remaining. I did the background in Madhumati.

YK: So, why dont we listen to one song from madhumati at this point?

MS: I did not play in any song of Madhumati, only in the background
music I played key flute. Then in Maya, I first played Saxophone.

YK: We shall come to Maya, but right at this moment, which song of
Madhumati you like me to play?

MS: The best is "Aaja re pardesi"

YK: Why is this song special? What is unique about it?

MS: It is romantic song, see the melody according to the location. In
that respect, the "utaav-chaDhaav" of the "mukhDa" and "antara" are
superb. The song begins witha  low register (hums) 'aaja re', a
fantastic atmosphere builds up in this part. Then the music as well
as the song proceeds step by step, just as romance proceeds step by
step.

YK: You were talking about Maya.

MS: After madhumati, I played in 1 or 2 films and then in Maya. In 1
song, I first played Key flute in the prelude and saxophone in
the "antara".

YK: Waah, waah!

MS: Then this interlude on saxophone.

YK: 'Kya baat hai'! The sound of saxophone makes us move into another
world, a starnge intoxicating effect is there. How do you feel when
you play it?

MS: I have done very hard work on this instrument. I tried to control
it so that it produces good sound, I did a lot of practice.

YK: Saxophone is not an Indian instrument, and I believe at that time
it was not manufactured in India. So how did you get it?

MS: I had purchased this saxophone (the one he had brought for this
interview) from New York. And the first saxophone I used was also
made in America. In Anil Biswas's orchestra, Ram Singh used to play
saxophone, he was Anil-da's assistant. I got inspired after listening
to Ram Singh. When I played for Maya in the Bombay Lab, Pyarelal was
playing violin. He became very happy with my playing and
congratulated me, gave me a gift also. The news became public that a
man has come from Bengal who plays a western instrument in purely
Indian style and peole started knowing me. Kalyanji bhai gave me a
big break and this song by Lata and Hemant-da was an overnight hit.

YK: Which song was it?

MS: "Tumhe yaad hogaa kabhi hum mile the"

YK: Aha ha, what a song!

YK: Other than these, which are the other songs in which you played
saxophone in those initial days?

MS: Then Shankar Jaikishen also called me. Jaikishen-ji had high
respect for me. I played for him first in a duet song of Professor.
Everbody started asking which instrument is this. 'What a feeling has
come out in this tune!' The song was "Awaaz deke humein tum bulaao"

YK: What was special in Shakar Jaikishen's music. They made a
significat contribution in the orchestration side of film music.

MS: Shankar Jaikishen and Naushad used to keep a regular and
permanent orchestra. In every song of Shankar Jaikishen, about 50/60
musicians used to be present. After Shankar Jaikishen, other music
directors like Laxmikant Pyarelal and R D Burman used to keep such
large orchestras. Other music directors kept reasonable orchestras. O
P Nayyar also had a regular orchestra.

YK: Nayyar saahab also called you up?

MS: Yes, wherever I go, requests come for the song "Hai duniya usi ki
zamana usi ka"

YK: Nayyar saahab has a unique style with "joshila" music. Did you
play both saxophone and metal flute in his songs?

MS: Saxophone mostly.

YK: Can you cite few more songs of Nayyar saahab in which you played
saxophone?

MS: "Kitne aTal the tere iraade", then, "Yahi woh jagah hai yahi woh
fizaa hai"

YK: It is heard that O P Nayyar is a hard task master and that he
records a song in a single take?

MS: Yes, if he feels that the take is OK, then no one can ask him for
a retake.

YK: Any memorable incident with Nayyar saahab?

MS: I had played this song (above song) in a show in Delhi. It was a
Defence Show in 1962. Pt nehru, Asha-ji and Lata-ji were present.
Lata-ji sang "Ae mere watan ke logon" composed by C Ramchandra.

YK: Oh, so it was this memorable show!

MS: Yes, I had played flute in "Ae mere watan ke logon". After this
song, I was sitting behind. I did not know that Asha-ji was singing
this song "Yahi woh jagah hai". When she started singing, I could not
control myself and came infront with saxophone and stated playing at
the correct instant. The public was overwhelmed. After coming back,
when Asha-ji told this to Nayyar saahab, Nayyar sshab took out a 100
rupee note and put in my hand.

YK: Wah!, For Bappi Lahiri also, you have played in the memorable
song - chalte chalte.

MS: Yes, Chalte Chalte was a good composition.

