Process time is higher when your sorting varible is in character format.   Regards, Arumugam Ramasamy, Biostatistician, Trivandrum. From: Sandipan

Subject: [Statisticians_group] Sorting in SAS by Numeric or Character Variables

      Hi,

I have a simple basic query. It is fact that if we convert a numeric variable to character variable it will save memory. Now let a SAS data set is look like below:

      X1 X2 X3
      01 AB 1
      03 AC 31
      02 SS 4
      10 ww 15

It is clear that X1 and X2 are character variables where X3 is numeric.

Now my question is if I want to sort the data by X1 as a character variable and after converting it numeric variable which one take more times?

      Regards,
      Sandipan