YK: You said you had played flute in C Ramchandra's "Ae mere watan ke
logon". how was the experience with him?

MS: I had also played Mandolin for him. In "ae mere watan ke logon",
I had played only flute.

YK: When did you start working with S D Burman?

MS: "gaa mere man gaa yunhi beetaaye jaa din zindegi ke" was the
first song in which I played for Burman dada. Then I played in Solva
Saal. I was Arrangement Assistant in Insaan Jaag Utha. In the
song "Jaanu jaanu ri kaahe khanke hai tore kangna", I played mandolin
with Laxmikant. Then in films like Guide, Jewel Thief, Teen Deviyan,
I did the arrangement.

iske 6 maheene baad, 1943 mein Khayyam ne 'Army join' kar kiya. 3
saal baad 1946 mein filmon ka shauk unhe Mumbai kheench laaye aur woh
ek baar phir juD gaye G A Chishti se. phir woh apne guru Husnlal
Bhagatram se bhi mile. Husnlal Bhagatram ne unse Zohrabai ke saath
film Romeo Juliet mein geet gawaye. uske baad Geeta Dutt aur Meena
Kapoor ke saath bhi unhe gawaaya. aayiye ab ek geet sunte hain film
Aahista Aahista se.

bataur sangeetkaar Khayyam ki pehli film thi Footpath, jiskaa ek

Khayyam ka sangeet bahut hi madhur hai, jo film ki kahaani ko aage
baDhaate hain. iske liye unhe kaDee mehnat karni paDtee hai. woh film
ki poori kahaani paDhne ke baad gaane tayyaar karte hain. yeh kehnaa
mushkil hai ki achchhe sangeet se film chalti hai ya phir film ke
chalne se uskaa sangeet chaltaa hai, is bahas mein hum naheen paDna
chaahte. hum bas yahi kahenge ki Khayyam ka sangeet bahut hi haT ke

Bazaar, Aahista Aahista aur Umraojaan jaisi filmon mein bhi unkaa
sangeet laajawaab tha.

maujooda sangeet se alag gambheer aur laajawaab hai Khayyam ka
sangeet. unke geeton mein Bharatiyata ki garimaa niraali hai. unke
sangeet ke shehdaaiyon ko kuchh aur pyaas hai, chaahat hai unke
sangeet ki. Vividh Bharati ki taraf se Khayyam saahab ko bahut bahut
shubhkaamnaayen. ab deejiye ijaazat Nimmi Mishra ko, namaskaar.

Mere mehboob aur aziz fauji jawaano, aap mera aadaab qabool karen.
Aaj is karyakram mein main apne gaaye kuch filmi aur gair filmi
naghmen lekar aaya hoon, aur kuchh doosre kalakaaron ke gaane bhi
hain. Pehla geet ek gair filmi geet hai jo mera gaaya huya pehla
recorded gaana tha - "Sab din ek samaan nahee rehta tha, ban gaya kya
se kya main". Us samay mujhe yeh pataa naheen tha ki iske alfaaz mere
liye haqeeqat ban jayenge.

Haan saahab, to sun liya aapne mera gaaya pehla gaana. Kundan Lal
Saigal ki hasti kisi taareef ki mohtaaj naheen. sabhi gaayakon ki
tarah main bhi unka pujaari rahaa hoon. unke geeton se mujhe ishq
hai. apna aqeeda hai ki allaah taalaa ne aasmaan-o-zameen ke jitne
sur,lay, aur dard the, unke gale mein bhar diyaa tha. Saigal-saahab
se meri pehli mulaaqaat Kalkatte mein huyi thi, jab unki film 'Meri
Bahan' ki 'shooting' chal rahi thi, aur meri New Theatres mein nayi-
nayi 'entry' huyi thi. Woh pehli mulaaqaat aaj bhi mere zehen mein
hai. Ab main aapko Saigal sahab ka hi gaaya ek geet sunwata hoon, par
Meri Bahen film ka naheen, balki Dushman film ka.

Song: Karoon kya aas niraas bhayi (Dushman)

Main bhi kuch filmon mein bataur hero kaam kiya tha, jaise ki Dil-e-
Nadan, Waris, Sone Ki Chidiya, aur Ek Gaon Ki Kahani. Film Ek Gaon Ki
Kahani mein ek scene tha jismein main ghoda gaadi chalaakar jaata
hoon. To director sahab ne kaha ki is situation mein aapka gaaya ek
gaana zaroor hona chaahiye. Gaana bana, sabhi ko bahut pasand aaya
siwaay ek hasti ke. Aur woh shakhs tha us ghode gaadi ka ghoda. Pataa
nahin kyun us ghode ko gaana pasand naheen aaya! Jaise hi shooting ke
liye gaana chaalu hota, woh ad kar tuk jaata, badi mushkil se phir us
gaane ki shooting huyi. Aap yeh gaana suniye aur aap hi bataaiye ki
is gaane mein aisa kya tha ki woh badtameez ghode aisa bartaav kiya.

Song: Jhoome re neela ambar (Ek Gaon Ki Kahani)

humne apni filmon mein aksar yeh dekhaa hai ki log tasveer se baaten
karte hain, jaise 'husband wife' se, maa bete se, vagerah vagerah.
aur kai baar to tasveer ke honThon par muskuraahaT bhi aa jaati hai.
par mere paas jo tasveer hai woh na muskuraati hai aur na hi kuchh
bolti hai. zaraa aap hi dekhiye yeh kaisi tasveer hai!

Song: Tasveer teri dil mera behlaa na sakegi (Dil-e-Nadan)

1941 mein maine apnaa pehlaa gaana 'record' kiyaa tha, 'recording
room' mein Pankaj Mullick saahab bhi baiThe huye the. unhe meraa
gaana pasand hai. unhone meri taarif kee aur taarif ke saath saath
naseehaten kee jinhe main aaj tak maantaa hoon. unke geeton mein se
yeh gaana bahut pasand hai "piya milan ko jaana".

Song: Piya milan ko jaana (Kapalkundala)

Mujhe bhi dhune banaane ka shauk hai, filmon ke liye naheen, balki
mere gair filmi geeton ke liye. Maine apne kai geeton ka sangeet
tayyaar kiya hai. Ab main aapko aisa hi ek ghazal sunwaane jaa raha
hoon, jise likha hai Shakeel Badayuni ne aur iska tune maine hi
banaayi thi. Aur yakeen maaniye maine poori ghazal ka tune 15 minute
mein tayyaar kar diya tha. Suniye yeh ghazal.

Song: Tumne yeh kya sitam kiya (Non-film Ghazal)

Main aur kuchh chuninda kalaakaar ek baar Sikkim gaye huye the aap
fauji bhaiyon ka manoranjan karne. Tab mujhe samajh mein aaya ki aap
log mujhe aur mere gaaye geeton ko kitna pasand karte hain. Jab bhi
main aap logon ke liye programme pesh karta tha to ek geet ki
farmaaish aksar aati thi. Aur woh geet hai film Sone Ki Chidiya ka,
jismein main hero tha aur is geet mein main aur heroine ek kashti pe
savaar hokar gaate hain. Suniye yeh geet.

Song: Pyar par bas to naheen hai (Sone Ki Chidiya)

dekhiye, yeh Lata Mageshkar aur Manna Dey film Sati Savitri mein ek
doosre se kuchh keh rahe hain. pataa naheen yeh gaana mujhe itna kyun
pasand hai, par bahut achchha lagta hai, aap hazraat bhi suniye.

Song: Tum gagan ke chandrama ho (Sati Savitri)

Kanan Devi, ek aur mahaan fankaar. Unke saath maine New Theatres ki
film Rajlakshmi mein ek chhota sa role kiya tha. Us film mein ek role
tha jismen us character ko ek gaana bhi gaana tha. Director sahab ne

SB: Woh Lahore gaye the. Taqdeer picture ke liye mujhe book kiya tha.

Waqhaan pahunchkar pata chala ki audition hogi, un logon ne takhtposh
bichhaaya, hum chadh gaye, us par baith gaye (SB laughs). Waheen par
maujood the sangeetkaar Master Ghulam Haider sahab. Itne kamaal ke
aadmi maine dekha hi naheen tha. Woh mere walid sahab ko pehchaante

SB: Baba filmon mein mujhe kaam naheen karne nahi denge yeh saaf saaf
keh diya tha, gramophone company aur radio mein gaa rahi ho, bahut ho
gaya, ab iske aage aur naheen, unhone aisa keh diya tha. Mera to film
ke liye screentest bhi ho gaya tha. Lekin baba ne mana kar diya, kaha
ki aur nahi chaahiye. Us zamane mein playback nahi tha, isliye agar
filmon mein gaane ke liye usme acting karna bhi zaroori tha, isliye
filmon mein gaane ka mauka nahi mil paaya. Maine 2/3 saal radio mein

SB: Achchha tha aur kaam karnewale log the. Jab tak music director
nahi kehta ki sab perfect hai, tan tak artiste ko rehearsal karte

Few new programs have been added/modified and all are getting good response.
 
SALAAM INDIA in the morning is a good change...nice to hear a patriotic song every morning before leaving for office.
 
HELLO SAKHI is another welcome change. Ladies all over India seems united when they interact with each other on phone.
 
The new change in JAIMALA is also very nice. Getting good response and much fanfare.
 
I think few more programs are added like (I dont know the name, but one can phone to VBS and tell the review of latest film.)
 
Sujoy, please throw light upon the new arrivals and modified ones.

12 Jan was the death anniversary of famous poet and lyricist Pt
Narendra Sharma. He was also one of the founder members of VIVIDH
BHARATI (he had designed the programme format). VB observed this day
with a number of special programmes.

CHITRASHAALA programme (0655 & 1310 hrs) featured poetry written &
recited by Pt Sharma. The title line of this poem was "Lekar janam
jagat kaaraa mein tumne mukt kiyaa jag jeevan". (Lavanyaji, can we
have the entire text of this poem?) For those who joined late,
Lavanya-ji, a member of this group, is the daughter of Pt Sharma.

EK HI FILM SE (1230 hrs) featured all the songs of BHABHI KI
CHOODIYAN.

As this day also coincides with the death anniv of Kamaal Amrohi, so
Aaj Ke Fankaar was based on him that day. But AAJ KE FANKAAR of 13
Jan (0930 hrs) was based on Pt Narendra Sharma (whose transcript is
already available in the files section).

Though JAIMALA GOLD this week featured actress Nadira, it is expected
that Pt Sharma's Jaimala will be aired in the last week of this month

she was fablous actress...my friend write down a profile of her..few months back for a yahoo group...which is based on bollywood actresses..it was nice to read that profile...so here i m lookin for this programme too..it wud be nice if we got mail based on that programme

As you all might know that actress Nadira passed away yesterday. Vividh
Bharati was quick enough to prepare a special Aaj Ke Fankaar on her and
broadcast it last night at 21:30 hrs. It contained excerpts from her
interview recorded last year that was broadcast in Celluloid Ke Sitare
programme.

I will post some interesting facts from this prog shortly

EPISODE 4 (05/02/2006)

In Kashmir Ki Kali, Shakti Samanta had introduced Sharmila Tagore. He
had seen her photograph in a Bengali magazine and he liked her. He
called her father and fixed an appointment for story narration. Her
father assured that if the story is good, he would allow her to work.
Shakti, with 3 distributors, went to meet Sharmila. The distributors
did not like Sharmila much but Shakti was confident in his choice.

Dialogues from Kashmir Ki Kali (Sharmila Tagore & Shammi Kapoor)

On the very first day of shooting, a god rappo was established
between Sharmila and Shammi Kapoor. The entire team went to Kashmir.
7/8 house boats were rented and rooms in a near-by small hotel were
booked for the unit members. Shooting was help up for 15 days due to
continuous rains. They passed these days catching fish :)

The Bhangra dancers used in the songs were called from Jalandhar
while the other dancers were brought from Mumbai.

Song: Haaye re haaye yeh tere haath mein (Kashmir Ki Kali)

The shooting of Amanush was done in the famous mangrove
forest 'Sundarban' that houses the famous Royal Bengal Tigers. It was
an unforgettable experience for the entire crew. There was only place
where tigers could not enter. It was a plot of land surrounded by
water on all four sides. Tents and boats were used to accommodate a
crew of nearly 150. There were small sharks in the waters, so
instruction was given to the unit not to venture into the waters.
Also, it was instructed not to lean out hands through the boat window
at night as tigers generally hide in the water waiting for a piece of
flesh in the form of a 'human hand'.

During the initial days of Amanush, Samanta used to make frequent
visits to Uttam Kumar's house (Uttam Kumar was the hero of the film).
It was at his place where Samanta met Shyamal Mitra and requested him
to compose the songs of this film. Mitra agreed on the condition that
the lyrics should be good enough.

Song: Dil aisa kisi ne mera toDaa (Amanush)

Shakti Samanta became a fan of Indeevar after he wrote the
extraordinary songs of Amanush. However, the Indeevar song "Kaise koi
jeeye" from Baadbaan was one of Samanta's favourites.

Song: Kaise koi jeeye zeher hai zindegi (Baadbaan)

It was a surprising decision to cast Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila
Tagore in an offbeat film like Amar Prem when the two actors were at
the height of popularity. Motivated by a Bengali film, Samanta went
to its writer and requested that he wanted to make this film in Hindi
with certain changes and asked for the price. The writer listened to
the changes Samanta wanted to make and got agreed. The writer got the
Filmfare Award for Best Screenplay. Before getting started with the
film, Samanta collected a print of the Bengali film and asked
Sharmila to watch it and give her comments in 1 week. The very next
day Sharmila met Samanta and asked, "kab shuru karenge, bataaiye!"

Dialogues from Amar Prem (Sharmila Tagore & Rajesh Khanna)

Shakti Samanta is fan of Sarat Chandra's writings. He points out that
whenever a film has been made out of his novel, it has become a
superhit. Whatever times Devdas was made, each time it has been a
blockbuster. Samanta, however, maintains that it is very difficult to
make a film based on a Bankim Chandra's novel. He still keeps on
reading 'Bankim Rachanavali'.

Song: Raina beeti jaaye (Amar Prem)

As the story and plot suggests, the music of An Evening in Paris was
required to be westernized. Samanta selected the city of Paris as it
was very popular destination in those days. Samanta agrees that there
was nothing special in the story of this film. The dancers were hired
from Paris itself. When a French producer saw this film, he asked
Samanta if he can put few scenes of the film in his film and asked
for the price.

Song: Raat ke humsafar thak ke ghar ko chale (An Evening in Paris)

Samanta says that he got the most satisfaction in those films that
has touched the audience emotionally, like Anuraag. Another
significant film with a morale was Anand Ashram.

Ashram)

I agree, earlier Chitralok used to be full of musical trailors of new
films, but this also has stopped. It seems music & film companies are
more interested in showing their promos in TV only.

Whats happenning to VB these days???? (Exclamation by Sujoy) Here is my observation:
 
 
Vividh Bharati is lacking funds....the crucial problem with them. Govt of India and big oranizations like Prasar Bharati and Doordarshan should take initiative to end Vividh Bharati's financial crisis. Many people ask in their letters as to why VBS need advertisements...and for this their reply is that they need funds.
 
VBS and Doordarshan are the channels which reach throughout India. People love it and understand it. They are national media. The VBS team should do something so that they get more and "bigger" clients for advertisements. They should realise their importance that VBS is still the best radio channel in India and for Indians. People easily get obssessed with other radio channels because of lesser variety and indistinct music.

Hi,

There is no Jaimala of Rafi, Kishore, Sahir. Kaifi Azmi's Jaimala was
broadcast last month only. But u r right that VB keeps on repeating
the same progs again and again. may be some of the recordings are
damaged or not in a state to be aired.

Hello friends.
Thanks to my lethargy, Kamal Amrohi Sahab (and Vividh Bharati) have
beaten me. You must have heard his Jaimala Gold at 3.15 today. I kept
prevaricating and postponing posting the file, and Vividh Bharati
broadcast Kamal Sahab's programme a fourth time. I feel ashamed.
Anyhow, the file is ready. Shall post it tomorrow. If any other member

By the way, does Vividh Bharati have a limited stock of old Jaimalas?
Why did it have to air Kamal Amrohi's programme a fourth time? Aren't
there Jaimalas of Mohd Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Balraj Sahni, Kaifi Azmi or
Sahir Ludhianvi. I'd give my right arm for Sahir and Rafi's Jaimalas.
Please record them if these are broadcast. I'll try to record them on
my part. Unfortunately, I couldn't record Kamal Amrohi's programme
broadcast today; I heard it on my car radio.
Susan, thanks for your suggestions. Hopefully, I will be able to send
you all the file one way or other.

EPISODE 3 (29/01/2006)

This episode entirely deals with ARADHANA.

Before Aradhana, Rajesh Khanna had worked in 2/3 films all of which
had flopped. When the concept of Aradhana came in Samanta's mind, he
wanted to cast new actors as he wanted the audience not to compare
the performances of the actors with their earlier films. Samanta
liked the performances of Rajesh Khanna in his previus films and
called him. But Khanna was disappointed on hearing the story as his
character dies before the interval and comes again at the end. But
Samanta tried to convince him by all means. He even assured him of
financial security that he would get his money even if the film
flopped. With new faces, Samanta made this film in a low budget, but
when it released, it made him a 'lakhpati'.

Song: Mere sapnon ki rani kab aayegi tu (Aradhana)

Aradhana was released in Bandra Talkies. In Madras, it ran for 2
years at a stretch. Even the style of Sharmila Tagore was adopted by
the girls and many started wearing their sarees in her style.
Aradhana also gave birth to a superstar (Rajesh Khanna). It also
flagged off the association of Rajesh Khanna, Anand Bakshi, S D
Burman and Kishore Kumar. One song of this film was composed by R D
Burman as his father's health was not going well.

Song: Baagon mein bahaar hai (Aradhana)

At first it was decided that Rafi would sing the songs. But he was on
a long world tour, hence it was decided to get Kishore. But at that
time, Kishore used to sing for Dev Anand, so S D Burman was not sure
if Kishore would sing for the new hero. Shakti called up Kishore, who
had become his friend by that time through Ashok Kumar. Kishore said
that he sings for Dev Anand. Samanta replied, "nakhre kyun kar raha
hai, ho saktaa hai ki yeh tumhaare liye kuchh achchha ho jaaye!"
ishore agreed and in this way the first song was recorded.

Song: Kora kaagaz tha yeh man mera (Aradhana)

When Rafi returned back, he was given the remaining two songs.

Song: Gungunaa rahe hain bhanwren (Aradhana)

"Roop tera mastaana pyar mera deewana" was a very bold song for that
period. Shakti usually listened to the his songs at night in his
house and thought about their picturizations. For this song, it
suddenly came to his mind to picturize this song in one shot. He took
a piece of paper and wrote 'A', 'B' and 'C' on it, A for hero, B for
heroine and C for camera and picturized the song i his mind. He
arranged for a round trolley and shot it in the Filmalaya studio.
Many people put an objection to his idea of shootng it in one shot.
Someone said, "iska dimaag kharaab ho gaya hai jo itna achchha gaana
ek hi 'shot' mein le raha hai". Samanta jusitified by saying
that "jab raat ko gaana sun raha tha to samajh hi naheen aaya ki
kahaan 'cut' karoon". This song became the first song in Hindi cinema
to be picturized in a single shot.

Qamar Jalalabadi ke zindegi ki shuruwaat huyi 28 February 1917 ko
Punjab ke Jalalabad shaher mein. Unka asli naam tha Om Prakash
Bhandari. Bachpan se ki kalaa aur lekhan ke prati unka rujhaan tha.
apne 'professional career' ki shuruwaat unhone patrakaarita se
kiya. 'Daily Milaap' naamak patrika mein unhone apna ek Khaasa jagah
banaaya. ptrakaarita ke saath saath woh apna ek aur pehchaan bhi
banaa rahe the, shaayar ka.

Shaayri aur sangeet ke sangam ne unhe ek naghma-nigaar banaa diya.

Qamar Jalalabadi ne apne samay ke sabhi naami sangeetkaaron ke liye
geet likhe, in mein se kuchh ke naam hain Husnlal Bhagatram. Raag
PahaaDi par aadhaarit film Ansoo ki yeh rachnaa film sangeet ke
itihaas mein ek sarvashreshTha geet ke roop mein maana aur jaana
jaata hai.

Qamar Jalalabadi ne apne filmi safar mein kuchh 166 filmon mein
kareeb kareeb 700 gaane likhe. ek kaamyaab geetkaar aur shaayar hote
huye bhi unhone 41 filmon ka samvaad lekhan kiya. iske alaawa
4 'screenplay' aur 5 kahaaniyaan bhi likhe. is tarah se unki kalaa
aur pratibha film nirmaan ke anek kshtron mein nazar aayeen. Film
Writers' Association ki sthaapna mein Qamar saahab ka mahatwapoorna
yogdaan raha. woh uske 'Founder Secretary' aur 'President' bhi rahe.
9 January 2003 ko Qamar saahab ne is faani duniya ko alvidaa keh
diyaa aur amar ho gaye apne kaaljayee kritiyon ke zariye. Qamar
saahab apne geeton ke baare mein kahaa karte the ki "yeh naghmein
qaum ke hain jo chaahe gungunaa le"
